Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “The Bears in the Bed and the Great Big Storm” by Paul Bright and Jane Chapman. Are you ready? Let’s begin!
One night, the wind was blowing very hard. It made the trees sway and the leaves dance. The wind howled and roared over the hills. But inside their cozy house, Bear and Mrs. Bear were sleeping peacefully in their bed.
Suddenly, Bear felt a little tug on his blanket. It was Baby Bear! “There’s a monster outside! It’s making scary noises, and I’m frightened. Can I sleep in your bed?” asked Baby Bear.
“There’s no such thing as monsters,” said Bear. But he let Baby Bear snuggle up in the bed to feel safe and warm.
Then, the thunder crashed loudly! It made the house shake and the windows rattle. Bear felt a tap on his shoulder. It was Little Bear. “There’s a monster outside! It sounds like it’s growling and grumbling. Can I sleep with you?” asked Little Bear.
“There’s no such thing as monsters,” said Bear. But he let Little Bear snuggle up too.
Next, Bear saw lightning flash across the sky. It made shadows on the walls. Bear felt a tap on his nose. It was Young Bear. “There’s a monster outside! It has big horns and it’s making shadows on my wall. Can I come and sleep in your bed?” asked Young Bear.
“There is no such thing as monsters!” said Bear. But he let Young Bear climb into the bed.
Now, Bear was wide awake. He listened to the wind and thunder. The shadows did look like monster horns! Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Everyone woke up. “Who could that be?” asked Bear.
Bear was a little nervous, but he went to the door. When he opened it, the wind blew out his candle, and it was very dark. Then, the lightning flashed, and Bear shouted, “A monster!” and hid under the bed.
“It’s not a monster; it’s a moose!” said Moose, stepping inside. “The storm is blowing my house away. Can I sleep in yours?”
Bear peeked out from under the bed. Baby Bear, Little Bear, and Young Bear laughed. “You are the monster!” they giggled.
And that’s how the bears learned that sometimes things aren’t as scary as they seem. They all snuggled up together and had a cozy sleep.
Thank you for joining us for this story! If you enjoyed it, be sure to come back for more fun stories. See you next time!
Monster Shadows Experiment: At home, use a flashlight to create shadows on the wall. Try making different shapes with your hands or toys. Ask your child to describe what they see. Discuss how shadows can sometimes look like something else, just like in the story. Encourage them to think about how the bears felt and how they realized the shadows weren’t monsters.
Weather Sounds Exploration: Go outside on a windy day or listen to recordings of different weather sounds like wind, thunder, and rain. Ask your child to close their eyes and imagine what could be making those sounds. Discuss how the bears in the story thought the sounds were monsters and how they learned what the sounds really were.
Draw Your Own Cozy Bed: Provide paper and crayons for your child to draw a picture of a cozy bed where they feel safe. Encourage them to add their favorite stuffed animals or family members. Talk about how Bear let everyone snuggle up to feel safe during the storm and how being together can make us feel better when we’re scared.

“The Bears in the Bed and the Great Big Storm” by Paul Bright and Jane Chapman.
How the wind blew! It howled in the treetops, making the branches bend and creak, and the leaves shiver and shake. It blew over the hills and high places, howling and wailing through the rocky passes. Bear and Mrs. Bear slept warm and snug and untroubled in their bed.
Then Bear felt a tugging at his blanket. He opened one eye. There was Baby Bear. “There’s a monster outside! I can hear it howling and wailing, and I’m scared. Can I sleep in your bed?”
“There’s no such thing as monsters,” said Bear. “What a scaredy bear you are!” But he pulled back the covers, and Baby Bear snuggled up warm and safe.
How the thunder crashed! It boomed and crackled, making the house shudder and the windows rattle. It grumbled and rumbled, echoed and faded, only to boom and crash again. Mrs. Bear, Baby Bear, and Little Bear slept warm and snug and untroubled in their bed, but Bear was barely awake with his paws over his ears.
Then Bear felt a tapping on his shoulder. It was Little Bear. “There’s a monster outside! Its tummy is rumbling and grumbling like it’s going to eat me. Can I sleep with you?”
“There’s no such thing as monsters,” said Bear. “You’re another scaredy bear!” But he lifted the cover, and Little Bear snuggled up warm and safe.
“Oh no, there’s no such thing as monsters,” Bear thought, but then he remembered the lightning that flashed and forked, lighting the scurrying clouds and casting quick shadows on the windows and walls. Mrs. Bear, Baby Bear, and Little Bear slept warm and snug and untroubled in their bed, but Bear was barely awake with his pillow wrapped around his head.
Then Bear felt a tap on his nose. It was Young Bear. “There’s a monster outside! It has huge twisted horns and it’s making shadows on my wall. Can I come and sleep in your bed?”
“There is no such thing as monsters!” cried Bear, but he let Young Bear climb into the bed, where he snuggled up warm.
Now Bear was wide awake. He listened to the wind howling and the thunder crashing. He watched the lightning fork and flash. Young Bear was right; the shadows on the wall did look like monster horns, and he pulled the bed covers right over his head.
Suddenly, there was a rat-tat-tat at the door. Everybody woke at once. “Who could that be?” said Bear.
“It’s probably nothing at all,” said Mrs. Bear. She gave Bear a little push. Bear climbed nervously out of bed. He picked up a candle to light his way and patted slowly, ever so slowly, to the door. “You’re all such scaredy bears. There’s no such thing as monsters,” he said.
As he turned the handle, the wind blew the door open, the candle went out, and everything was black as black. Then the lightning flashed.
“A monster!” shouted Bear. He jumped back and dove straight under the bed.
“It’s not a monster; it’s a moose!” said Moose, stepping through the doorway. “The storm is blowing my house away. Can I sleep in yours?”
Bear peered out from under the bed. Baby Bear, Little Bear, and Young Bear laughed and laughed. “You are the monster!” they said.
But if Moose comes in your house, run!
