The Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful and famous buildings in India. It’s located near the city of Agra and is known for its amazing design and the love story behind its creation. Every year, millions of people visit the Taj Mahal to see its stunning architecture and learn about its history.
The name “Taj Mahal” means “Crown of Palaces” in Persian. It was built over 350 years ago by Emperor Shah Jahan to honor his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who had passed away. Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal met when they were teenagers and got married five years later in 1612. They had a happy marriage and shared a strong bond, having fourteen children together.
Sadly, Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 while giving birth. Shah Jahan was heartbroken and decided to build a grand mausoleum in her memory on the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra.
The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632. It took a huge team of over 20,000 workers and more than 1,000 elephants to transport the materials. The design of the Taj Mahal is a mix of Persian, Islamic, and Indian styles. It is made of large white marble slabs and decorated with precious stones and beautiful patterns. Poems are also written on the walls in fancy writing.
The main tomb took about 12 years to finish, but the entire complex, including gardens, pathways, pools, minarets, a mosque, and a grand entrance, took another ten years. In total, it took 22 years to complete and cost a lot of money, which would be around $827 million today.
There is a story that Shah Jahan wanted to build another Taj Mahal out of black marble for himself on the other side of the river. However, this plan was never completed because his son took over his throne. In the end, Shah Jahan was buried next to Mumtaz Mahal in the Taj Mahal. The tombs you see are just for show; their real resting places are underneath.
Over the years, the Taj Mahal has been called “poetry in stone” and “a teardrop on the cheek of time.” It is a World Heritage Site and is celebrated as a masterpiece of Muslim art in India. Today, the Taj Mahal is a symbol of India and is known all over the world. It represents a love story that has lasted through time.
