In this lesson, students explore the concept of animal camouflage, using the stick insect as a prime example of how blending into the environment helps animals evade predators. Through a fun experiment, participants simulate a bird searching for bugs, demonstrating how color and surroundings affect visibility and survival. The lesson emphasizes the importance of camouflage in nature and encourages further exploration of animal adaptations.
  1. What is camouflage and how do you think it helps animals like the stick insect?
  2. During the experiment, why do you think you found more green bugs than red ones?
  3. Can you think of another animal that uses camouflage? How do you think it helps that animal survive?

Discover the Magic of Animal Camouflage!

Hey there! Have you ever noticed how some animals can blend in with their surroundings? Just like Squeaks, who can hide among the lab equipment, many animals use camouflage to stay safe from predators. Let’s dive into the world of camouflage and see how it helps animals survive!

Meet the Stick Insect

One of the coolest examples of camouflage is the stick insect. These insects look just like sticks! They live in places with lots of trees and bushes, making it hard for predators like birds to spot them. If a bird can’t see the stick insect, it can’t eat it. This clever disguise helps the stick insect stay safe and survive.

Try a Fun Experiment!

Want to see how camouflage works? Let’s do a simple experiment. You’ll pretend to be a bird searching for bugs in the grass. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A friend to help you
  • A timer
  • A green, grassy spot
  • 10 green things and 10 red things to use as pretend bugs (like pieces of paper, clothespins, or small toys)

Once you have your pretend bugs, head to your grassy spot. Close your eyes while your friend spreads the red and green bugs around. When they’re ready, they’ll start a timer for 30 seconds and say “go!” Open your eyes and try to grab as many bugs as you can!

What Did You Find?

After 30 seconds, count how many bugs of each color you caught. Did you find more red bugs than green ones? That’s because the green bugs blended in with the grass, making them harder to see. This is just like how real animals use camouflage to survive.

Why Camouflage Matters

If these bugs were real, the green ones would have a better chance of surviving and having green babies. Over time, there would be more green bugs than red ones. This is how camouflage helps animals survive and change over time.

Try this experiment at home and see what you discover! Remember to clean up your pretend bugs when you’re done. Camouflage is a fascinating way animals protect themselves, and there are many more amazing ways they survive and adapt. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

See you next time for more exciting discoveries!

  • Have you ever played hide and seek? How do you think animals use camouflage like a game of hide and seek to stay safe?
  • Can you think of any other animals that might use camouflage to hide from predators or to sneak up on their prey? What do they look like?
  • Imagine you are an animal that needs to hide. What colors or patterns would you choose to blend into your surroundings, and why?
  1. Camouflage Art Project: Create your own camouflage artwork! Gather some colored paper, crayons, or markers. Choose an animal you like and draw it on a piece of paper. Now, think about where this animal might live. Is it in a forest, desert, or ocean? Use colors and patterns to make your animal blend into its background. Share your artwork with a friend or family member and see if they can spot your hidden animal!

  2. Nature Walk Observation: Go on a nature walk with an adult and look for animals or insects that use camouflage. Can you find a butterfly that blends in with the flowers or a lizard that matches the rocks? Take a notebook and draw or write about what you see. Discuss with your adult how these animals might be using camouflage to stay safe.

  3. Camouflage Story Time: Imagine you are a stick insect living in a big forest. Write a short story or draw a comic strip about your day. What challenges do you face? How does your camouflage help you hide from predators? Share your story with your class or family and talk about why camouflage is important for survival.
