Hello, friends! I’m so happy you’re here for Story Time. Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “The Tortoise and the Hare.” It’s a special kind of story called a fable, which means it teaches us a lesson. Are you ready to listen and learn? Let’s get started!
In this story, we have two main characters: a tortoise and a hare. A tortoise is a slow-moving animal with a big shell, and a hare is a fast, jumpy animal like a rabbit. Let’s see what happens when they decide to have a race!
One day, the hare was feeling very proud and said, “I’m the fastest runner ever!” He laughed at the tortoise for being so slow. But guess what? The tortoise said, “Let’s have a race and see who wins!” The hare thought this was funny and said, “Okay, let’s race!”
The tortoise and the hare asked their friend the fox to help start the race. When the race began, the hare ran super fast and was soon far ahead of the tortoise. The hare was so fast that he decided to take a nap under a tree because he thought he could still win easily.
While the hare was sleeping, the tortoise kept walking slowly but surely. He didn’t stop to rest or play. He just kept going toward the finish line. The hare slept longer than he planned, and when he woke up, he couldn’t see the tortoise anywhere!
The hare ran as fast as he could to the finish line, but when he got there, the tortoise was already waiting for him! The tortoise won the race because he kept going and didn’t give up. Wow, what a surprise!
The story teaches us that “Slow and steady wins the race.” This means if we keep trying and don’t give up, we can do great things, just like the tortoise. So remember, if you practice something every day, like reading, you can become really good at it!
Would you like to hear the story again? We can read it as many times as you want. It’s fun to listen to the words and look at the pictures. Thanks for joining me for Story Time. See you next time for another fun story. Bye-bye!
Animal Race Game: Gather your friends and have your own race! Choose different animals to pretend to be, like a tortoise, a hare, or even a fox. Take turns being the starter of the race. Remember, the goal is not just to be the fastest but to keep going without giving up. After the race, talk about how it felt to be slow and steady like the tortoise or fast like the hare.
Story Drawing: Draw a picture of your favorite part of “The Tortoise and the Hare” story. Was it when the hare took a nap, or when the tortoise crossed the finish line? Share your drawing with your family or friends and explain why you chose that part. This helps you remember the lesson of the story and express your creativity!
Daily Practice Chart: Create a chart with your family to practice something new every day, like reading or drawing. Just like the tortoise, mark each day you practice on the chart. At the end of the week, see how much you’ve improved! Discuss how practicing a little bit every day can help you get better at something, just like the tortoise won the race by not giving up.
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hi, I’m Miracle, and welcome to Story Time! This is our special time to share a story together. Yay! We are going to share the story from this book, “The Tortoise and the Hare.” It is an Aesop’s Fable, a story told long ago by a man named Aesop. He had just one name, Aesop, just like some people have one name. That’s right! This story has great characters: a tortoise, who is here on the cover, and a hare, which is a type of rabbit.
Now, get your ears ready to listen, your eyes ready to look, and your brain ready to wonder. Ready? Let’s read “The Tortoise and the Hare.”

Hey, there’s a special message before the story! Let’s read it and see what the author has to tell us. Aesop’s Fables—what are Aesop’s Fables? Legend tells us that Aesop lived a very long time ago in a place called Greece and became famous for telling stories that were intended to teach lessons about life. We call his stories Aesop’s Fables.
Oh, so this story is a fable! What’s a fable again? That’s a story that teaches a lesson.
Oh, the Tortoise and the Hare! One day, a hare was bragging about how fast he could run and laughing at a tortoise for being so slow. Look at that hare! I can tell he’s bragging and saying, “I’m so fast! I’m the best!” Much to the hare’s surprise, the tortoise challenged the hare to a race. Thinking this was very funny, the hare accepted the challenge.

The Tortoise and the Hare asked their friend the fox to judge the race. The race began, and of course, the hare was soon far ahead of the tortoise. Wow, the hare is really fast! Uh-huh! Soon, the hare reached the halfway point in the race. Because it was a beautiful sunny day, the hare decided to stop running and play for a while. He then took a nap in a shady spot. “Even if the tortoise passes me while I sleep,” thought the hare, “I can easily catch up and reach the finish line first.”
The hare is taking a nap in the middle of a race! Look, here comes the tortoise! What do you think will happen while the hare is napping?
The tortoise, meanwhile, kept walking along slowly and steadily toward the finish line. He couldn’t run nearly as fast as the hare, but he never stopped to rest or play. While the tortoise continued on, the hare lost track of time and slept longer than he had intended. When the hare woke up, he was surprised that the tortoise was nowhere in sight.
I see the tortoise on this page! He is at the top of the hill. See him? Then he is gone! I think he walked over the hill and passed the hare. The hare jumped up and ran off at full speed. Wow, the hare is working really hard to catch up! I wonder if he’ll win the race. What do you think?
It looks like a lot of you think he will, but when the hare reached the finish line, he found that the tortoise was already there waiting for him. Although the tortoise was much slower than the hare, because the tortoise did not stop to rest, he won the race.
The end! The tortoise won the race, and he even had time to get a cold drink. Did you think that was going to happen? No? It was a surprise!
What’s this? There’s a special message on the last page: “Moral of the story: Slow and steady wins the race.” So the lesson is, if we keep working hard, slow and steady like the tortoise, we can win at anything! That makes me think about reading. If we practice every single day, we can win by becoming fantastic readers!
Yep, yep, yep! Yay! Now, would you like to hear the story one more time? Again? Let’s do it! This time, I’m going to read it straight through without stopping. You can listen to the words and look at the characters in the illustrations.
