Starting School: Flamingo’s First Day Adventure

Hi everyone! My name is Denise, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to story time. Today, we’re diving into a delightful tale from the Khan Academy Kids app called Starting School, written by Cynthia Platt. This story follows Flamingo as he embarks on his first day of school, filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. Let’s explore how his day unfolds!

The First Day Jitters

As the first day of school dawned, Flamingo was a bundle of emotions. He was both eager and anxious, mainly because he didn’t know any of the other birds and had no clue what to expect. Upon arriving, Flamingo was greeted by his teacher, surrounded by a sea of unfamiliar birds. It was a bit overwhelming for him.

Discovering Talents

Throughout the day, Flamingo noticed how talented his new classmates were. During the morning meeting, Nightingale sang each note beautifully, while Flamingo struggled to keep up. In art class, Bowerbird crafted an impressive sculpture, something Flamingo couldn’t quite manage. Science class saw Crow completing the experiment flawlessly, leaving Flamingo feeling a bit out of place. It seemed like the day wasn’t going as well as he had hoped.

A Surprising Turn in PE

Finally, it was time for the last class of the day—PE. Flamingo feared it might be the toughest class yet. However, when the teacher started playing music, the atmosphere changed. They were going to dance! Flamingo was eager to join in but felt shy since no one else had started dancing. Gathering his courage, he began to move his head to the rhythm, and soon enough, he was showing off his best dance moves.

Embracing Uniqueness

To Flamingo’s surprise, the other birds were impressed and began asking him to teach them his moves. Despite feeling that everyone else was good at everything, Flamingo realized that it was okay not to excel at everything. His new friends were supportive, and he learned that asking for help was perfectly fine.

Looking Forward to New Adventures

By the time Flamingo flew home, his worries about school had eased. On the second day, he felt more prepared, ready to enjoy learning and having fun with his new friends.

  • How do you think Flamingo felt when he first arrived at school and saw all the other birds? Have you ever felt that way on your first day of something new?
  • Flamingo discovered he was good at dancing. What is something you enjoy doing or feel you are good at? How did you find out you liked it?
  • Flamingo learned that it’s okay to ask for help. Can you think of a time when you asked someone for help? How did it make you feel?
  • Talent Show and Tell: Ask the children to think about something they are good at or enjoy doing, just like Flamingo discovered his talent for dancing. Have them bring an item or perform a short demonstration of their talent in class. This could be drawing, singing, telling a joke, or even showing a favorite toy. Encourage them to share why they like it and how it makes them feel special.
  • Feelings Chart: Create a simple chart with different emotions like happy, nervous, excited, and shy. Throughout the week, ask the children to place a sticker or draw a smiley face next to the emotion they felt during different activities at school. Discuss how it’s normal to feel different emotions and how Flamingo felt on his first day. This helps them understand and express their feelings better.
  • Dance Party Exploration: Just like Flamingo found joy in dancing, organize a mini dance party where children can explore different types of music and dance styles. Encourage them to create their own dance moves and teach them to their classmates. This activity promotes creativity and helps children appreciate their unique abilities and those of others.
