Huckle the Highland Cow

Huckle is a very happy cow who loves to giggle and ask questions. He enjoys spending time with his friends in Huckleberry Hedge.

Orchid the Owl

Orchid is a wise owl who loves to fly high in the sky. He likes to keep things tidy and enjoys having fun with his friends.

Dumpling the Deer

Dumpling is a dreamy deer who likes to see where the day takes him. He sometimes finds new things a bit scary but loves making magical moments with his friends.

Fig the Fox

Fig is a smart fox who loves to read books. He often leads the group and always has answers when his friends have questions.

The Nighttime Adventure Begins

One evening, Huckle gathered his friends because he was feeling a bit sad. “What’s wrong, Huckle?” asked Fig the Fox. Huckle explained that he had never seen the sky at night and wanted to see the stars.

“Aren’t you scared?” asked Dumpling the Deer. “I won’t be scared if you’re all here with me,” said Huckle. His friends were a little worried, but they decided to stay and see the night sky together.

Discovering the Little Light

As the sun went down, Huckle and his friends saw a bright light in the sky. “What is that?” asked Orchid the Owl. Dumpling thought it might be a spaceship!

But Fig the Fox knew the answer. “It’s a Little Star!” he said proudly. The friends were amazed by the twinkling star and decided to watch the stars every night from then on.

The End

And that was the story of “Tales of Huckleberry Hedge: The Little Light.” We hope you enjoyed it! Remember, you can always look up at the night sky and see the stars too. Thank you for joining us today, and we’ll see you next time for more stories. Bye-bye!

  • What do you think it would be like to see the night sky for the first time, just like Huckle? Have you ever seen something new that made you feel amazed?
  • If you were one of the forest friends, which one would you be and why? What kind of adventures would you like to have with them?
  • Why do you think it’s important to have friends with you when you’re trying something new or a little scary? Can you think of a time when your friends helped you feel brave?
  1. Starry Night Craft: Create your own night sky! Gather some black or dark blue paper, white crayons or chalk, and stickers shaped like stars. Draw the night sky with your friends, just like Huckle and his friends saw. Add as many stars as you like and imagine what stories they might tell. Can you spot any shapes or patterns in your starry sky?

  2. Nighttime Adventure Role Play: Pretend to be one of the forest friends from the story. What would you say if you were Huckle, Orchid, Dumpling, or Fig? Take turns acting out the story with your classmates or family. How would you feel seeing the stars for the first time? Share your thoughts and feelings with each other.

  3. Star Gazing Journal: Start a simple journal to record what you see in the night sky. With the help of an adult, go outside on a clear night and look up at the stars. Draw what you see and write a sentence about it. Do you notice any changes in the sky each night? Share your journal with your friends and talk about your discoveries.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime family. How are you today? Have you been reading lots of books on your own? Have you been doing well in school and learning lots of new things? Well, I hope you’re ready to read with us today! We have a book called “Tales of Huckleberry Hedge: The Little Light” by Kirsten Lee Goldie. Let’s get started!

Meet Huckle the Highland Cow. Huckle is the happiest Highland cow you will ever meet. He’s full of kindness, curiosity, and giggles. Huckle asks a lot of questions, but his friends love him for it, which explains why Huckle’s favorite thing to do is spend every moment with them in Huckleberry Hedge.

Meet Orchid the Owl. Orchid is an orderly owl. Despite being the only friend in the group who can glide and soar through the sky, Orchid is a very wise and caring character who loves nothing more than a tidy schedule and an organized day of fun with his forest friends.

Meet Dumpling the Deer. Dumpling is a daydreaming deer. He tends to go with the flow and prefers to see where the day will take him. Although he does find new things a little scary at times, Dumpling loves nothing more than making magical moments with his dear friends in Huckleberry Hedge.

Meet Fig the Fox. Fig is the most factual fox you will ever read about. If his nose isn’t stuck in a book, you’ll find him playing with his forest friends. He likes to take the lead of the group, and if there’s something his friends are unsure of, Fig will always have the answers.

And so the story begins! Huckle, as day became night, had his friends all gathered to check if he was alright. “No, I’m not,” sighed Huckle, feeling sad. It wasn’t like him to feel so down. “What seems to be the problem?” asked Fig the Fox. “Do you have measles or chickenpox?” Huckle’s friends jumped back in surprise, but Huckle just chuckled and looked to the sky. “It’s nothing like that,” Huckle said with delight. “I’ve just never seen the sky when the day turns to night.” He was always in bed, tucked up and asleep, but tonight he was hoping to catch just a glimpse of the darkness and gloom everyone feared.

“But aren’t you scared of what could be?” squeaked Dumpling the Deer. “I won’t be scared if you’re all here with me. The night will make things magical. Stay here and see!” His friends shook their heads, but the sun was now gone, and they hadn’t realized they had been talking so long. “Oh no, we’re all doomed!” Fig cried with dread. “We’re going to get lost,” said Orchid, shaking his head. “Look at my legs; they’re shaking with fear!”

Huckle just sighed as he looked at his friends. They were running in circles over flowers and stems. “When you all calm down, will you come take a seat?” Huckle asked sharply, stomping his feet. Huckle’s friends stopped and bundled him tight. “Why are you all so afraid of the night? I promise it’s okay; I’ll never tell a lie.” His friends began to smile as they gazed up at the sky. Huckle pointed upwards and asked, “What’s that light?” As his friends all looked toward the peculiar sight, a street lamp built to light the sky was revealed.

“But it’s too high!” Orchid replied. “A spaceship, perhaps?” Dumpling the Deer suggested to the mysterious glow. But the light wasn’t moving as it sparkled so brightly. Then Fig the Fox stood up with his paw held proudly. “I know what it is! I’ve read about it before. It’s called the Little Star, and apparently, there are more!”

The friends were left speechless as they looked to the star, mesmerized by its sparkle that shone from afar. They all gazed in awe at the light, and from that moment on, they watched the stars every night.
