The Amazing Letter I

(bright gentle music) (raccoon giggling) – Let’s talk about the letter I! It’s a vowel, which means it can make different sounds. Isn’t that cool?

Short I Sound

The letter I can make a short sound, like in the word “insect.” Insects are some of my favorite things!

Long I Sound

But that’s not all! The letter I can also make a long sound, like in the word “ice cream.” Imagine an insect eating an ice cream. How funny is that?

So, remember, the letter I is special because it can sound different in words. Keep listening for those sounds when you read or talk!

  • Have you ever noticed how some words can sound different even though they have the same letter? Why do you think the letter I can sound different in different words?
  • Imagine you are an insect eating ice cream. What flavor would you choose and why? How do you think it would feel to be an insect enjoying a treat?
  1. Sound Hunt: Go on a sound hunt around your home or classroom. Find objects or pictures that have the short I sound, like “insect,” and the long I sound, like “ice cream.” Make a list or draw pictures of what you find.
