In this lesson, children learn about the letter W through the character Ollo and his friend, a whale. They discover that the letter W makes the “wha” sound, as exemplified by the word “whale,” and are encouraged to think of other words that start with this sound, such as “water” and “wind.” By engaging with Ollo’s fun bath time adventure, students will become more familiar with the letter W and its sound.
  1. What animal did Ollo meet in the bath?
  2. What sound does the letter W make?
  3. Can you think of another word that starts with the letter W?

Learning the Letter W with Ollo

Hey there! Today, we’re going to learn about the letter W with our friend Ollo. Ollo is having a great time during bath time, and he wants to share something fun with you!

Meet the Whale

Ollo has a special friend in the bath—a whale! Whales are big, friendly creatures that live in the ocean. But did you know that the word “whale” starts with the letter W?

The Sound of W

The letter W makes a special sound. It sounds like “wha,” just like in the word “whale.” Can you think of other words that start with the “wha” sound? Maybe words like “water” or “wind”?

Next time you see a whale or hear the “wha” sound, remember that it’s the letter W making that sound. Keep practicing, and soon you’ll be a W expert just like Ollo!

  • Can you think of any other animals or things that start with the letter W? Share your ideas and see if your friends or family can think of more!
  • Have you ever seen a whale or something else that starts with W in real life or in a picture? What was it like, and what did you notice about it?
  • Can you make up a funny story using as many W words as you can? Maybe it could be about a whale that loves to play in the water with the wind blowing!
  • Word Hunt: Go on a word hunt around your home or classroom to find objects that start with the letter W. You might find a window, a watch, or even a wall! Make a list of all the W words you discover and share them with your friends or family. Can you find at least five W words?
  • W Sound Game: Play a fun game with a friend or family member. Take turns saying words, and if the word starts with the “wha” sound, clap your hands! If it doesn’t, stay quiet. This will help you recognize the W sound in different words. How many W words can you think of?
  • Draw and Describe: Draw a picture of something that starts with the letter W, like a whale or a watermelon. Then, describe your drawing to someone using words that start with W. For example, “This is a wonderful whale swimming in the wavy water.” How many W words can you use in your description?
