In today’s storytime, we read “Dr. Thumb,” about a little kitten who loves to suck her thumb, much to her mother’s concern. Despite trying various methods to help her stop, Mother Cat learns from Granny Pig that sometimes it’s best to let things resolve naturally, leading to a happy ending when the kitten eventually stops on her own. The lesson emphasizes that some problems may resolve themselves with time and patience.
  1. Why did the little kitten like to suck her thumb?
  2. What did Mother Cat do to try and help her kitten?
  3. What did Granny Pig say that helped Mother Cat feel better?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “Dr. Thumb.” It’s about a little kitten who loves to suck her thumb. Let’s find out what happens!

The Thumb-Sucking Kitten

Once upon a time, there was a cute little kitten. She loved to suck her thumb! She did it in the morning, during playtime, at naptime, and even when she went to sleep at night.

One day, Mother Cat asked her, “Why do you suck your thumb?” The kitten replied, “Because my thumb just goes right into my mouth!”

Mother Cat’s Worry

Mother Cat was worried. She tried many things to help her kitten stop sucking her thumb, like putting mittens on her paws, but nothing worked.

Asking for Help

Mother Cat decided to ask her friends for help. First, she went to Mrs. Dog’s house. “Can you help me?” she asked. But Mrs. Dog’s idea didn’t work.

Then, she visited Mrs. Cow, Mrs. Horse, Mrs. Sheep, Mrs. Hen, and Mrs. Duck. They all had ideas, but none of them helped the kitten stop sucking her thumb.

Granny Pig’s Advice

Finally, Mother Cat went to see Old Granny Pig. “Can you help me?” she asked. Granny Pig said, “Just leave her alone. She’ll stop when she’s ready.”

Mother Cat thought about this and decided to listen to Granny Pig’s advice.

The Happy Ending

Mother Cat stopped worrying and spent her time playing and loving her kitten. One day, the kitten just stopped sucking her thumb all by herself!

“Wow, sometimes problems solve themselves!” said Ryan. And everyone was happy.

Thank You for Joining Storytime!

Thank you for listening to our story today. We hope you enjoyed it! Remember, sometimes things get better all on their own. See you next time!

  • Why do you think the little kitten liked to suck her thumb so much? Have you ever had a habit that you found hard to stop?
  • Mother Cat tried many different ways to help her kitten stop sucking her thumb. Can you think of a time when you tried to help someone with a problem? What did you do?
  • Granny Pig suggested that the kitten would stop sucking her thumb when she was ready. Can you think of something you learned to do when you were ready, like riding a bike or tying your shoes?
  1. Thumb-Sucking Experiment: Let’s try a fun experiment! Ask the children to pretend they are the kitten and try to keep their thumb out of their mouth for a short period, like during a song or a game. Afterward, discuss how it felt and what they did to keep their thumb out. This will help them understand self-control and how habits can be changed over time.

  2. Animal Advice Role-Play: Have the children role-play as different animals giving advice to the kitten. Encourage them to think of creative and kind ways to help the kitten stop sucking her thumb. This activity will help them practice empathy and problem-solving skills.

  3. Observation Walk: Take the children on a short walk around the classroom or playground. Ask them to observe and share any habits or routines they notice in their friends or themselves, like how they line up or how they play. Discuss how some habits are helpful and how others might change over time, just like the kitten’s thumb-sucking habit.

Hello, I’m Craig Tobey, and welcome to Storytime with Ryan Crypto. Today’s special guest reader is… Today’s book is “Dr. Thumb” by Marielle Tufts, illustrated by Lucinda McQueen. Let’s get started!

Once there was a kitten who would suck her thumb. She sucked her thumb early in the morning when she first woke up, at playtime, at naptime, and at night when she was sleeping.

“Oh, I used to suck my thumb,” someone said. “Good thing we grew out of it!”

Mother Cat asked the kitten one morning, “Why do you suck your thumb?”

“Because my thumb runs right into my mouth,” the kitten answered.

This worried Mother Cat greatly. She had tried many ways to help her kitten stop this habit, but nothing seemed to work.

She thought of the usual remedies: bitter substances, mittens, and restraints, but none seemed effective.

So, Mother Cat decided to seek advice from her friends. Taking the kitten by the hand, she left her small house and crossed through the hedge to Mrs. Dog’s house next door.

“Meow,” said Mrs. Cat. “Mrs. Dog, can you tell me how to keep my kitten from sucking her thumb?”

“Bark! I know exactly what to do,” said Mrs. Dog.

“But I’ve tried that, and it hasn’t worked,” replied Mrs. Cat. “Thank you anyway.”

Next, they visited Mrs. Cow.

“Meow,” said Mrs. Cat. “Can you tell me how to keep my kitten from sucking her thumb?”

“Moo! I know exactly what to do,” answered Mrs. Cow.

“But I thought of that, and it didn’t work,” said Mrs. Cat. “Come along, kitten, let’s visit Mrs. Horse.”

“Meow,” said Mrs. Cat. “Mrs. Horse, can you tell me how to keep my kitten from sucking her thumb?”

“Yes, I know exactly what to do,” said Mrs. Horse.

“But I thought of that too, and it won’t work,” replied Mrs. Cat. “Let’s go see Mrs. Sheep.”

“Meow,” said Mrs. Cat. “Can you tell me how to keep my kitten from sucking her thumb?”

“Baa! I know exactly what to do,” said Mrs. Sheep.

“But I’ve already tried that,” sighed Mrs. Cat. “Let’s visit Mrs. Hen.”

“Meow,” said Mrs. Cat. “Can you tell me how to keep my kitten from sucking her thumb?”

“Cluck! I know exactly what to do,” said Mrs. Hen.

“But I could never do that,” replied Mrs. Cat. “Let’s see what Mrs. Duck has to say.”

“Meow,” said Mrs. Cat. “Can you tell me how to keep my kitten from sucking her thumb?”

“Quack! I know exactly what to do,” said Mrs. Duck.

“But I thought you would know better,” said Mrs. Cat. “Let’s visit Old Granny Pig.”

“Meow,” said Mrs. Cat. “Can you tell me how to keep my kitten from sucking her thumb?”

“I know exactly what to do,” said Granny Pig.

“Leave her alone,” she advised. “She’ll stop sucking her thumb all by herself sooner or later.”

“Good, good,” said Mrs. Cat. “It can’t be that simple, can it?”

Later that day, Mrs. Cat reflected on all the visits she had made and the advice she had received.

She realized that Granny Pig was right. Her kitten would stop sucking her thumb all by herself sooner or later.

From that day on, Mother Cat did not waste another minute worrying about whether her kitten was sucking her thumb. Instead, she busied herself with all the things that mother cats do, loving her kitten all the while.

Until one day, the kitten no longer wanted to suck her thumb. No one was sure how it had happened or when she had stopped, but the fact was that the kitten just didn’t want to anymore.

“Wow, it looks like some problems just solve themselves!” said Ryan.

“That’s great!”
