Hello, everyone! Welcome back to Storytime Family. How are you doing today? I hope you’re having a great day! Maybe it’s getting warmer where you are, and summer is coming. Over here, it’s getting a bit chilly, but I’m waiting for the sun to shine again!
Today, we’re reading a fun story called “The Astronaut Cat” by Toby Riddle. Let’s dive in!
This story is about a cat who loves being inside. Inside, there’s air to breathe, and the cat likes that. Outside, there are just rocks and dust, and the cat isn’t too fond of that. But the cat loves to look outside because it looks amazing!
Inside, the cat has lots of fun things to do. She plays with her ball, eats, sleeps, and plays some more. While the cat is inside, the astronaut is outside working. Outside, it’s super hot in the sun, and at night, it’s as cold as a freezer!
There are tiny rocks called micrometeoroids zooming around outside, and there’s no sound. The cat likes sound, like the bell in her ball and the astronaut’s voice. But outside still looks amazing!
In the cat’s dreams, she goes outside. She jumps and bounces like she’s lighter than a balloon. She dreams of a big blue ball in the sky, full of colors, sounds, and sweet smells. In her dreams, she’s an outside cat!
But when she wakes up, she remembers she’s the astronaut’s cat, and she’s happy to be an inside cat.
Wasn’t that a fun story? Do you like cats? Let us know what you think about the book!
Now, let’s read “Diary of an Astronaut” by Annabelle Blake and Deborah Holt. Are you ready?
This story is about an astronaut named Luna who lives in space. Luna has a busy job! She exercises, does science experiments, fixes the space station, and even does chores!
Today is a special day—it’s Luna’s 100th day in space! She gets a package from Earth with pancake ingredients. Luna makes 100 pancakes and stacks them super high!
But before she can eat, she hears a strange sound. It’s Jupiter, feeling sad because of asteroids. Luna helps Jupiter feel better.
Then, Uranus is cold and sneezes loudly. Luna wraps Uranus in a big scarf to keep warm.
Next, Neptune is upset because Pluto is crying. Luna wonders why Pluto is sad. Pluto feels like he’s not a real planet. Luna wants to cheer Pluto up.
Suddenly, Luna hears a call for help from Mars. A dust storm has trapped the rover, Curiosity. Luna rushes to help!
Saturn is also upset because her rings are missing. Luna reassures Saturn that she’s still beautiful.
Venus is scared of a tiny spider named Martha. Luna finds Martha and takes her home.
Finally, Earth is missing a hat and is melting. Luna chases the hat thief and gets help from Mercury, the fastest planet, to catch the thief.
After a busy day, Luna returns home with Saturn’s rings, Neptune’s kite, and Earth’s hat. She throws a party to cheer Pluto up, and everyone enjoys delicious pancakes!
Do you like pancakes? They are so yummy!
And that’s the end of “Diary of an Astronaut.” It was a fun and educational story! If you enjoyed it, let us know, and don’t forget to eat lots of delicious food. Bye for now!
Space Adventure Drawing: Imagine you are an astronaut like Luna or a cat dreaming of space adventures. Draw a picture of what you would see and do in space. Would you bounce on the moon like the cat, or help planets like Luna? Share your drawing with your friends and explain your space adventure story.
Sound and Silence Experiment: Just like the cat loves sounds, let’s explore different sounds and silence. Close your eyes and listen carefully to the sounds around you for one minute. What do you hear? Now, try to be as quiet as possible for one minute. How does it feel? Discuss with your classmates how sound and silence are different and why the cat might like one more than the other.
Planet Role Play: In the story, Luna helps different planets with their problems. Choose a planet and think about what kind of help it might need. With a friend, act out a scene where you are Luna helping your chosen planet. What would you say or do to make the planet feel better? Share your role play with the class.

Thank you for sitting down and reading with us! Today, we have “The Astronaut Cat” by Toby Riddle. Let’s get started, shall we?
The Astronaut Cat is an inside cat, and she likes it like that. Inside has air; outside doesn’t. The cat likes air. Outside, there are only rocks and dust, and the cat isn’t so keen on that. But the cat does like to look outside; outside looks amazing.

Inside, the cat has lots to do. She plays with her ball, she eats, she sleeps, and she plays with her ball again. While the cat is inside, the astronaut is often outside working. Outside, it’s so hot in the sun that the bowl of water could quickly boil. Ouch! Thanks, cat! But at night, it’s ten times colder than a fridge freezer. Thanks, cat!
Then there are tiny rocks called micrometeoroids whizzing around at 10 kilometers per second. That troubles the cat, and there’s no sound. The cat likes sound—the sound of the bell in her ball, the sound of the astronaut. But outside still looks amazing.
In the cat’s dreams, she goes outside. She leaps and pounces further than she’s ever leapt or pounced. She glides from silvery rock to silvery rock and bounces in the fine gray dust like she’s lighter than a birthday balloon. Then she dreams of a blue ball rising in the ink-black sky, and in her dreams, she dreams she’s on the big blue ball. Everywhere there is color and movement and a million shapes and forms. It’s not too hot, and it’s not too cold, and water flows in rivers and pools and ponds, and sweet air fills her full with a thousand scents and carries sounds that make music.
And there she is—an outside cat. But then the cat wakes up from her dreams. She remembers that she’s the astronaut’s cat, and she’s an inside cat, and that is that.

“Diary of an Astronaut.” There is an astronaut who lives way up in space. Her name is Lily Bobby Julieta Crumpet Pickled Ella, but everyone calls her Luna. Being an astronaut is a busy job. Every day, there’s lots for Luna to do. She exercises to keep her bones strong, runs science experiments, repairs the space station, and does her chores. Yes, even in space, there are chores! Can you imagine?
Today is a very special day—today is Luna’s hundredth day in space! A package has arrived from Earth to help Luna celebrate. It is filled with delicious pancake ingredients. Luna spends all morning cooking 100 pancakes and stacking them up high. In microgravity, you can stack pancakes as tall as a giraffe, for real!
As Luna is about to take her first bite, she hears a strange sound: whomp! The whomp keeps whomping. How curious, says Luna. She dashes off to investigate before her pancakes get cold. She follows the whomp to Jupiter, who’s feeling sad and sore. Maybe too much exercise? For Jupiter has been hit by speeding asteroids. In a jiffy, Luna pulls out her first aid kit and patches Jupiter up.
She’s about to turn back to her pancakes when—ah! Uranus lets out an almighty cosmic sneeze. “I’m freezing,” says Uranus. “I can’t feel my toes!” No problem is too tricky for Luna, and she knows just what to fix. She grabs a ginormous scarf and tucks Uranus in nice and snug.
Luna is about to return to her delicious pancake when she’s interrupted by Neptune. On the far edge of the solar system lives Neptune. Neptune is a cold, dark, and windy planet with a terrible temper. “Pluto’s crying is giving me a headache,” Neptune grumbles. “I’m trying to fly my kites in peace!”
As Pluto’s sobs grow louder and louder, Luna thinks of her pancakes growing colder and colder. So, what is making Pluto so sad, she wonders? The pancakes will have to wait. Giant salty tears are flying through space, and Pluto’s sobs are so loud, Luna has to cover her ears.
All the other planets are saying, “I’m not a real planet,” Pluto wails. Luna’s heart feels heavy—a crying planet is a sad sight. Just as she’s thinking of a way to cheer Pluto up, her radio buzzes: “Help! Help! A terrible dust storm is raging on Mars! Curiosity, the rover, is trapped deep inside!”
Luna sweeps to the rescue. “Help!” As she emerges, a loud screech stops her in her tracks. “I’m naked!”
Usually, Saturn is the most dazzling planet in the solar system with enormous shimmering swirling rings, but today Saturn’s rings are nowhere in sight. “I woke up from my beauty nap, and my rings were missing,” says Saturn, blushing. “I’m hideous! Don’t look at me!”
“You still look beautiful,” Luna reassures her.
As a flaming hot fireball whizzes overhead, Venus is trembling with fear. “What is that monster?” screams Venus, pointing to a small black dot. Something has given Venus quite the fright. Luna peers in, and to her surprise, she spots Martha, her pet spider. “Hello, Venus! I won’t hurt you!”
Oh, nice to meet you, Martha! She scoops up Martha and is ready to take her home when—come back here! Luna and Martha take a detour past Earth to see what all the commotion is about. “Someone stole my hat! I’m melting!” Earth says in a panic.
“A hat thief?” says Luna. Her brain puzzles, her tummy grumbles, and Martha shouts after them. So Luna sets off on a mad space chase. But the faster she flies, the hungrier she feels. Poor thing—grumble, grumble, hungry, grumble, grumble, grumble—”Feed me pancakes!”
Just as the thieves are getting away, Luna has an idea. Aha! She presses a red button on her radio to call for help. Mercury, the fastest planet in the whole solar system, answers the call. Mercury zooms past and snatches the cheeky thieves before they escape. “Gotcha!”
By the time Luna reaches Earth with the hat, Saturn’s rings, and Neptune’s kite, the day is almost over. Back home at last, Luna drools as she looks at her delicious banana berry sprinkle winkle choc chip maple syrup pancake stacks. She knows there is only one thing left to do—parties always cheer Pluto up!
“Being a planet is overrated anyway!”
“These are delicious!”
“They do look pretty delicious! Those are some happy planets!”
Do you love pancakes? Well, I do, and my boys can never have enough pancakes!
