In this lesson, we explore the concept of the number six through the example of a happy family of six living together. Each family member requires six essential items, such as toothbrushes, chairs, plates, and even pieces of cake, highlighting how the number six is significant in their daily lives. By engaging with these examples, learners are encouraged to practice counting to six and recognize its importance in everyday situations.
  1. How many people live in the happy family?
  2. What do they need six of to brush their teeth?
  3. Can you think of something else that comes in six, like the pieces of cake?

Welcome to the House of Six!

Let’s imagine a big, happy family living in a cozy house. In this family, there are six people: a brother, a sister, their mom and dad, and their grandparents. That’s a lot of love under one roof!

Counting to Six

Because there are six people in the family, they need lots of things in the number six. Let’s see what they need:

Six Toothbrushes

Everyone needs to brush their teeth, so they have six toothbrushes. One for each person!

Six Chairs

When it’s time to eat, they all sit together at the table. They need six chairs so everyone has a place to sit.

Six Plates, Cups, Spoons, and Forks

For meals, they use six plates, six cups, and six spoons and forks. This way, everyone can enjoy their food together.

Six Pieces of Cake

When there’s a yummy cake, they cut it into six pieces. Each person gets a delicious slice to enjoy!

Learning the Number Six

Isn’t it fun to see how many things come in the number six? Now you know that in a house with six people, lots of things come in sixes!

Keep practicing counting to six, and you’ll be a number expert in no time!

  • Can you think of a time when you needed the same number of something as the people in your family or friends? What was it, and why did you need that number?
  • If you could add one more person to the House of Six, who would it be and why? What new things would they need to make it the House of Seven?
  • What are some other things you can think of that come in sets of six? Can you find any around your home or school?
  1. Number Six Scavenger Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around your house or classroom to find groups of six items. Look for things like six crayons, six blocks, or six books. Once you find them, count them out loud with a friend or family member. Can you find more than three sets of six?

  2. Build a Six-Person Dinner Table: Use toy dishes or draw a picture to set up a dinner table for six people. Arrange six plates, six cups, and six sets of utensils. Pretend to serve a meal and make sure everyone has what they need. What would you serve for dinner?

  3. Story Time with Six: Create a short story about a day in the life of the family of six. What activities do they do together? How do they use the number six in their day? Share your story with a friend or family member and see if they can spot all the sixes!
