In today’s lesson, young learners explored the concept of sorting by categorizing items based on similarities and differences. They practiced sorting elephants by color and food into healthy and unhealthy groups, reinforcing their understanding of classification. The lesson emphasized that sorting is not only fun but also a valuable skill for learning about the world.
  1. What colors did we use to sort the elephants?
  2. Can you name one healthy food and one unhealthy food?
  3. Why is sorting important for us to learn?

Welcome to Our Fun Learning Time!

Hello, little learners! Today, we’re going to have some fun with sorting. Sorting means putting things that are the same in one group and things that are different in another group. Are you ready to play this sorting game with me?

Sorting Elephants by Color

Let’s start with some elephants. Elephants are big and amazing animals! We have two groups for our elephants. One group is for blue elephants, and the other group is for red elephants. Let’s see where each elephant belongs.

Here’s our first elephant. It’s red, so it goes in the red group. The next one is also red, so it joins the red group too. Oh, look! The next elephant is blue, so it goes in the blue group. Another blue elephant joins the blue group. Here’s a red elephant, so it goes in the red group. And the last one is blue, so it goes in the blue group.

Yay! We sorted all the elephants by their colors. Great job!

Sorting Food: Healthy and Unhealthy

Now, let’s sort some yummy food! We have two groups again. One group is for healthy food, and the other group is for unhealthy food. Healthy food is good for our bodies, and unhealthy food is tasty but not so good for us.

Let’s start sorting! Here’s an apple. Apples are healthy, so it goes in the healthy food group. Next, we have a piece of cake. Cake is sweet and yummy, but it’s unhealthy, so it goes in the unhealthy food group.

Challenge Time!

Now it’s your turn! Can you sort the rest of the food? Remember to think about whether the food is healthy or unhealthy.

Here’s the answer: The banana and the water belong in the healthy food group. The candy and the soda belong in the unhealthy food group. Well done!

Keep Sorting and Learning!

Remember, sorting is fun and helps us learn about the world around us. Keep practicing, and you’ll become a sorting superstar!

Thanks for learning with us today. See you next time for more fun and learning!

  • Can you think of other things you can sort at home, like toys or clothes? How would you sort them and why?
  • Why do you think it’s important to know which foods are healthy and which are not? Can you name a healthy food you like to eat?
  • Have you ever seen animals or objects in different colors like the elephants in the story? What colors were they, and how did you feel when you saw them?
  1. Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around your home or classroom. Find objects that are red and blue, just like the elephants in the story. Once you have your objects, sort them into two groups: one for red items and one for blue items. Can you find more red or blue objects? Talk about what you found with a friend or family member.

  2. Healthy Snack Sorting: With the help of a grown-up, gather some snacks from the kitchen. Sort them into two groups: healthy snacks and unhealthy snacks. Discuss why each snack is healthy or unhealthy. After sorting, choose a healthy snack to enjoy together!

  3. Sorting Nature Walk: Take a walk outside and collect small items like leaves, rocks, or flowers. When you return, sort them by size, color, or type. For example, you can make a group of big leaves and a group of small leaves. Share your sorted collections with your classmates or family and explain how you decided to sort them.

Welcome to Kids Academy!

When we look at a group of objects, we can sort them into two groups. The first thing we should do before we start sorting is to look at the objects and the names of the groups. Hopefully, once we take a first look at the objects and the names of the groups, we will know how to sort them.

In this case, we are sorting some elephants. They are my favorite animals! If we look at the names of the groups, we can see that we are sorting by color. We will put the blue elephants on one side and the red elephants on the other side.

Let’s take a look at our elephants and start sorting them into these two groups. The first elephant belongs in the red group; it’s a red elephant. The next elephant also belongs in the red group; it’s another red elephant. But check it out, the next elephant is blue! This elephant belongs in the blue group because it’s a blue elephant. The next elephant also belongs in the blue group; it’s a blue elephant too. This elephant is red and belongs in the red group; it’s a red elephant. The last elephant belongs in the blue group; it’s a blue elephant.

Now we’ve sorted all the elephants into two groups!

Let’s try to sort one more group of objects. We’ll get started together, but I’ll ask you to finish sorting these objects on your own during challenge time. This time, the groups will be different, so we’ll have to pay close attention to detail.

Let’s take a look at our new objects and the groups we’ll be sorting them into. It looks like we have some food! The names of the groups are healthy food and unhealthy food. We’ll take a look at the objects one by one and then decide if it’s a healthy piece of food or an unhealthy piece of food.

Let’s get started! This is an apple. I know that apples are healthy and good for you, so let’s put it in the healthy food group. Now we have a piece of cake. It sure looks yummy, but even though it’s tasty, it’s definitely unhealthy. Let’s put it in the unhealthy food group.

I bet you can finish sorting these foods into the two groups on your own, so I’ll leave you with a challenge. I want you to finish sorting the foods into two groups. I’ll give you some time to think, but if you need more time, you can pause the video and answer when you’re ready.

Okay, here’s the answer! The banana and the water belong in the healthy food group, and the candy and the soda belong in the unhealthy food group. Remember to look at all the objects and the names of the groups carefully before you start sorting.
