Hi there, friends! Today, we’re going to have fun learning how to sort things by their color and size. Sorting helps us in many ways, like when we’re picking fruits and vegetables!
Meet Eddie! Eddie is wearing a cool hat, just like a farmer. He wants to pick some berries for dessert. But how does he know which berries are ready to eat?
Think about berries that you see in desserts. They are usually bright red and smell really yummy. Eddie decides to pick only the red berries because they are ripe and ready to eat!
He looks at the berries and says, “I’ll pick this one… and not this one because it’s green. Oh, here’s a ripe strawberry!” Eddie picks all the red berries and leaves the green ones behind.
Great job, Eddie! You sorted the berries by color. Now you have a basket full of delicious red berries for dessert!
Next, Eddie needs to pick some squashes for a stew. There are so many squashes, but how does he know which ones to pick?
Unlike berries, squashes don’t change color when they are ripe. Instead, the ripe ones are bigger in size. So, Eddie decides to pick the big squashes, no matter what color they are.
He finds a beautiful yellow squash, but it’s too small, so he leaves it to grow bigger. Then he picks a big green squash and another big one too!
Awesome, Eddie! You sorted the squashes by size. Now you have all the ripe squashes for your stew!
Eddie has collected all the ripe strawberries and squashes. He can make a yummy dinner because he knows how to sort by color and size. Sorting helps us choose the best things for what we need!
Next time, we’ll learn even more ways to sort things. Sorting is like a fun game that helps us every day!
Thanks for learning with us! We hope you had fun. Don’t forget to come back for more exciting lessons. See you soon!
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around your home or classroom! Find objects that are red, just like the ripe berries Eddie picked. Can you find something red in your room? How about in the kitchen? Once you’ve found a few red items, try sorting them by size. Which one is the biggest? Which one is the smallest?
Size Sorting with Toys: Gather some of your toys and sort them by size. Start by making a group of small toys and a group of big toys. Can you find a toy that is medium-sized? Talk about why sorting by size might be helpful, just like when Eddie picked the squashes.
Berry Picking Role Play: Pretend to be Eddie and use play food or pictures of fruits and vegetables. Practice sorting them by color and size. Which ones would you pick for a dessert? Which ones would you pick for a stew? Share your choices with a friend or family member and explain why you picked them.

Hi everyone! Today we’ll learn how to sort objects by color and size, and see how it can be helpful in our everyday life.
Hi, Eddie!
Hello, everyone! What a cool hat you’ve got, like a real farmer!
Thank you! I need to pick some berries for dessert and vegetables for a stew. There are different berries here. How do I know which ones are ripe?
Think of berries that are usually served for dessert. They are bright red and smell delicious.
Right! I’ll only pick the red berries that smell yummy. Let me see… I’ll pick this one… and nope, this one is green. Wow, here’s a ripe strawberry! And this… no, it should stay on the bed. I’ll pick this one and this one and this one too.
Now there are only green strawberries left on the bed, and all the red ones are in my basket.
Great job, Eddie! We can say you have sorted these berries by color. They’ll make a great dessert!
Now I need to pick some nice squashes.
Wow, there are so many different squashes here!
They’re all ripe except for the green ones, right?
No, squashes don’t change their color, but the riper ones are bigger in size.
Got it! Then I’ll collect the big squashes of any color. This yellow squash is so beautiful, but it’s too small. Let it stay on the bed to get ripe. And this one is big, and even though it’s green, I’ll pick it for my vegetables too.
This squash is big too, and I’ll take this one.
Awesome, Eddie! We can also say that you have just sorted the squashes by size.
I’ve collected all the ripe strawberries and squashes! We’ll make a great dinner from them, and we could do it because we know how to sort objects by color and size.
Next time, we’ll talk about sorting the same group of objects in different ways.
See you soon!
