In this lesson, children learn about story elements, focusing specifically on characters, which are the people, animals, or creatures that can think, feel, and act within a story. Through examples and interactive questions, students distinguish between what qualifies as a character and what does not, reinforcing their understanding of this essential story element. The lesson encourages kids to think about the characters they encounter in their own reading experiences and invites them to continue exploring the world of stories.
  1. What is a character in a story?
  2. Can you name a character you like from a book or a movie?
  3. How can you tell if something is a character or not?

Story Elements for Kids: What Is a Character?

What Are Story Elements?

When we read a story, it has different parts that make it interesting. These parts are called story elements. One of the most important parts is called a character. Let’s find out what a character is!

What Is a Character?

Characters are the people, animals, or creatures in a story. They can think, feel, and do things. For example, a police officer can be a character. A dog might be a character. Even a robot can be a character!

How Do We Know If Something Is a Character?

Let’s think about a story with a boy and his teddy bear. The boy is a character because he is a person. If the teddy bear can think, feel, move, or talk, then it is also a character. But if it’s just a regular toy, then it’s not a character.

Let’s Play “Character or Not?”

Let’s see if you can tell what is a character and what is not!

A Nurse

Character or not? Yes! A nurse is a person, and people are characters.

A House

Character or not? No, a house is not a person, animal, or creature. So it’s not a character.

A Cat

Character or not? Yes, a cat is an animal, and animals are characters!

A Banana

Character or not? No, a banana is not a character unless it can think, feel, or act in the story.

A Dragon

Character or not? Yes, a dragon is a creature, and creatures are characters!

What Characters Have You Seen?

Think about the stories you have read. What characters have you seen? Maybe a brave knight, a clever fox, or a friendly ghost!

Keep Learning!

If you enjoyed learning about characters, there are more fun videos and lessons you can watch. Keep exploring and have fun with stories!

  • Can you think of a story you know where an animal is a character? What does the animal do in the story?
  • Imagine your favorite toy could come to life in a story. What kind of character would it be, and what adventures might it have?
  • Have you ever read a story with a character that is not a person or an animal, like a robot or a talking tree? How did that character make the story interesting?
  1. Create Your Own Character: Draw a picture of a character you would like to see in a story. It can be a person, an animal, or even a magical creature. Give your character a name and think about what they like to do. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and tell them a little story about your character. What adventures might they have?

  2. Character Hunt: Go on a character hunt in your favorite storybook. Look at the pictures and read the story to find all the characters. Make a list of them. Are they people, animals, or creatures? Try to describe each character in one or two words, like “brave” or “funny.” Discuss with a friend or family member why you think each one is a character.

  3. Character Role-Play: Choose a character from a story you like and pretend to be that character for a day. Think about how they would act, what they would say, and how they would feel. You can even dress up like them if you want! Share your experience with your class or family. Did pretending to be the character help you understand them better?
