Meet Iz and Norb

Look, there’s Iz and there’s Norb. Aren’t they cute? Let’s see what fun places they visit!

Where Are You?

Where are you? Lounging in my nook, reading a good book, just like us!

Where are you? Sitting on a cinder block, knitting a cozy winter sock.

Where are you? Eating a yummy plum with my friend on a lumpy stump.

Where are you? Riding George, the porpoise, past big, splashing orcas.

Where are you? Getting ready to eat spaghetti with Freddy, the Yeti.

Where are you? Riding on a giraffe, munching on alpaca-shaped crackers.

Where are you? Surfing with Rusty McDuck, but my goose feels a bit loose!

Oh no, a bit loose!

Where Are You, Goofus?

Oh, I’m here in this box, safe from bumps and knocks.

Uh-oh! Do you want to come play?

Not right now, I’m a bit shy. Maybe we can snack on the way?

If you’re not happy where you are, don’t just sit and feel sad. Get up and make a change! You can do anything you choose!

Where Are You?

Oops, I missed the end of your story! I had to help an Eskimo on the beach. Then I wrote a song about squashes and tested my rocket!

Thanks for the fun adventure!

The end.

  • What was your favorite part of the adventure with Iz and Norb? Can you think of a place you would like to visit with them?
  • Iz and Norb went to many fun places. Where is your favorite place to go, and what do you like to do there?
  • In the story, Goofus was feeling a bit shy. Have you ever felt shy? What do you do to feel better or more comfortable?
  1. Adventure Map: Create a simple map with your child using paper and crayons. Draw different locations from the story, like the nook, the cinder block, and the lumpy stump. Ask your child to place Iz and Norb (you can use small toys or paper cutouts) in different locations on the map. Encourage them to tell their own story about where Iz and Norb are and what they are doing. This activity helps children visualize the story and use their imagination to create new adventures.

  2. Where Are You? Game: Play a fun game of “Where Are You?” with your child. Take turns describing a place or activity, and the other person has to guess where you are or what you are doing. For example, “Where are you? I’m sitting on a soft chair, reading a book.” This game encourages children to use descriptive language and think creatively about different scenarios.

  3. Observation Walk: Go on a short walk with your child around your neighborhood or a nearby park. As you walk, ask your child to observe their surroundings and describe where they are and what they see. For example, “Where are you? I’m standing by a tall tree, watching a bird fly by.” This activity helps children connect the story to real-life experiences and enhances their observation skills.

Hi friends! Welcome to Book Storytime! I am so excited to have you all here with us today because we are going to read one of my favorite books. It’s called “Where Are You” by Jonathan Sundy. This is such a fun book because we get to meet Iz and Norb. Are you ready? Come on, let’s dive in!

That’s Iz and that’s Norb. Aren’t they cute?

Where are you? Lounging in my nook, reading a good book, just like us.

Where are you? Sitting on a cinder block, knitting me a winter sock.

Where are you? Having a yummy plump plum with my lumpy stump chum.

Where are you? Riding George, the gorgeous porpoise, past enormous surging orcas.

Where are you? Getting ready to slurp spaghetti with Freddy, the sweaty Yeti.

Where are you? Riding on the back of a giraffe, gone quackers while snacking on a pack of alpaca-shaped crackers.

Where are you? Surfing off a blue spruce with old Rusty McDuck, but my trusty goose feels a wee bit loose.

Oh, a wee bit loose!

Where are you, Goofus?

Oh, I’m here in this box, safe from hard knocks.

Uh-oh! Do you want to come play?

Not right now, I’m afraid. We could snack on the way.

I think I’ll just stay.

If the place where you are isn’t the place that you want, don’t sit where you are feeling glum. Get up and start working to change where you’re from. Because bruises and gooses and fears and excuses can’t stop you from living the life that you choose.

Where are you?

Oh, sorry for skipping the end of your speech! Had to rescue an Eskimo lost on the beach. Then I wrote a hit song about butternut squashes. Now I’m testing some specs on my rocket gashes.

Thanks for the boost!

The end.

What did you think of that book? Wasn’t it so fun to meet Iz and Norb? I love Book Storytime, and I hope to see you again for our next book, so come back again soon!
