Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m here with my friend Sophie. Hi, Sophie!
Today, we’re going to read a book called “On Vacation” by Cynthia Platt. But first, how are you feeling? Some of our friends are happy, excited, and even a bit sleepy. Let’s see if this book is perfect for you!
Wombat is tired of doing the same things every day, like brushing her teeth and eating veggies. She wants a vacation from all these chores. Her dad suggests she should try it, and Wombat is excited!
Wombat decides not to eat veggies or brush her teeth. She snacks on chips, sugary cereal, and even a special Australian treat called a lamington. She stays up late and skips bedtime, thinking it’s the best vacation ever!
The next morning, Wombat feels weird. Her teeth are yucky, her belly feels funny, and she’s very tired. She realizes she needs to get back to healthy habits.
Wombat brushes her teeth and eats her veggies. Her dad asks if she’s still on vacation, and Wombat says she’s back. She enjoyed her vacation but is glad to be home.
A vacation can be a trip with family or friends, or it can be a relaxing time at home. You can pretend you’re at the beach or in the snow, using your imagination to create fun adventures right where you are.
Wombats are special animals from Australia. They can enjoy vacations too, whether it’s a walk on the beach or relaxing at home. We even saw some pictures of wombats in different places!
We received a drawing from Wally, showing a sunny park with cars, paths, and a swing set. Anna shared a video of a baby fawn she found in her backyard while watering her plants. How exciting!
Think about where you’d like to go for your next vacation. It could be a pretend world at home, like a park or a beach. Use your imagination and have fun!
Thank you for joining us for reading, playing, and imagining. We’ll see you next time. Bye for now!
Vacation Imagination Box: Create your own “Vacation Imagination Box” at home. Gather a small box and fill it with items that remind you of a vacation. You can include seashells, small toys, or drawings of places you’d like to visit. Share your box with a family member or friend and explain why each item is special to your vacation story.
Healthy Habits Chart: Just like Wombat learned, healthy habits are important! Create a weekly chart with your family to track healthy habits like brushing your teeth, eating veggies, and getting enough sleep. Use stickers or draw smiley faces each time you complete a healthy habit. At the end of the week, celebrate your achievements with a fun activity!
Wombat Watch: Go on a “Wombat Watch” adventure! Research more about wombats and their natural habitat. Draw a picture of a wombat in its home and share a fun fact you learned with your class or family. You can also pretend to be a wombat and create a cozy space at home where you can relax, just like a wombat on vacation.
