Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to hear a wonderful story about a special fish. Are you ready? Let’s dive into the ocean and meet the Rainbow Fish!
In the deep blue sea, there lived a fish who was not like any other fish. He was the most beautiful fish in the whole ocean! His scales were shiny and colorful, with shades of blue, green, and purple. Some scales even sparkled like silver! Everyone called him the Rainbow Fish.
All the other fish admired the Rainbow Fish and wanted to play with him. “Come and play with us, Rainbow Fish!” they would say. But the Rainbow Fish was proud and swam past them, showing off his shimmering scales.
One day, a tiny blue fish swam up to the Rainbow Fish. “Rainbow Fish,” he said, “can I have one of your shiny scales? They are so beautiful, and you have so many!”
The Rainbow Fish was not happy. “Give you one of my special scales? No way!” he said. The little blue fish was sad and swam away to tell his friends.
After that, no one wanted to play with the Rainbow Fish. He was all alone and felt very lonely. What good were his beautiful scales if no one wanted to see them?
The Rainbow Fish talked to a starfish about his problem. “Why doesn’t anyone like me?” he asked. The starfish said, “I don’t know, but maybe the wise octopus can help you. She lives in a deep cave beyond the coral reef.”
The Rainbow Fish found the cave. It was dark, but soon he saw two eyes looking at him. It was the octopus! “I’ve been waiting for you,” she said. “Give a shiny scale to each fish. You won’t be the most beautiful fish anymore, but you’ll be happy.”
The Rainbow Fish didn’t want to give away his scales. But then, the little blue fish came back. “Please, Rainbow Fish, just one little scale,” he asked.
The Rainbow Fish thought for a moment and decided to give him one tiny scale. “Thank you!” said the little blue fish, swimming happily with his new shiny scale.
Something amazing happened! The Rainbow Fish felt happy too. Soon, other fish came, and he shared more scales with them. The more he gave, the happier he felt!
Finally, the Rainbow Fish had only one shiny scale left, but he was very happy. “Come and play with us!” the other fish called. “Here I come!” said the Rainbow Fish, and he swam off to play with his new friends.
Wasn’t that a great story? The Rainbow Fish learned that sharing makes us happy and brings us friends. Remember, sharing is caring!
Shiny Scale Sharing: Let’s create our own shiny scales! Use colorful paper, foil, or stickers to make scales. Each child can make a few scales and then share them with their friends. After sharing, discuss how it felt to give and receive scales. Ask the children, “How did sharing your scales make you feel? Did it make you happy like the Rainbow Fish?”
Friendship Circle: Sit in a circle and take turns sharing something special about yourself or something you like to do. Encourage each child to listen carefully and then say something kind or ask a question about what was shared. This activity helps children understand the joy of sharing not just things, but also thoughts and feelings. Ask them, “How does it feel when someone listens to you and shares something back?”
Ocean Adventure Walk: Go on a short walk around the school or playground. Ask the children to look for things that are shiny or colorful, like the Rainbow Fish’s scales. When you return, talk about what they found and how these things made them feel. Encourage them to think about how they can share these discoveries with others. Ask, “What did you find that was shiny or colorful? How can you share your discovery with a friend?”

Hello! Welcome to Storyline Online, brought to you by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. My name is Ernest Borgnine, and today we will be reading a book called “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister.
A long way out in the deep blue sea, there lived a fish—not just an ordinary fish, but the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean. His scales were every shade of blue, green, and purple, with sparkling silver scales among them. The other fish were amazed at his beauty and called him Rainbow Fish.
“Come on, Rainbow Fish,” they would call. “Come and play with us!” But the Rainbow Fish would glide past, proud and silent, letting his scales shimmer.
One day, a little blue fish followed after him. “Rainbow Fish,” he called, “Wait for me! Please give me one of your shiny scales. They are so wonderful, and you have so many.”
“You want me to give you one of my special scales? Who do you think you are?” cried the Rainbow Fish. “Get away from me!”
Shocked, the little blue fish swam away, upset, and told all his friends what had happened. From then on, no one wanted to play with the Rainbow Fish. They turned away when he swam by. What good were the dazzling scales with no one to admire them? Now he was the loneliest fish in the ocean.
One day, he poured out his troubles to a starfish. “I really am beautiful; why doesn’t anybody like me?”
“I can’t answer that for you,” said the starfish. “But if you go beyond the coral reef to a deep cave, you will find the wise octopus. Maybe she can help you.”
The Rainbow Fish found the cave. It was dark inside, and he couldn’t see anything. Suddenly, two eyes caught him in their glare, and the octopus emerged from the darkness.
“I have been waiting for you,” said the octopus with a deep voice. “The waves have told me your story. This is my advice: Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish. You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy.”
The Rainbow Fish started to protest, but the octopus had already disappeared into a cloud of ink.
Give away my scales? My beautiful, shining scales? Never. How could I ever be happy without them?
Suddenly, he felt a light touch of a fin. The little blue fish was back! “Rainbow Fish, please, don’t be angry. I just want one little scale.”
The Rainbow Fish wavered. Only one very small shimmery scale, he thought. Well, maybe I wouldn’t miss just one. Carefully, the Rainbow Fish pulled out the smallest scale and gave it to the little fish.
“Oh, thank you! Thank you very much!” the little blue fish bubbled playfully as he tucked the shiny scale among his blue ones.
A peculiar feeling came over the Rainbow Fish. For a long time, he watched the little blue fish swim back and forth with his new scale glittering in the water. The little blue fish whizzed through the ocean with his scale flashing, and soon the Rainbow Fish was surrounded by other fish. Everyone wanted a glittering scale.
The Rainbow Fish shared his scales left and right, and the more he gave away, the more delighted he became. When the water around him filled with glimmering scales, he finally felt at home among the other fish.
Finally, the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left. His most prized possessions had been given away, and yet he was very happy.
“Come on, Rainbow Fish,” they called. “Come and play with us!”
“Here I come!” said the Rainbow Fish, and happy as a splash, he swam off to join his friends.
That was “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister.
