Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to have a fun time with a story about a big truck called a “big rig.” Are you ready? Let’s go!
Our story is about a big truck named Frankie. Frankie is a special kind of truck called a semi-truck, and he has 18 big wheels! Can you count to 18 with me? 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18! Wow, that’s a lot of wheels!
Frankie has a big job to do. He carries lots of things called “cargo.” Cargo can be anything you can think of! Maybe toys, food, or even clothes. What do you think Frankie is carrying today?
Frankie has a loud horn. Do you want to pretend to pull the horn? Go ahead, give it a try! Frankie also has special brakes that make a funny sound when he stops. Let’s pretend to stop with Frankie. Ready? Stop!
Even if it rains, Frankie is ready to go. He has windshield wipers to keep his windows clear. And at night, he turns on his lights so everyone can see him. He looks like a Christmas tree with all those lights!
Oh no! Frankie has a flat tire. But don’t worry, a service truck will come to help fix it. Once Frankie is all patched up, he’s ready to roll again. Hooray!
Frankie and his friends make it to the end of their trip. They did a great job working together. Now, Frankie can rest until the next adventure.
Here are some fun words we learned today:
Thank you for joining us for this fun story about Frankie the Big Rig. We hope you enjoyed it and learned something new. See you next time for another exciting story!
Counting Wheels and Cargo: Let’s practice counting just like we did with Frankie’s wheels! Gather some toy cars or trucks at home. Count how many wheels each one has. Can you find one with 18 wheels like Frankie? Now, think about what kind of cargo your toy vehicles might carry. Draw a picture of your favorite toy vehicle and its cargo. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and explain what your vehicle is carrying!
Sound Adventure: Frankie has a loud horn and special brakes that make funny sounds. Let’s explore sounds around us! Go on a sound adventure in your home or outside. Listen for different vehicle sounds like horns, engines, or brakes. Can you mimic these sounds? Try creating your own vehicle sound using your voice or by tapping on different objects. Share your favorite sound with the class!
Weather Watch: Frankie is ready to go in any weather. Look outside and observe the weather today. Is it sunny, rainy, or cloudy? Draw a picture of Frankie driving in today’s weather. What would he need to be ready? Maybe an umbrella for rain or sunglasses for sun! Discuss with a friend how different weather might affect Frankie’s journey.

Hey, I’m Ryan Leod, and I’m Craig Tovy. Welcome to Story Time with Ryan Leod and Craig Tovy! Today’s book is *Big Rig* by Jamie A. Swensson, pictures by Ned Young.
Look, Ryan, it’s like cars!
Oh no, it’s a big rig!
Yeah, but look at the picture. You’ve seen the movie *Cars*, right? It’s just like cars!
Oh, but it’s not because it’s a big rig.
Sure, let’s get started!
*Big Rig* by Jamie A. Swensson, pictures by Ned Young.
Hello there! My name’s Frankie. Proud to meet you!
What are you doing?
Is that a great voice?
No, it’s terrible! We can’t do that voice for a big rig.
What about this one?
Hello there! My name’s Frankie.
How about this?
Hello, my name is Frankie.
Hi, I’m Frankie!
My name is Frankie.
I do declare, my name is Frankie!
Yo, my name is Frankie! What’s up?
How about this?
Hello there! My name’s Frankie. Proud to meet you!
There it is! I’m a big rig, a semi-truck. I’ve got 18 ready-to-roll tires just waiting to hit the pavement. Count them and weep: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18!
I’ve got a big job to do. Climb in; you can come too!
Can we go, Craig? Craig, can we go?
I don’t…
What do you mean, can we go? Just say yes!
Say yes, you can go!
Yes, yes, yes!
We’ve got cargo ready to roll!
What’s cargo?
Well, that’s what we’re carrying. It could be anything! You name it, we haul it.
Do I have a horn?
What do you think? Go ahead, pull down!
Go ahead, Ryan, pull down on what? Just try it!
[Music]
Ryan, you’re going to break it!
Okay, it’s not a toy. Want to hear that again? Thought so!
I have high-powered air compression brakes. When I slow down, believe me, you’ll know!
Go ahead, hit the Jake brake!
Well done!
But it’s time for the real fun! Let’s roll!
Rain clouds? Not a problem! Wipers, do your job! Lights on! Can’t miss me; I’m a Christmas tree!
Looks like blue skies on the horizon.
That water park looks cool! I wish it was real. Can we go to the water park?
It’s not a real thing.
Can we go to it?
I don’t know. Just say yes, please!
Just say yes!
Yes, yes, yes!
Full throttle, folks! Wave hello right back at you!
We passed kitty cars, beetles, land yachts. Do you think they want to hear our horn?
I’m getting tired; we’d better put some miles behind us.
Bang!
[Music]
What was that? What happened?
Oh no, a blowout!
Oh yeah, it looked like a blowout!
Yeah, that’s what I thought too when I saw it. I was like, “That looks like a blowout!” but I wasn’t sure.
Back off the hammer! Hit the brake! Use the J!
Alligators everywhere! Look right! Hold tight! Swerve left!
Whoo! Pull over!
Now what?
Why, that’s easy! Now we wait for the service truck!
Who saves the day?
We’re all patched up and on our way! No time to lose; let’s roll!
We made it! The magic mile! Way to go! We’re a hardworking team, you and me!
Can we go to Dinosaur Land?
I don’t know where it is.
Please!
It’s not a real place!
Just say yes!
Yes, yes, yes!
Catch you on the flip-flop! Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down!
Well, that was great!
Not so fast, Ryan! There’s another page!
It’s the glossary; it defines all the words we’ve been using in the book today.
Well, I wish I had that before!
Oh well!

– Alligator: tread from an 18-wheeler in the road.
– Back off the hammer: slow down / hit the brakes.
