Exciting Bookstore Adventure

George is super excited because his favorite author is going to be there. She writes books about a penguin named Penny, and George loves every single one of them. He can’t wait to meet her!

When they get to the bookstore, there’s a long line of people waiting to see the author. George climbs onto his friend’s shoulders to try and see her, but there are too many people in the way.

Discovering New Things

George looks around the bookstore and sees so many new books. He wonders what stories they might tell and what funny characters he might meet. His friend tells him not to wander off too far because he doesn’t want to miss anything.

While flipping through a storybook, George smells something yummy. It’s banana bread! But wait, food isn’t usually allowed in bookstores. George is curious and decides to find out more.

A Yummy Surprise

George finds a small café inside the bookstore with a sign that says “Free Samples.” He sees people enjoying little squares of banana bread, so he tries one too. A little girl notices George and tells her dad, “Look! That monkey likes banana bread!”

Thanks for Joining Story Time!

Thank you for joining us for story time with Riley and Craig. We hope you enjoyed the adventure with Curious George. See you next time for more fun stories!

  • What do you think makes George so curious, and why is it fun to explore new places like he does?
  • Have you ever been to a bookstore or library? What was your favorite part about it, and did you find any interesting books or stories?
  • If you could meet your favorite author or character from a book, who would it be and what would you like to ask them?
  1. Bookstore Adventure Hunt: Create a mini-bookstore in your classroom or home with different books and objects. Hide a small toy monkey (representing Curious George) somewhere in the “bookstore.” Encourage the children to explore and find the monkey, just like George explored the bookstore. Ask them to describe what they see and what they think George might be curious about in each section of the bookstore.

  2. Banana Bread Baking: Organize a simple banana bread baking activity. Discuss with the children how George found banana bread in the bookstore café. Let them help with mixing ingredients and observe the changes as the bread bakes. Ask them questions like, “What do you think makes the bread rise?” or “Why do you think George liked the banana bread?” This activity connects the story to a real-life experience and encourages curiosity about cooking.

  3. Build Your Own Book Tower: Provide children with a variety of books and encourage them to build their own book towers, just like George did. Discuss balance and stability as they stack the books. Ask them, “How high can you build your tower before it falls?” and “What happens if you use bigger or smaller books?” This activity promotes hands-on learning and problem-solving skills.

[Music] Hi, I’m Riley, and I’m Craig. Welcome to Story Time with Ryan McGann and Craig Toby. Today, we will be reading “Curious George Goes to a Bookstore” by Margaret and H.A. Rey. Let’s get started!

George was a good little monkey and always very curious. Today, George and his friend, the man with the yellow hat, were going to the grand opening of a bookstore in their neighborhood. George’s favorite author was going to be signing her latest Penny the Penguin picture book. He had every Penny book she ever wrote and couldn’t wait to meet her.

When they arrived at the bookstore, they found a long line zigzagging between the bookshelves. “We’ll purchase books first,” said his friend. “There are a lot of kids who also love Penny the Penguin.” George climbed onto his friend’s shoulders to try to peek at the author, but he was too small to see her through the crowd.

He looked around the bookstore, amazed by all the new books. What stories would they hold inside? What funny characters would he meet? “George, don’t wander off too far,” said the man with the yellow hat, letting George down and picking up a bird-watching guide from a nearby shelf. “You wouldn’t want to miss anything in your book.”

George was happily flipping through a storybook when he noticed the wonderful smell of banana bread. It made his stomach rumble. George was curious—could there be food in the bookstore? Food and drink were never allowed in the library. George decided to find out.

As soon as he turned the corner, he discovered a glass shelf filled with baked goods. Instead of books, it was a small café. Next to the cabinet was a table with a sign that said “Free Samples.” George watched people help themselves to little squares of banana bread. He took one too.

A little girl saw George and tugged on her father’s sleeve. “Daddy, look! That monkey likes banana bread!” she exclaimed. “Yes, I suppose monkeys would enjoy banana bread,” her father replied, still looking at his book.

While George was reaching for another sample, he saw the little girl and her father leave the café. Tucked under the girl’s arm was George’s favorite dinosaur book. He decided to follow them. They led him past a display of dinosaur books in the science area of the store. The display was as tall as the man with the yellow hat, and it was hard to resist for a little monkey who loved to climb.

George climbed onto the first tier, surrounded by so many books. He wasn’t sure where to start. He saw his favorite dinosaur book, but he also saw other books—one pictured an Apatosaurus eating leaves, and another showed pterodactyls soaring above waterfalls. He climbed from tier to tier until he reached the top. From above, he noticed a stack of boxes in the corner of the store. The boxes were shaped like presents, but the bows and wrapping paper were missing. What could be inside them?

George leaped down and opened the boxes. They each contained a stack of the newest Penny the Penguin picture books. George wondered why the books were in boxes; they should be in a big display like the dinosaur books. George had an idea!

He got to work right away, balancing the books one by one as if he were building with blocks. People marveled at what he was doing, except for the man with the yellow hat, who was engrossed in his new bird-watching guide. The tower of books grew and grew, and so did the crowd’s amazement. “What a wonderful display!” said a woman. “Look what that monkey made!” exclaimed a little boy.

“Stop!” shouted a nearby bookseller. “You shouldn’t have opened those boxes!” But George was having too much fun to notice. From the top of his display, George looked down and finally saw the bookseller, the manager, and the man with the yellow hat peering up at him.

“You opened all of our boxes!” complained the bookseller. The manager smiled at George. “He certainly did, and now we don’t have to! I think his tower of books is a masterpiece.” The manager asked George if he would like to help with the signing. George was delighted; he would finally get to meet his favorite author!

George made sure each book was open to the right page, ready for the author’s signature. He thought it was funny that her name was Penny, just like the penguin in her books. As she finished signing the last book, Penny turned to George and smiled. “Thank you so much for all of your help today! It was great to have the extra hand. But there’s one book I still need to sign.” She inscribed the book and handed it to George. Inside was a note saying, “To my new friend George.”

George loved his new book; it was special and one-of-a-kind. He had such an adventurous day at the bookstore and couldn’t wait to visit again.
