The Party Invitation

One day, Harold hears a noise. “Dad!” he calls. Harold is invited to a costume party by his friend Donkey. But Harold is a little worried. “I won’t know anybody who’s going,” he says. “You know Donkey!” says Dad. “And everyone loves a party!”

Getting Ready for the Party

Harold decides to make a fun costume. Do you like dressing up for parties? On the day of the party, the forest is filled with all sorts of spooky costumes like monsters and skeletons. But there’s only one big eyeball costume, and that’s Harold!

The Big Birthday Cake

At the party, everyone is excited to see a giant birthday cake. Donkey wants to save it for later. “Pause for my cake!” he shouts. The party is full of games and fun. The pig wins a prize for the best dancer, and then it’s time for a game of monster tag. Suddenly, the lights go out!

The Cake is Missing!

When the lights come back on, the cake is gone! “Thief! Someone stole my cake!” cries Donkey. Harold thinks something is not right. He starts asking questions to find out who took the cake.

Finding Clues

Harold talks to the party guests. “I heard a suspicious oink,” says one. “I saw eyes glowing in the dark,” says another. Harold finds cake crumbs everywhere but can’t figure out who took the cake.

The Mystery Solved

Harold thinks hard. “Everybody loves cake,” he says. Then he realizes, “It was everyone!” Everyone had taken a tiny piece of the cake until it was all gone!

Happy Ending

Donkey feels a little sad, but then he smiles. “Who needs cake when all your friends are here to celebrate?” he says. Everyone cheers for Detective Harold. “Thank you, Donkey! This is one great party!” says Harold.

Home Sweet Home

On the way home, Harold’s dad asks, “Did you have cake?” “Nope!” says Harold. “But it was the best party ever!” And with that, Harold dreams of mysteries and cheese.

Hello! How are you? Welcome to the Story Time Family! Today, we’re going to be reading “The Mystery of the Missing Cake” by Claudia Bold.

[Applause]

Today is the perfect day for solving mysteries and enjoying some cheese! Harold, tucked up warm in bed, thinks that every day is the perfect day for solving mysteries and eating cheese. He is certainly not your average fox.

Suddenly, he hears a noise. “Dad!” calls Harold. He is invited to Donkey’s fancy dress party, but he doesn’t want to go. “I won’t know anybody who’s going,” he says. “You know Donkey!” “Besides, everyone loves a party,” says Dad. “I don’t know…”

“Well, at least I get to make a costume. Do you like costume parties?” “Don’t we all?”

It’s the day of the party, and the forest is filling up with all sorts of monsters, rotten pumpkins, and scary skeletons. But there is only one all-seeing eyeball!

[Applause]

At the party, all eyes are on the ginormous birthday cake. Everyone is eager to have a slice, but Donkey wants to save the best for last. “Pause for my cake!” shouts Donkey. The birthday Donkey gets to choose all the party games.

The party is in full swing when the pig wins the prize for the best dancer. Then it’s time for Donkey’s favorite game: monster tag. The lights go off, and the game begins. When the lights come back on, the cake is gone!

“Thief! Criminal! Robber! Crook!” cries Donkey. “Somebody stole my cake!”

“Something isn’t right,” says Harold, and he gets to work while the guests accuse each other of taking the cake. Harold questions the suspects. “This party just got a whole lot more interesting!”

“Thanks, Harold! Someone must know something.”
“I heard a suspicious oink.”
“There was a flapping sound.”
“I saw eyes glowing in the dark; it must have been a cat.”
“Why am I a suspect?”
“I saw a skeleton near the cake.”
“Look, there’s cabbage under the table!”

[Applause]

Harold searches for clues, but there are cake crumbs all over the place. “The evidence in the case of the missing cake is inconclusive,” announces Harold. “Are all the witnesses telling the truth?” he wonders.

One cake, 19 guests, one host, and just as many witnesses. Detective work isn’t easy! Donkey is very upset. “I want to know who stole my cake! As far as I could see, it could have been anyone.”

“Not me,” says Harold. “I only like cheese.”
“Everybody loves cake,” says Donkey.
“Not me.”
“Well, everybody but you loves cake,” says Donkey. “We’ll never find out.”
“Everybody loves cake,” mumbles Harold.
“Yes, exactly! Everybody loves cake!”

“That’s what I said,” cries Donkey.
“No, I mean yes! That’s it! I know who did it!”

[Applause]

“It was everyone!” Big sense, right? Harold solved the mystery! Everyone had taken a tiny piece of the cake until there was none of it left.

“I didn’t think you knew this!”
“Sorry, no, no, no! I only had one tiny piece! One little piece! It was only wafer thin!”
“I want more!”
“Sorry.”

Now everyone feels really bad, and Donkey is feeling very sorry for himself. “It was delicious!”
“Well, I had one, so I had one too!”
“I thought there would be plenty left!”
“It was almost nothing!”
“Oh dear!”

[Applause]

But Donkey never sits for long. “Who needs cake when all your friends are here to celebrate?” says Donkey. “Hip hip hooray, Detective Harold!”
“Thank you, Donkey! This is one great party!” says Harold.

On the way home, Harold’s dad wants to know all about the party. “Did you have cake?” asks Dad.
“Nope! A party without cake? That’s not a party!”
But Harold disagrees.

[Applause]

“It was the best party ever!” And with that, he falls asleep and dreams of mysteries and cheese.
