Hi everyone! Today, we’re going to have a fun time with a story called “Swapsies” by Fiona Roberton. Are you ready? Let’s go!
Do you know what swapsies are? It’s when you trade something you have for something someone else has. Let’s see how it works in our story!
Meet Fang! Fang loves socks. Socks are yellow, striped, and squishy. They even smell like bananas! Fang thinks socks are amazing.
Here comes Philip! He has a favorite toy too. It’s a train! The train is red, shiny, and makes a honking sound. It smells like tomatoes and looks like so much fun!
Fang says, “Swapsies!” and Philip agrees because he loves to share. Now Fang has the train, and he loves it!
Next, Simon arrives with his favorite toy. It’s a ball! The ball is blue, round, and bouncy. It smells like chocolate chip cookies. Fang thinks it’s the best toy ever!
Fang wants to swap again, and Simon agrees because he wants to play with the train. Now Fang has the ball, and he thinks it’s the most spectacular toy in the world!
Fang misses the ball and the sock too. But look, here come Philip and Simon again. They still have the train and the sock.
Fang finds a stick! It’s brown and smells like a dog. Fang thinks it’s fantastic and suggests another swap. Philip agrees because he loves sharing.
Fang and his sock are back together, and Fang promises never to swap it again. He loves his sock the most!
How did you like “Swapsies”? It’s fun to share and swap toys, but sometimes it’s nice to keep your favorite toy close. Thanks for joining us for storytime! See you again soon!
Swapsies Adventure: Create a small “Swapsies” corner in your classroom or at home. Gather a few toys or items that children can swap with each other. Encourage them to describe their items using words like color, shape, and smell, just like in the story. Ask them to think about why they might want to swap their item and what makes the other item interesting. After swapping, discuss how they feel about their new item and if they miss their old one.
Favorite Toy Drawing: Ask the children to draw their favorite toy and describe it using their senses. What color is it? What does it smell like? How does it feel? Encourage them to share their drawings with the class and explain why their toy is special to them. Discuss how it would feel to swap their favorite toy with a friend and what they might want in return.
Observation Walk: Take the children on a short walk around the classroom or playground. Ask them to find objects they think would be fun to swap. Encourage them to use descriptive words to talk about these objects. For example, “This leaf is green and crunchy,” or “This rock is smooth and gray.” After the walk, discuss what they found and why they chose those items for swapping.
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“Swapsies”
What are swapsies? Do you know? Fang loves socks! I wonder why.
Socks are yellow, striped, and squeezable. Socks smell like bananas. Socks are amazing!
I love you, socks, Fang!
But look, here comes Philip. Philip has his favorite toy with him too.
What’s your favorite toy?
The train is red, shiny, and honks. The train smells like tomatoes. The train is magnificent and looks like lots of fun to play with!
“Say, swapsies!” suggests Fang.
“Yes, please!” says Philip, because Philip is very good at sharing.
I love you, train, says Fang.
Are you good at sharing?
But look, here comes Simon. Simon has his favorite toy with him too.
[Applause]
The ball is blue, round, and bouncy. The ball smells like chocolate chip cookies. The ball is spectacular and looks very fun to play with, says Fang.
Even more fun than the train and socks, suggests Fang.
“Okay,” says Simon, because Simon would really like to play with the train.
“I love you, ball,” says Fang.
You are the most spectacular toy in the whole wide world!
Fang is missing the ball, but he’s really missing the sock too.
But look, here comes Philip, and here comes Simon.
Simon still has the train, and Philip still has the sock.
“What happened to the ball?” asks Simon.
“The ball is no longer with us,” says Fang.
But look! I found a stick!
The stick is brown and smells like a dog. The stick is fantastic, he tells Philip.
“Swapsies!” suggests Fang.
“Yes, please!” says Philip, because Philip is very, very good at sharing.
Sock and Fang are back together forever and ever.
I love you, sock, says Fang.
I will never swap you again for any other toy!
Are you sure?
Oh well!
