Sort the Same Group Two Different Ways | Preschool and Kindergarten

share us on:

In today’s lesson, we explored the concept of sorting by grouping items based on shared characteristics. We practiced sorting toy cars first by color, identifying red cars regardless of their size, and then by size, focusing on small and big cars. Finally, we applied our sorting skills to birds, reinforcing that items can be categorized in multiple ways, making sorting a fun and versatile activity!
  1. What are two ways we can sort toy cars?
  2. Can you name a color of a car we sorted today?
  3. Why is it important to sort things in different ways?

Welcome to Fun Sorting!

Hey there! Today, we’re going to have some fun with sorting. Sorting means putting things into groups that are the same in some way. Let’s learn how to sort things in two different ways!

Sorting Cars by Color

Imagine we have a bunch of toy cars. How can we sort them? One way is by color. Let’s find all the red cars first!

Look, here’s a big red car! Let’s put it in the red car group. Oh, here’s another red car, and it’s big too. But remember, we only care about the color right now, not the size. So, let’s add it to the red group.

Now, here’s a small red car. Does it belong in the red group? Yes, it does! Even though it’s small, it’s still red, so it goes with the other red cars.

We found three red cars: two big ones and one small one. Great job!

Sorting Cars by Size

Now, let’s sort the same cars again, but this time by size. We have big cars and small cars. Let’s find all the small cars!

Here’s a small red car. Let’s put it in the small car group. Remember, the color doesn’t matter now, just the size.

Here’s another small car, but it’s blue. That’s okay! It still goes in the small car group because it’s small.

We found two small cars. Yay!

Sorting Challenge

Now, let’s try sorting something else. Imagine we have some birds. Can you sort them in two different ways?

Here’s the answer! We can sort the birds by color. There are three yellow birds. We can also sort them by size. There are three big birds and two small birds.

Isn’t sorting fun? You can always try to sort things in more than one way. Keep practicing, and you’ll get even better at it!

Thanks for Learning with Us!

Great job today! Thanks for joining us. Keep exploring and sorting, and we’ll see you next time!

  • Can you think of other things at home that you can sort by color or size? What are they, and how would you sort them?
  • Why do you think sorting is important? How does it help us in our everyday lives?
  • Have you ever sorted something in a way that was different from others? How did you do it, and why did you choose that way?
  1. Color Hunt at Home: Go on a color hunt around your house! Find different objects that are the same color and group them together. For example, find all the blue items in your room. How many did you find? Can you find more than one color and make different groups?

  2. Size Sorting with Snacks: Ask a grown-up to help you gather some snacks like crackers, fruits, or candies. Sort them by size! Make a group of big snacks and a group of small snacks. Which group has more? Can you sort them by color too?

  3. Sorting Nature Walk: Take a walk outside and collect leaves, rocks, or flowers. Once you have a few, try sorting them by color or size. How many different ways can you sort your collection? Share your sorted groups with a friend or family member!

Welcome to Kids Academy!

Sometimes, when you look at a group of objects that you are sorting, you might think there’s another way to sort them. That’s what we’re going to do today! We’ll sort the same group of objects in two different ways.

Let’s check it out with an example. We’ll look at some cars. What is one way we can sort these objects? They are all cars, so we can’t sort them by what kind of object they are, but we can sort them by color and size.

First, let’s sort by color. Let’s find all of the red cars. Here’s one—a big red car. Right now, we only care that it’s red; the size doesn’t matter because we are sorting by color. Let’s put it in the group of red cars.

Here’s another red car; it’s also big. But remember, we’re only sorting by color, so we can have small red cars too. Let’s add this one to the group of red cars and see if there are any others left.

This car is big and blue, so we can’t put it in the red group because it’s not red. We’ll wait to sort it by size later.

Now, let’s look at the rest of the cars. Here’s a small red car. Does this go in the group of red cars? Yes, it does! Even though it’s small, it fits in the group because it is red.

Let’s see if there are any more red cars left. Do you see any? Neither do I. We found three red cars—two big and one small.

Now, let’s look at the same group of cars again. Can we sort them another way? Yes, we can sort the cars by size. There are big cars and small cars. When we sort this group, we won’t care about the color, only the size.

Let’s find all of the small cars. I see a big red car, so that doesn’t fit in my group. I see another big red car, and that doesn’t fit either because it’s big. We want small cars.

Aha! Here’s a small red car. We can put this car in the group of small cars. The color doesn’t matter as long as it’s small.

Let’s check the last car to see if it’s small too. This is a small blue car. Remember, the color doesn’t matter as long as it’s small.

There were two small cars in this group. We sorted the cars first by color, finding all the red cars, and then by size, finding all the small cars. Some cars belong to both groups, and that’s okay!

Now, here’s a challenge for you: can you sort this group in two different ways? Take some time to think, and if you need more time, you can pause the video.

Okay, here’s the answer! We can sort these birds by color—there were three yellow birds. We can also sort them by size—there were three big birds and two small birds.

Remember, when you are sorting objects, look to see if you can sort them in more than one way. Great job today! Thanks for watching! See you next time! Subscribe to our channel to stay updated on new videos, and find links to our apps in the comments below.
