In today’s Storytime lesson, we explored the story “Theo’s Mood,” where Theo shares his mixed feelings about becoming a big brother. Through interactions with his classmates, he learns that it’s normal to experience a range of emotions simultaneously, such as happiness, jealousy, fear, sadness, and pride. The lesson emphasizes the importance of recognizing and understanding our feelings, reminding us that it’s okay to feel multiple emotions at once.
  1. How do you think Theo feels about having a new baby sister?
  2. Can you think of a time when you felt more than one feeling at the same time?
  3. What makes you feel happy, just like Theo feels proud?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! How are you feeling today? Are you happy, sleepy, or maybe a little confused? Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “Theo’s Mood.” Let’s find out what kind of mood Theo is in!

Meet Theo

It’s Mood Monday, and Theo is ready to share how he feels with his class. His teacher, Miss Katie, asks him, “Are you in a good mood or a bad mood?” But Theo isn’t sure.

Big News for Theo

Miss Katie asks if anything special happened over the weekend. Theo tells everyone, “My mother had a baby girl!” Everyone cheers because Theo has a new baby sister. Miss Katie thinks that’s happy news, but Theo still isn’t sure how he feels.

Different Feelings

Theo’s friends try to help him figure it out:

  • Eric says, “Maybe you’re happy like me. I got a new bike!”
  • Lily says, “Maybe you’re jealous like me. My sister won another trophy.”
  • Another friend says, “Maybe you’re afraid like me. I got lost in a mall.”
  • April says, “Maybe you’re sad like me. My dog ran away.”
  • Molly says, “Maybe you’re mad like me. My brother ripped my favorite book.”
  • Sam says, “Maybe you’re proud like me. I hit a home run.”

How Does Theo Feel?

Theo thinks and thinks. Then he says, “I feel happy because my grandma is staying for a whole week. But I also feel jealous because Mommy has no time to play with me. I feel afraid because I don’t want to drop the baby. I feel sad because I’m not my daddy’s one and only. I feel mad because I can’t play my drum when the baby’s sleeping. But most of all, I feel proud because I have a new baby sister.”

Being a Big Brother

The other kids ask, “How can you feel all those things at the same time?” Theo smiles and says, “Because I feel like a big brother.”

What About You?

What kind of mood are you in now? Sometimes we have many feelings at once, and that’s okay! It’s all part of being you.

Thanks for Joining!

  • Can you think of a time when you felt more than one feeling at the same time, like Theo? What were those feelings, and what happened to make you feel that way?
  • Theo’s friends shared different feelings they had. Which friend do you relate to the most, and why? Have you ever felt happy, jealous, afraid, sad, mad, or proud like them?
  • Imagine you are Theo’s friend. What advice would you give him to help him understand his feelings better? How do you usually make yourself feel better when you have mixed emotions?
  1. Feelings Collage: Gather some old magazines, newspapers, or printed images. Ask the children to cut out pictures that represent different emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, and pride. Provide them with a large sheet of paper and glue to create a “Feelings Collage.” Encourage them to share their collage with the class and explain why they chose each picture. This activity helps children recognize and express different emotions visually.

  2. Mood Matching Game: Create a set of cards with different facial expressions and another set with emotion words (like happy, sad, angry, etc.). Mix them up and ask the children to match the facial expressions with the correct emotion words. This game helps children associate facial expressions with feelings, enhancing their emotional intelligence.

  3. Feelings Journal: Provide each child with a small notebook to create their own “Feelings Journal.” Encourage them to draw or write about how they feel each day. Ask them to include what made them feel that way and if they experienced more than one feeling at the same time, just like Theo. This activity encourages self-reflection and helps children understand that it’s normal to have multiple emotions simultaneously.

It was Mood Monday, and Theo was the first to share his mood news.

“Are you in a good mood or a bad mood?” asked Miss Katie.

“I don’t know,” said Theo.

“Well, did anything happen this weekend?” asked Miss Katie.

“My mother had a baby girl,” said Theo.

Everyone cheered. “Theo has a new sister! That’s good mood news, right?” Isn’t it? asked Miss Katie.

“How does it feel to have a new sister?”

“I don’t know,” said Theo.

“Maybe you feel happy like me,” said Eric. “I got a new bike.”

“Maybe you feel jealous like me,” said Lily. “My sister won another trophy.”

“Maybe you feel afraid like me,” he said. “I got lost in a mall.”

“Maybe you feel sad like me,” said April. “My dog ran away.”

“Maybe you feel mad like me,” said Molly. “My brother ripped my favorite book.”

“Maybe you feel proud like me,” said Sam. “I hit a home run.”

Well, Theo, the class asked, “How do you feel?”

Theo sat and thought and thought. Finally, he said, “I feel happy! My grandma is staying for a whole week. But I also feel jealous; Mommy has no time to play with me. And I feel afraid; I don’t want to drop the baby. And I feel sad; I’m not my daddy’s one and only. And I feel mad; I can’t play my drum when the baby’s sleeping. But most of all, I feel proud; I have a new baby sister.”

“But how can you feel all those things at the same time?” asked the kids.

“Because,” said Theo, “I feel like a big brother.”

And that was Theo’s mood.
