What is Christmas?

Christmas is a special time of year that many people look forward to. It’s a season filled with joy, decorations, and lots of fun activities. People start thinking about gifts for their friends and family, and they decorate their homes with beautiful ornaments and lights. In some places, it’s cold and snowy, while in others, like California or Florida, it’s warm enough to wear shorts!

Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. The word “Christmas” means “mass on Christ’s day,” which is a gathering to celebrate Jesus’s birth. Jesus is an important figure in Christianity, known as the Messiah and the Son of God. Although we celebrate his birth on December 25th, the exact date is not known for sure.

How Do People Celebrate Christmas?

For Christians, Christmas is a holy day and a time for religious celebrations. But even people who aren’t religious enjoy the holiday by spending time with family, exchanging gifts, and having fun. In different countries, Christmas has different names, like Yule in Germany, Navidad in Spanish, and Noel in French.

The Story of Jesus’s Birth

Jesus was born in Bethlehem, which is in present-day Israel. The nativity scene shows Jesus as a baby in a stable, surrounded by his mother Mary, his father Joseph, an angel, and the Three Wise Men who brought gifts. This story is an important part of Christmas traditions.

When Does Christmas Start?

While Christmas Day is on December 25th, some people start celebrating earlier with Advent. Advent begins on the first Sunday of December, and each Sunday, a candle is lit until four candles are glowing by Christmas.

Christmas Traditions and Symbols

There are many fun traditions and symbols associated with Christmas. Santa Claus, based on a kind man named St. Nicholas, is known for bringing gifts to children. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a famous character from a Christmas poem. Christmas trees, which started in Germany, are decorated with lights and ornaments. Other traditions include singing carols, drinking eggnog, and hanging wreaths.

Fun Characters and Activities

Frosty the Snowman is a popular character during Christmas time, and many families have their own special traditions. Whether it’s decorating the tree, baking cookies, or watching holiday movies, these activities make Christmas a magical time.

What is Christmas for kids? Christmas is a time we all love. Everyone waits patiently for December to arrive so we can start thinking about gifts, shopping for friends and family, and what ornaments and decorations will hang from the tree. The festive spirit is in the air, with Christmas carols sung in the cold, crisp weather—unless you live in warmer places like California or Florida, where you can enjoy caroling in shorts!

The Christmas season brings all kinds of tasty snacks and treats, along with plenty of parties to attend. There are beautiful Christmas lights and decorations, and perhaps most importantly, there’s Christmas vacation—no school for a week! But aside from all the festivities, what exactly is Christmas? Why do we celebrate it? Does it have something to do with Santa Claus and reindeer? Why does it happen in December? How did all of this start?

To understand Christmas, we first need to look at the word itself. The literal meaning of Christmas is “mass on Christ’s day,” with “mass” referring to people gathering together and “Christ’s Day” referring to the day that Jesus was born. At its core, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, also known as the Messiah, the Savior, and the Son of God. It is commonly accepted that Jesus was born on December 25th, which is why we celebrate on that day, although the exact date of his birth is not known for sure.

For Christians, Christmas is a holy day and a religious celebration, but for others, it is celebrated in a more secular way. Regardless of how you commemorate it, Christmas is one of the most popular holidays in the world—a day when millions of people catch up with family, take time off from work or school, and exchange gifts and well wishes.

In Germany, Christmas is known as Yule, referring to the winter solstice. It’s called Navidad in Spanish, Natali in Italian, and Noel in French, all forms of the word Nativity, meaning birth. We know that Christmas is celebrated worldwide, but where was Jesus born? His birth took place in Bethlehem, south of Jerusalem, in what is now Israel. In the nativity scene, Jesus is depicted as a small baby in a barn or stable, often lying in a manger, surrounded by his mother, the Virgin Mary, his father Joseph, an angel, and the Three Wise Men who brought gifts such as gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

While Christmas Day is December 25th, some people start their celebrations earlier in the month, on the first Sunday of December, marking the beginning of Advent. During Advent, a candle is lit on each of the Sundays leading up to Christmas, totaling four candles. There are many theories about why December 25th became known as the day Christ was born. One common theory is that it coincided with a Roman holiday celebrating the return of longer days, signaling that spring was on the way. Another theory suggests that Jesus was conceived on March 25th, leading to his birth nine months later on December 25th.

The New Testament does not mention an actual date for Jesus’s birth, and it wasn’t until around 220 AD that December 25th was designated as the day of Christ’s birth. For many years, the birth of Christ was celebrated on January 6th, known as the Epiphany. The song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” refers to the twelve days after Christmas that end on January 6th.

There are numerous symbols and traditions associated with Christmas. Some are religious, while others are more secular. Of course, Christmas would not be the same without Jesus himself. His birth is celebrated because, in Christianity, he is considered the Son of God born to save humanity. But we also have Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus, along with mistletoe, Christmas trees, wreaths, ornaments, Christmas caroling, gifts, eggnog, and twinkling lights.

Santa Claus is based on a man named St. Nicholas, who lived in Turkey in the 4th century. He was known for his kindness and generosity, giving gifts to the poor. Over time, he transformed into the jolly figure we know today. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer originated from a Christmas poem written in 1939 for a department store.

The tradition of the Christmas tree can be traced back to 16th-century Germany, where the evergreen tree symbolizes the everlasting nature of Christ. The first Christmas tree lights were candles, which posed a fire hazard! In Germany, the Christmas tree is known as Tannenbaum. Other traditions include midnight mass, where Christians celebrate the holiday by attending church, and the custom of kissing under mistletoe, which has roots in Roman traditions.

Frosty the Snowman, created in the 1950s, has become a beloved figure during the holiday season. There are countless traditions and celebrations associated with Christmas, and perhaps you have your own family traditions that will become part of the holiday spirit.

In any case, Christmas is a wonderful time of year when people around the world come together to celebrate the season. Thanks for following along and learning! Be sure to subscribe for more free resources, and check us out at Clarendon Learning.
