Hi, friends! Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “The Day I Met My Shadow.” It’s written and drawn by Melissa Brown. Let’s see what happens!
One sunny day, I went outside to play with my colorful sidewalk chalk. I was ready to draw when I saw something surprising! There was a dark spot on the ground right in front of me. It looked like a funny, lumpy heart shape.
I felt a little scared and stepped back. But guess what? The spot moved too and started to grow bigger! My heart went thump-thump because I didn’t know what was happening. I tried to run away, shouting loudly. Then, the sun hid behind the clouds, and the spot disappeared!
I stopped running and noticed something amazing. When I waved my hands in the air, the spot did the same! How cool is that?
When I went left, it went left. When I went right, it went right too. It followed me everywhere!
Wait a minute! The spot had arms and legs and a head, just like me! “Hello, are you okay?” I asked, trying to help it up. But it stayed on the ground.
Just then, my sister came outside. I asked her about the spot. She laughed and said, “That’s my shadow, silly! Look, you have one too! Shadows happen when something blocks the light.”
“This is my shadow!” I said with a big smile. We waved our arms and made shadow puppets until the sun went down.
Can you find your shadow? Try making funny shapes with it!
And that’s the end of “The Day I Met My Shadow.” Did you have fun? Thanks for joining us! See you next time for another story. Bye!
Shadow Dance: Go outside on a sunny day and find your shadow. Try moving your arms, legs, and whole body to see how your shadow changes. Can you make your shadow look like different animals or objects? Ask a friend or family member to join you and create a shadow dance together. What happens to your shadows when you jump or spin?
Shadow Art: Use sidewalk chalk to trace your shadow on the ground. Try doing this at different times of the day and notice how your shadow changes. Is it longer or shorter in the morning compared to the afternoon? Draw funny faces or outfits on your shadow outline to turn it into a character. What story can you create with your shadow character?
Shadow Hunt: Go on a shadow hunt around your home or neighborhood. Look for shadows made by trees, buildings, or other objects. Take a piece of paper and draw the different shadows you find. Can you guess what is making each shadow? Share your shadow drawings with a friend and see if they can guess too!

Hi, guys! Welcome to the Story Time Family. Today, we have “The Day I Met My Shadow,” written and illustrated by Melissa Brown. Let’s check it out!
I went outside to play one day and brought along my sidewalk chalk. When I crouched down to start my drawing, I was surprised by what I saw. A dark, suspicious spot lay flat on the ground, sprawled out right in front of me in a lumpy, heart-shaped mound. I stood up feeling frightened and backed up slowly. To my surprise, the spot stood up too and began to grow!
With each step I took backwards, the bigger the spot grew. My heart started beating faster; I didn’t know what to do. I tried to run away from it while screaming really loud. Suddenly, it disappeared when the sun hid behind the clouds. Just then, I decided to give up and noticed something strange. When I threw my hands up in the air, the spot did exactly the same. How freaky is that, right?
When I went left, it went left. When I went right, so did it. No matter which way I went, it just kept following me.

Wait a minute! It has arms and legs! It has a head just like I do! The spot is a person—how can this be true?
“Hello, are you okay?” I asked, and then I tried to help him up. But no matter how much I tugged and pulled, he just remained there stuck. Just then, my sister came outside, wondering why I looked confused.
“Where did she come from?” I asked, pointing to the girl stuck to her shoes.
“That’s my shadow, silly! Look, you have one too! It happens when an object blocks the light from passing through.”
“This is my shadow!” I said excitedly as I waved my arms around. Then together, we made shadow puppets until the sun went down.
Whose shadow is this? Can you tell?
