Solomon’s Story: Online Searching

Baseball is one of my favorite sports, and I love cheering for the San Francisco Giants. On weekends, I enjoy playing baseball with my friends. My favorite spot on the field is third base, but recently, I’ve been curious about pitching. My dad suggested I look up some information online about pitchers, so I decided to find out which pitcher has the record for the most no-hitters. A no-hitter is when a pitcher doesn’t let the other team get any hits during the whole game.

Starting My Search

When I typed the word “pitcher” into the search bar, I got a lot of results. The first few links were ads for glass pitchers—there are so many stores selling them! But that wasn’t what I wanted. I clicked on another link that had lots of information, but it didn’t mention no-hitters. So, I tried a new search using the words “pitcher record no-hitters.”

Finding the Right Information

I found a few fan sites. One person thought a no-hitter was when you don’t feel like playing baseball, so you don’t hit. Another kid said he held the record for the most no-hitters, but he was just in Little League. Then, I found a Wikipedia page and clicked on it. It said that Nolan Ryan holds the record for the most no-hitters. I wanted to be sure this was true, so I went back to the search page and found links to Major League Baseball and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I clicked on both because they seemed like trustworthy sources.

Learning from My Search

It turns out Nolan Ryan does have the record for the most no-hitters! I learned that there’s a lot of amazing information online—some of it is helpful, and some isn’t. Now I know that the best way to search online is to use the right words and visit sites that I can trust. Otherwise, I might end up reading about glass pitchers instead of baseball!

Tips for Online Searching

Here are some tips I learned for searching online:

  • Use specific words related to what you’re looking for.
  • Check multiple sources to make sure the information is correct.
  • Look for reliable websites, like official sports organizations or well-known encyclopedias.

By following these tips, you can find the information you need and learn a lot of cool things along the way!

  • Have you ever searched for something online? What did you look for, and how did you find the information you needed?
  • Why do you think it’s important to use the right words when searching for information online? Can you think of a time when you found something unexpected because of the words you used?
  • What are some ways you can tell if a website is trustworthy? Have you ever found information online that you weren’t sure about?
  1. Search Word Challenge: Think of something you’re curious about, like a favorite animal or a place you’d like to visit. Write down a list of words you might use to search for information about it online. Try using different combinations of these words in a search engine and see what results you get. Discuss with a friend or family member which words helped you find the best information and why.

  2. Trustworthy Source Hunt: With the help of an adult, pick a topic and search for it online. Find three different websites that provide information about your topic. Together, decide which site you think is the most trustworthy and why. Consider factors like the author, the website’s purpose, and whether the information is up-to-date.

  3. Real-Life No-Hitter: If you have a baseball or a soft ball, go outside and try to pitch a “no-hitter” with a friend or family member. Count how many times you can throw the ball without letting the other person hit it. Afterward, talk about how practicing pitching in real life is similar to searching for information online—both require trying different techniques to get the best results!

Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Baseball is one of my favorite sports, and my favorite team is the San Francisco Giants. I also enjoy playing with my friends on the weekends. My favorite position is playing third base, but lately, I’ve been more interested in pitching. My dad recommended that I do some research online about pitchers, so I wanted to find out which pitcher holds the record for the most no-hitters. A no-hitter is when a pitcher allows no hits during an entire baseball game.

I typed in the word “pitcher,” and I got a ton of results. The first few links were ads for glass pitchers—there sure are a lot of stores that sell them! But that wasn’t what I was looking for. I clicked on another link that had lots of information, but I didn’t find anything on no-hitters, so I decided to try a different search. I typed in the main words “pitcher record no-hitters.”

I saw a couple of fan sites. One guy said a no-hitter was when you don’t feel like playing baseball, so you decide not to hit. Another boy claimed he had the record for the most no-hitters, but it turned out he was in Little League. I also found a Wikipedia page and clicked on it. It said that Nolan Ryan holds the record for the most no-hitters. I wanted to make sure it was correct, though, so I went back to the search page and saw links to Major League Baseball and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I clicked on both of those because they seemed like reliable sources.

It turns out Nolan Ryan does have the record, but I’m beginning to realize that there’s a lot of amazing information online—some of it is good, and some is not so helpful. Now I know that the best way to search online is to use the right words and to visit sites that I can trust; otherwise, I might end up reading about glass pitchers instead of baseball.
