Hello, friends! How are you today? Have you been to school? Did you have fun playing with your friends? It’s sunny outside, and I hope you get to enjoy the sunshine!
Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “The Lumpy Lumpy Snowman” by Megan McCaffery, with pictures by Annie Wilkinson. Let’s see what happens!
Charlie wakes up in the morning. She stretches and yawns. The sun is shining through her frosty window. “Hello, sun!” she says. It’s cold outside, but her bed is warm and cozy. Charlie thinks about all the fun she can have today. She snuggles back under her blankets.
Oh wow, did it snow last night? Maybe Charlie can play in the snow! She looks out her window and sees a snowman! It’s a lumpy lumpy snowman with big round shapes. Charlie imagines it has big black eyes, an orange carrot nose, and two brown stick arms. But who made the snowman? Was it her mom and dad? No, they don’t like playing in the snow as much as Charlie. Was it her big brother? No, he would need help. Or maybe a neighbor? No, the backyard gate is always locked.
Wait a minute! The snowman is moving! Charlie watches as it stretches. Snowmen aren’t supposed to move! Oh, silly Charlie! It wasn’t a lumpy lumpy snowman. It was her lumpy lumpy cat, Luna, sitting in the window!
“Good morning, Luna!” Charlie says with a smile.
That was “The Lumpy Lumpy Snowman.” Did you like it? You can read it again if you want. Thanks for joining us for storytime! We hope to see you again soon. Have a great day!
Bye-bye!
Snowman Craft: Let’s make our own lumpy lumpy snowman! Gather some cotton balls, buttons, sticks, and an orange piece of paper for the nose. Use glue to stick the cotton balls together to form the body of the snowman. Add buttons for eyes and a smile, and use the sticks for arms. Don’t forget the orange paper for the carrot nose! As you build your snowman, think about how Charlie felt when she saw the snowman outside her window.
Observation Game: Go outside or look out your window and see if you can spot something that looks like something else, just like Charlie thought Luna was a snowman. Maybe a cloud looks like a bunny, or a tree looks like a giant. Draw a picture of what you see and share it with your friends or family. What did you imagine it was?
Storytime Role Play: Pretend to be Charlie waking up and discovering the snowman. Act out the story with a friend or family member. One of you can be Charlie, and the other can be Luna the cat. How would you react if you thought you saw a snowman moving? What would you say to Luna?
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you doing today? Have you been to school yet? Did you have a good time? Did you get to play with your friends outside? It’s looking pretty sunny outside today. I cannot wait to go outside and get some sunshine. I hope you do too!
Today we have “The Lumpy Lumpy Snowman” by Megan McCaffery and illustrated by Annie Wilkinson. Let’s take a look!
Good morning, Charlie! Rise and shine! Charlie sits up in bed, stretches, and yawns. Charlie sees the sun peeking through the frost on her window. Hello, sun! She can tell that it’s cold outside, but it’s nice and toasty in her bed. Charlie thinks about what kind of fun she can have today. She feels comfy and cozy under all of her blankets. Charlie snuggles back down in her bed.
Oh my, did it snow while she was sleeping? Maybe Charlie can play in the snow today! Look, Charlie sees a snowman in her window! It looks like a lumpy lumpy snowman is in her backyard with round curves that get bigger and bigger. Charlie pictures a snowman with big black eyes, an orange carrot nose, and two brown stick arms. Charlie wonders who built the snowman while she was asleep. Was it her mom and dad? No, they don’t like to play in the snow as much as Charlie does. Was it a big brother? No, he would have needed some help. Or was it a neighbor? No, the backyard gate is always locked.
But wait! The snowman is moving! Charlie sees the snowman lay down to stretch. Charlie is confused. Snowmen aren’t supposed to move like that. Oh no, silly Charlie! It was not a lumpy lumpy snowman; it was her lumpy lumpy cat, Luna, sitting in her window.
Good morning, Luna!
