In today’s storytime, we explored two engaging books: “Swarm of Bees” by Lemony Snicket and Rila Alexander, which tells a whimsical tale of a swarm of bees that, despite their initial anger, choose not to sting various characters, and ultimately find peace with the help of a beekeeper. We also read “Nurse Bear: First Aid” by Martha Almanza Esteva, where Nurse Bear teaches children about the important role of nurses and how they can help others in need, emphasizing basic first aid and hygiene practices. Both stories encourage kindness, teamwork, and the importance of caring for one another.
  1. What did the bees do when they saw the sailor and the mom?
  2. How can you help your friends when they get hurt?
  3. What do you think makes Nurse Bear special?

Welcome to Storytime!

Swarm of Bees

Today, we’re reading a book called “Swarm of Bees” by Lemony Snicket and Rila Alexander. Let’s dive into the story!

Oh no! There’s a swarm of bees, and they are feeling very angry. But don’t worry, they won’t sting anyone. Let’s see what happens!

The bees see a sailor who has been on a ship for a long time. He’s rushing to hug his mom. The bees won’t sting him!

Next, they see a mom who wants to show her new hairdo to a bricklayer. The bees won’t sting her either!

The bricklayer is busy building a wall and feeling hungry. The bees won’t sting him!

The bees fly to a food truck, but the chefs are busy chopping onions, and the customers are choosing drinks. The bees won’t sting anyone there!

There’s a cat hiding in the grass, and a bird with a worm in its mouth. The bees won’t sting them!

In an apartment, a man is watching TV with the window shut. The bees can’t sting him or his noisy neighbors playing cards. The little cousin is about to win, and she already hurt her toe today. The bees won’t sting her!

But there’s a boy throwing tomatoes everywhere! He throws them at the cousin, the neighbor’s window, the cat, the bird, the food truck, the bricklayer, the mom’s hairdo, and even the sailor! Oh no, the sailor is chasing him!

Where did everyone go? The bees are flying around, but they need to watch out for the laundry and the tow truck. Look out for the beekeeper!

The beekeeper catches the bees in a cozy sack. Now the bees feel calm and are going home. It’s better not to be angry. Time to clean up all those tomatoes!

Wasn’t that a fun story? I hope you liked “Swarm of Bees.” If you want to read it again, you can find it in the links below. Thanks for reading with us!

Nurse Bear: First Aid

Now, let’s read “Nurse Bear: First Aid” by Martha Almanza Esteva. Let’s see what Nurse Bear does!

Hi, I’m Bear, and I’m a nurse. I help kids and grown-ups feel better when they’re sick. I work in a hospital, but nurses also work in schools, ambulances, and helicopters. I have friends like Dr. Tiger, Monkey the dietitian, and Bunny the physiotherapist. We all work together to help you!

If someone is really sick, you can call us by dialing a special number. Do you know what it is? We come to help in an ambulance!

Nurses have special tools like plasters, gauze, drops, syrups, tablets, creams, bandages, and lots of love!

Oh, someone needs help! Let’s see what Nurse Bear does:

Cat the singer needs a check-up. Nurse Bear uses a pulse oximeter, a blood pressure monitor, a duck thermometer, and a stethoscope to see how Cat is feeling. Now Nurse Bear knows how to help!

You can help your friends too! Wash your hands with water and soap to keep germs away. Remember: water, soap, rub, rub, rub, rinse, and dry!

Pick the painter has a small cut. You can help! Wash your hands, press on the cut, clean it, dry it, put on a plaster, and tell a grown-up!

Elephant the chef has a burn. You can help! Run cold water over it, call for help, and cover it with cling film or a clean plastic bag!

Dog the builder bumped his head. You can help! Keep him calm, tell a grown-up, and hold something cold on his head!

Turtle the runner has asthma. When he has an attack, help him sit, stay calm, use his inhaler, and tell a grown-up!

Some friends have allergies, like Mouse the detective, who is allergic to nuts and cats. If you have allergies, tell your friends!

It was nice meeting you and showing you what nurses do. Remember, you can help too! If you need us, call for an ambulance. Nurses are like angels, and we should thank them for taking care of us!

  1. In the story “Swarm of Bees,” the bees choose not to sting anyone. Why do you think the bees decided not to sting the people and animals they saw? Can you think of a time when you chose to be calm instead of getting upset?
  2. In “Nurse Bear: First Aid,” Nurse Bear helps different animals with their injuries. Have you ever helped someone who was hurt or needed help? What did you do, and how did it make you feel?
  3. Both stories talk about helping others and staying calm. Why do you think it’s important to help others and stay calm when things go wrong? Can you share a story about a time when you helped someone or stayed calm in a tricky situation?
  1. Bee Observation Walk: Take a walk outside with an adult and look for bees or other insects. Observe what they are doing. Are they visiting flowers? Are they flying around? Talk about how bees help flowers grow by moving pollen from one flower to another. Draw a picture of what you saw and share it with your friends or family.

  2. Role-Playing First Aid: Gather some toys or stuffed animals and pretend they need first aid. Use band-aids, tissues, and pretend medicine to help them feel better. Practice washing your hands before and after helping your toy friends. Talk about why it’s important to keep clean when helping others.

  3. Emotion Exploration with Bees: Think about a time when you felt angry like the bees in the story. What helped you feel better? Draw a picture of something that makes you happy or calm. Share your picture and talk about it with a friend or family member. Discuss how it’s okay to feel angry, but it’s important to find ways to calm down.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How’s everyone doing today? How’s the weather where you are? It’s nice and sunny here today, and I’m super happy the sun’s out! I can get my laundry done, and my kids can play outside. I hope you got your dose of sunshine today, and thanks for taking the time to sit down and read with us.

Today we have a book called “Swarm of Bees” by Lemony Snicket and Rila Alexander. Let’s get started, shall we?

*Swarm of bees, swarm of bees, oh no, you are so angry! What would you do? Swarm of bees, swarm of bees, will you sting the sailor? No, he’s been on a ship for nine months, and he’s hurrying to hug his mother. Swarm of bees, swarm of bees, will you sting the mother? No, she’s about to tell the bricklayer all about her new hairdo. Swarm of bees, swarm of bees, will you sting the bricklayer? No, he’s starting a new part of the wall. He’s feeling very busy and very hungry.*

*Swarm of bees, you are still feeling angry, but you can’t sting anyone at the food truck. The chefs are chopping onions as quick as they can, and the customers are deciding what to drink with their lunches. You can’t sting the cat; the cat is trying very carefully to hide in the grass. And cat, you can’t pounce on a bird; it has a worm in its mouth.*

*Swarm of bees, swarm of bees, you can’t sting the man in the second-floor apartment watching television. His window is shut anyway because his neighbors are making so much noise, and you can’t sting the neighbors; they’re playing card games on the balcony, and the little cousin is about to win. You are still angry, but you can’t sting the little cousin; she already hurt herself today when she stubbed her toe, and that’s why she’s wearing that bandage.*

*Swarm of bees, are you going to sting the boy? He keeps throwing tomatoes! He threw one at the little cousin and stained her bandage. He threw one at the neighbor’s window and made a mess. He threw two tomatoes at the cat and three tomatoes at a bird who dropped the worm into a tomato on the ground. The boy threw a bunch of tomatoes at the food truck; he shouldn’t do that! The boy threw tomatoes at the bricklayer and at the mother’s hairdo. And look, swarm of bees, he threw a tomato at the sailor, and the sailor is chasing him!*

*Where did they go? Swarm of bees, where is everybody? In the backyard, watch out for the laundry! In the alley, watch out for the tow truck around the corner! Watch out for the beekeeper!*

*Beekeeper, swarm of bees! Well, now you’re in a sack. It’s warm and cozy in there; you calm down, and soon you’ll be going home. It can’t feel good to be angry; it can feel better to stop. And now it’s time to clean up all the tomatoes!*

*Hi, my name is Bear, and I am a nurse. I look after children and grown-ups when they are unwell. I work in a hospital. Nurses also work in schools, ambulances, and even helicopters. Nurses like me don’t work alone, and this is Dr. Tiger, the radiographer; Monkey, the dietitian; Bunny, the physiotherapist. Each of us is a part of a big team. We’re all here to look after you!*

*Remember, if you see someone who is really sick, you can call us by dialing… Do you remember the number? I have an emergency; I need an ambulance!*

*Nurses have many special tools to help people feel better. We have things like plasters, gauze, drops, syrups, tablets, creams, and medicines—scissors, bandages, syringes, tape, and lots of love!*

*Wait, someone needs my help! I will get my bag. I’m ready to do some checks! The pulse oximeter has a magic red light; it tells me how well Cat the singer is breathing and how strong her heart is. The blood pressure monitor shows me… My duck thermometer tells me if she’s too hot or too cold. The stethoscope lets me hear all the noises in her body. When I know whether Cat has a headache or an upset tummy, I know what to do!*

*You can help your friends when they’re feeling sick too! Let’s wash our hands to keep all the germs away. Water and soap are enough! Just remember these steps: water, soap, rub, rub, rub, rinse, and dry!*

*Pick the painter has a small cut. You can help! First, wash your hands, then press hard on the cut. Clean it with water, pat it dry with a clean towel, put on a plaster, and tell a grown-up!*

*Elephant the chef has a burn; her skin is red and sore. You can help! Hold the burn under cold running water for 10 minutes, shout for help, then cover it with cling film or a clean plastic bag!*

*Dog the builder banged his head; he’s crying and he has a bump. You can help! Help him stay calm, tell a grown-up, and hold something cold where he hit his head!*

*Turtle the runner has asthma. When he has an asthma attack, it’s hard for him to breathe, and he makes wheezing noises. You can help! Help him sit down, tell him not to worry, get his inhaler, and help him use it. Tell a grown-up about the inhaler spacer!*

*Some animals, boys and girls, have allergies. Allergies can make us feel unwell, so we always try to avoid the things we’re allergic to. Mouse the detective is allergic to nuts and cats. If you have allergies, tell your friends!*

*It was nice meeting you and showing you what nurses do. Remember, you can help a lot too! If you need us, call for an ambulance; we’re always here to help you! Nurses are angels, aren’t they? They do all the work, and we should give them lots of love for taking care of us!*
