The Mitten – Activity for Kids

Hi there! I’m Mila.

And I’m Kai.

Today, we’re going to make some fun mittens inspired by the story “The Mitten.” These mittens can hold cute little animals, and you can make them with things you have at home!

What You Need:

  • Fabric glue
  • An old sweater
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Rhinestones
  • Pom-poms for decorating

Let’s Get Started!

Step 1:

Turn your old sweater inside out and lay it flat on the table.

Step 2:

Use a marker to trace a mitten shape around your hand. This is a great way to use an old sweater that might have stains or holes.

Step 3:

Cut out the mitten shape from both layers of the sweater.

Winter is so much fun! You can have snowball fights and go sledding. I love sledding the most!

Step 4:

Glue around the edges of your mitten, but don’t glue the bottom. That’s where the animals will go!

Step 5:

Set the mitten aside and let it dry.

While we wait for the mitten to dry, let’s talk about the animals from the story!

Step 6:

Color the animals from the book printout. I think it’s sweet that the mouse gets to stay in the middle!

Step 7:

Cut out the animals carefully.

Now, let’s make our mitten look amazing!

Step 8:

Add anything you want to your mitten! We turned our mitten inside out before starting. I’m going to glue on some pom-poms. My design idea is to make everything blue and sparkly. It’s going to look so cool!

Step 9:

Now, let’s add the animals. We’re going to have a contest to see how many animals we can fit in our mitten. One, two, three—who can fit them all first? It’s a tie!

How many animals jumped into the mitten in the book “The Mitten”? You’ll have to read the story to find out!

  • What is your favorite animal from the story “The Mitten,” and why do you like it? Can you think of any other animals that might like to jump into a mitten?
  • Have you ever made something fun out of old clothes or materials at home? What did you make, and how did you do it?
  • Winter activities like sledding and snowball fights are mentioned in the lesson. What is your favorite thing to do in winter, and why do you enjoy it?
  1. Animal Observation Walk: Take a walk in your neighborhood or a nearby park with a grown-up. Look for animals that might like to stay warm in a mitten, just like in the story. Can you find a squirrel, a bird, or maybe even a rabbit? Draw a picture of the animals you see and imagine how they would fit into your mitten.

  2. Mitten Math Challenge: Use your mitten and the animal cutouts to practice counting and simple math. How many animals can you fit into your mitten? Try adding one more animal and see how many you have now. What if you take one out? Practice adding and subtracting with your mitten animals.

  3. Story Time with a Twist: After reading “The Mitten,” create your own story about what happens when the animals leave the mitten. What do they do next? Draw a picture or write a short story with the help of a grown-up. Share your story with your family or friends!

Hi, I’m Mila.
Hi, I’m Kai.
Today we’re going to be making mittens inspired by the story “The Mitten.” These little mittens can hold cute little creatures and can be made with items you have around your house.

To create this craft, you will need: fabric glue, an old sweater, scissors, markers, rhinestones, and pom-poms for decorating.

**Step 1:** Turn the sweater inside out and lay it flat.
**Step 2:** Use a marker to trace a mitten shape around your hand. It’s a great way to use an old sweater if it has stains or holes in it.
**Step 3:** Cut out your mitten from both layers.

I love winter when you get to have snowball fights! My favorite part about winter is that I get to go sledding. I don’t think my mittens are going to be able to fit any animals; I think they’ll only fit about ten bucks.

**Step 4:** Glue around the edges of your mitten, making sure you don’t go to the bottom because this is where the animals go.
**Step 5:** Set aside and let dry.

Yeah, I’m waiting for a mitten to dry.

**Step 6:** Color the animals from the book printout. I love that the mouse gets to stay in the middle; that was really sweet.
**Step 7:** Cut out the animals.

Add anything you want! Before we started this, we turned our mitten inside out. I’m going to glue on some pom-poms. My design idea is to make everything blue and sparkly. I’m very into this!

**Step 9:** Add the animals. We are going to have a contest to see how many animals we can fit in our mitten. One, two, three—who does it first? I’m about to fit all of them!

Looks like it’s a tie! How many animals jumped into the mitten in the book “The Mitten”? They’ll have to watch to find out!
