In today’s Story Time lesson, we explored “The Fog,” a charming tale about a little yellow bird named Warble who befriends a lost human during a mysterious fog on a chilly island. Together, they work to lift the fog by sending messages to the world, ultimately bringing back the island’s beauty and enjoying the clear night sky. The story teaches us the importance of friendship and collaboration in overcoming challenges.
  1. What did Warble do when he met the human in the fog?
  2. How did Warble and his new friend help each other?
  3. What happened when the fog started to lift?

Today’s Story: “The Fog”

Today, we have a special story called “The Fog” by Keo McClair and Cannon Park. Are you ready to hear it? Let’s go!

The Icy Island

Far away, there is a chilly island covered in ice. People from all over the world come to see this magical place. Many birds live there, but one little yellow bird named Warble loves to watch the people.

Warble’s Adventure

Warble is a happy bird who enjoys seeing new people every day. But one day, a warm fog came from the sea. It covered everything, making it hard to see. Warble waited and waited for the fog to go away, but it stayed.

Meeting a New Friend

One foggy day, Warble saw a colorful shape. It was a human! She was singing a song and looked a little lost. Warble was so happy to see her. He shared some yummy insects with her, and she liked them!

Working Together

The human and Warble became friends. They made paper boats and sent them out to sea to find others who could see the fog. Soon, they got messages from all over the world! Everyone wanted to help make the fog go away.

The Fog Lifts

With each message, the fog started to lift. The island became bright and beautiful again. Warble and his new friend could see the stars and the moon. They sang happy songs together, enjoying the clear night sky.

What a Wonderful Story!

Wasn’t that a lovely story? It reminds us that we can all help each other, just like Warble and his friend. Remember to stay safe and have fun with your family!

If you want to read more stories, make sure to come back soon. Take care, and bye for now!

  • What do you think it would be like to live on a chilly island like the one in the story? Would you enjoy it? Why or why not?
  • Have you ever seen fog before? How did it make you feel, and what did you do while it was foggy?
  • Warble made a new friend by sharing and helping. Can you think of a time when you made a new friend? What did you do together?
  1. Fog in a Jar: Let’s create our own fog! With the help of an adult, fill a jar with hot water and then pour it out, leaving only a little bit at the bottom. Quickly place a metal lid with ice cubes on top of the jar. Watch as fog forms inside the jar! Talk about how this is similar to the fog in the story. What do you see happening? How does it feel to make your own fog?

  2. Bird Watching Adventure: Just like Warble, let’s go on a bird-watching adventure! Take a walk outside with your family and try to spot different birds. Can you see any yellow birds like Warble? What other colors do you see? Draw a picture of your favorite bird and share it with your friends or family. How do you think these birds feel when they see people?

  3. Message in a Bottle: Warble and his friend sent messages to help lift the fog. Let’s create our own messages! Write or draw a happy message on a piece of paper. Roll it up and put it in a plastic bottle. You can pretend to send it out to sea or give it to a friend or family member. What message would you send to make someone happy? How do you think Warble felt when he received messages from all over the world?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi there, everyone! Welcome back to the Story Time family. How are you? I hope you’re enjoying lots of family time at home. I bet you have plenty of time to read! I hope you had some sunshine today; I had some sunshine in the yard, and it feels awesome!

Today, I have a book called “The Fog” by Keo McClair and Cannon Park. Shall we take a look and see what this book is about? Let’s go!

“The Fog”

Far north on a wild sea was an island covered with ice. People came from around the world to visit this special place. Most of the birds living on the island paid little attention to these visitors, but there was one bird, a small yellow warbler, who did pay attention.

Welcome to icy land! Oh, it must be so cold! Warble was a devoted human watcher. There was always a new human for him to observe, and nothing else made him happier.

But one spring day, something happened to interrupt his happiness. A warm fog rolled in from the sea. Morning long, it whispered and swirled, climbing hills and spilling into valleys. By lunchtime, the brightness of morning had faded to a silvery blue, and by the time the fog had turned everything ghostly, Warble sat high in his tree and waited for a strong gust of wind to lift the fog. He waited and waited.

Being a handy warbler, he tried to chase it away, but no matter what he did, the fog came back. Warble invited his neighbors over to discuss the situation.

“It’s just a little fog,” he said. “I wouldn’t even call it fog.”

But the fog continued to spread. Warble still waited in his tree, hoping to spot a human, but there were no more sightings. So he put away his books and tried his best to ignore the fog until even he began to wonder if things had ever been any different.

Then one foggy morning, Warble spotted a colorful shape in the distance. Peering closely, he saw a dark-haired human moving through the fog. It was a rare female species, and she was singing a song. She looked a bit lost, and they were both curious about each other. Happy to see a human again, Warble offered her insects to eat, and she liked them.

In return, the human offered Warble gifts and showed him how to fold intricate paper things. They stayed together, eating insects and folding paper, communicating in every way except with words. Until Warble made a surprising discovery: the human also saw the fog.

Warble asked the human if she thought there were others who saw the fog too. She was unsure how they could find out. That’s when she had an idea. She opened her backpack and set to work. The human made a paper boat and floated it out to sea. They waited for a reply, but none arrived. So they launched more boats and waited again.

Finally, they had an answer! It was a note from a walrus in Eastern Canada saying, “Yes, I see the fog.” Another note came from a mailbox in Norway: “Yes, and we want to fix it.” Another came from some cats in England: “Yes, we see. Are you a bird? Can we eat you?”

Notes arrived from around the world, and with each one, the fog began to lift a little, and the wind began to blow again. The world grew a little less ghostly, making it easier to notice things—big things, tiny things, shiny weird things, and soft, feathery things.

Slowly, the beautiful island brightened, and Warble and the human found time to rest under the stars, which they could now see. The moon drifted in the sky, and they began to sing. They sang to each other and to the moon, happy to be together, sharing the clear night view.

Wasn’t that a beautiful story? So appropriate for what we’re going through right now. Remember, we are in this together, and we can all come out together too. Stay strong, keep safe, and take care of your family and yourself.
