In the “Welcome to Storytime!” lesson, children are introduced to the joys of reading through two delightful books, “This is Baby” by Jimmy Fallon and “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days” by Lindsay Keller Matson. The lesson emphasizes the importance of family love and connection, highlighting the various parts of a baby and the busy, joyful experiences that come with caring for them. Ultimately, it encourages children to appreciate their families and share affection with their parents.
  1. What parts of a baby did we learn about in the story?
  2. Why do you think babies are special?
  3. How can we show love to our family like the story says?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! How are you today? Is it sunny where you are? It’s sunny here, and we love playing outside in the sunshine! If it’s cold where you are, I hope you’re staying warm and reading lots of fun books.

Let’s Read “This is Baby” by Jimmy Fallon

Are you ready for a story? Let’s read “This is Baby” by Jimmy Fallon. It’s a fun book about all the parts of a baby!

Meet Baby!

This is baby. Let’s laugh, play, and sing! Do you know the parts of a baby? Let’s find out!

These are baby’s eyes, and this is baby’s nose. These are baby’s fingers, and these are baby’s toes. This is your head, this is your hair, and this is a hat you can wear.

These are baby’s ears, these are baby’s lips, these are baby’s knees, and these are baby’s hips. This is baby’s tummy, and if tickling is a problem, just turn baby over, and this is baby’s bottom.

These are baby’s elbows, and these are baby’s shoulders shrugging. These are baby’s arms that are made for super hugging. There are so many parts of baby, but the biggest part is the love you get from me!

Wasn’t that a cute book? Babies are so special, and they grow up so fast! Make sure to give your mommies and daddies lots of love and hugs because they love you so much!

Another Fun Book: “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days”

Let’s look at another book called “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days” by Lindsay Keller Matson and Mefrey Vanguard. It’s all about the fun and busy days with babies!

Busy Baby Days

Babies, babies everywhere, on the floor and in my hair. We play and play every day, and sometimes night feels like day!

There are diapers to change and burps to hear, but oh my, aren’t babies dear? Crawling, climbing, eating dirt, and washing clothes—what’s one more shirt?

Even when things get messy, a baby’s smile makes everything better. Feeding time, nap time, and lots of love make baby days so special.

Even when days are long and nights are short, remember, you’re not alone. All mommies and daddies have busy baby days, and they are all worth it in the end!

Thank you for reading with us today! We hope you enjoyed the stories. Remember to give lots of hugs and love to your family. Bye-bye!

  1. What is your favorite part of the story about the baby? Can you think of a time when you helped take care of a baby or a younger sibling?
  2. Babies have many different parts like eyes, nose, and fingers. Can you name some parts of your body and what you like to do with them?
  3. In the story, babies are described as being busy and sometimes messy. Can you share a funny or special memory you have with a baby or a pet?
  1. Body Parts Matching Game: Let’s play a fun game to learn about different parts of the body! Cut out pictures of different body parts from magazines or draw them on paper. Mix them up and try to match each part to the correct place on a large outline of a baby. Can you name each part as you place it? This will help you remember all the parts of a baby, just like in the story!

  2. Observation Walk: Take a walk with a grown-up and look around for babies or young children. What are they doing? Are they crawling, walking, or playing? Talk about the different parts of their bodies that help them do these activities. For example, “Look, that baby is using their legs to walk!” This will help you see how important each part of the body is in everyday life.

  3. Family Hug Time: Just like the story says, hugs are special! Have a family hug time where everyone gives each other big hugs. Talk about how hugs make you feel and why they are important. You can even count how many hugs you can give in one minute! This activity will help you understand the love and connection that family brings, just like in the book.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Well, it’s time to get going on a reading today! Today we have “This is Baby” by Jimmy Fallon. Are we ready? Well then, let’s get started!

This is baby. This is baby. Let’s laugh and play and sing! What are the parts of a baby? Well, I’ll tell you everything.

These are baby’s eyes, and this is baby’s nose. These are baby’s fingers, and these are baby’s toes. This is your head, this is your hair, this is a hat that you put on there. These are baby’s ears, these are baby’s lips, these are baby’s knees, these are baby’s hips. This is baby’s tummy, and if tickling is a problem, just turn baby over, and this is baby’s bottom.

These are baby’s elbows, these are a baby’s shoulders shrugging. These are baby’s arms that are made for super hugging. There are so many parts of baby; these are just the things we see. But the biggest part of baby is the love you get from me.

Wasn’t that the cutest book? I miss my boys when they were babies. Sometimes I wish I could turn back time and just hold them all day long. Well, time flies, and kids grow up so fast, so be sure to give your mommies and daddies all the love and hugs you can, because they never get old, and they love you so, so much. How lucky are we?

Let’s have a look!

Babies, babies everywhere on the floor and in my hair. Our rhythm beats the baby way; most every night blurs into day. Blowouts, burping, high-pitched squealing, diapers mounding to the ceiling. Crawling, climbing, eating dirt, loads to wash—what’s one more shirt?

Drooling, spit-up, pureed fruit, but oh my goodness, aren’t you cute? Tummy time makes you so sad, and I need rest; I haven’t had. I might have maybe lost my mind; it’s not an easy thing to find.

I’m overwhelmed; my world’s a mess. How does your smile erase my stress? Bottle, breast, or baby-led—all I care is that you’re fed. The swaddle snug, white noise is on; you might just nap with one more song.

Walking, rocking, midnight drives; I’m desperate to see drowsy eyes. Perhaps it’s gas or maybe teething; our four feet sleep to watch you breathing. The fridge is empty; lunch looks bleak. I haven’t showered yet this week.

With yoga pants and dry shampoo, we’re off to brave the shopping zoo. The house is so full of baby stuff, yet somehow there’s not enough. The stroller won’t fit through the gate; you woke at five—how are we late?

Strangers acting nonchalant give advice and never want. So much mess, so many tears, the longest days, the shortest years. With sleepless nights and baby blues, thank goodness they are mamas too.

If babies small or fully grown, in motherhood, you’re not alone. I remember my baby days; those days were really rough, but they all pass, and it makes it all worthwhile in the end, right, mamas?

And that was “The Lovely Haze of Baby Days.” That brought back a lot of memories for me. If you’d like a copy of this book, the links are in the description below.
