Understanding the Word “For”

The word “for” is spelled F-O-R. It’s a small word, but it’s very important because it helps us show who or what something is meant for.

How to Use “For”

We use “for” when we want to say that something is given to someone or something. For example, if Cody made a card, we can say he made it “for” Allo. This means the card is meant to be given to Allo.

So, whenever you want to show that something is intended for a person or a thing, you can use the word “for.” It’s a simple way to make your sentences clear and easy to understand!

  • Can you think of a time when you made something for someone else? What was it, and how did it make you feel to give it to them?
  • Have you ever received something that was made just for you? How did you know it was meant for you, and how did it make you feel?
  • Look around your classroom or home. Can you find something that is meant for a specific person or purpose? How do you know it is meant for that person or purpose?
  • Activity 1: Create a Gift

Think of someone special in your life, like a family member or a friend. Make a small gift or draw a picture for them. Once you’re done, write a sentence using the word “for” to describe who the gift is meant for. For example, “This picture is for my mom.” Share your creation and sentence with the class.

  • Activity 2: “For” Hunt

Go on a “for” hunt around your home or classroom. Look for items that are meant for specific people or purposes. For example, a toothbrush is for brushing teeth, or a book is for reading. Write down or draw at least three things you find and explain who or what each item is for.

  • Question: Who is it for?

Think about your favorite toy or game. Who is it for? Is it for you, or do you share it with someone else? Write a short sentence using the word “for” to explain who the toy or game is meant for. Discuss with a partner how using the word “for” helps make your sentence clear.
