In today’s Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie, children engage in fun activities focused on cleanliness and health. They sing along with Caitie from Super Simple Songs, learn proper handwashing techniques, enjoy a story about problem-solving, and practice spelling and sentence-making related to the story. The lesson emphasizes the importance of staying clean and healthy, encouraging kids to share their own handwashing practices with family and friends.
  1. What are some ways we can keep our hands clean?
  2. Why is it important to wash our hands before eating?
  3. Can you think of a fun way to remember how to wash your hands?

Circle Time Fun with Caroline and Sophie

Hello, friends! Today, we’re joining Caroline and her friend Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids team for a fun circle time. Circle time is a special part of the day where we can all connect, even if we’re in different places. Let’s see what exciting things they have planned for us!

Sing Along with Caitie

We have a special guest today—Caitie from Super Simple Songs and Caitie’s Classroom! She’s here to sing a song with us. Do you know the song “This is The Way”? It’s all about staying clean and healthy. Let’s sing together and learn how to keep ourselves clean!

Here are some things we can do:

  • Wash our hands: Rub your hands with soap and scrub them well.
  • Take a bath: Wash your hair, arms, legs, and don’t forget your feet!
  • Brush our teeth: Brush them well to keep them clean and healthy.
  • Cover our cough: If you need to cough or sneeze, do it into your elbow to keep others healthy.

Now, let’s sing “This is the Way” with Caitie and her guitar!

Learning About Cleanliness

After singing, Caroline and Sophie talk about the importance of staying clean. They remind us to wash our hands, especially before eating, after using the bathroom, and when we come back inside from playing. It’s important to wash with soap for 20 seconds to make sure our hands are really clean.

Show and Tell: How to Wash Your Hands

Our friends, teacher Crystal and Nev, show us how to wash our hands properly. They use fun techniques like “butterfly” to clean between fingers and “pet the dog” to clean the tops of hands and wrists. You can try these at home too!

Story Time: “Gum on the Rug”

Caroline reads a story called “Gum on the Rug.” In the story, Kodi and friends try to get gum out of a rug. They rub and rub, but the gum won’t come out. Finally, they decide to put the rug in the tub and get clean themselves too!

Fun Activities

After the story, we learn how to spell the word “gum” and make sentences like “rub the gum.” It’s a fun way to practice spelling and sentence-making!

Goodbye and Stay Healthy

Before saying goodbye, Caroline and Sophie remind us to think about how we wash our hands and stay healthy. Maybe you can make a video with your family to show others how you do it. We’d love to hear your ideas!

Goodbye for now, and have a wonderful day! From Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team.

  • What are some fun ways you like to stay clean and healthy, just like in the song “This is The Way”? Can you think of any other songs or games that help you remember to wash your hands or brush your teeth?
  • Have you ever tried using fun techniques like “butterfly” or “pet the dog” when washing your hands? What other creative ways can you think of to make handwashing more fun?
  • In the story “Gum on the Rug,” Kodi and friends had to find a way to clean up a sticky mess. Have you ever had to clean up a big mess? How did you do it, and what did you learn from the experience?
  1. Handwashing Experiment: Try a fun experiment to see how germs can spread and why washing hands is important. Use glitter as pretend germs. Put some lotion on your hands and sprinkle glitter on them. Now, touch different objects like a toy or a book. See how the glitter spreads? Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds and see how much glitter comes off. Talk about why it’s important to wash hands properly to remove germs.

  2. Cleanliness Chart: Create a cleanliness chart at home. Draw pictures or use stickers to show when you wash your hands, brush your teeth, or take a bath. Each time you do one of these activities, add a sticker or draw a smiley face on your chart. At the end of the week, count how many times you did each activity and talk about why it’s important to keep doing them.

  3. Story Time Reflection: Think about the story “Gum on the Rug.” What did Kodi and friends learn about cleaning? Draw a picture of your favorite part of the story and write a sentence about what you learned. Share your drawing and sentence with a family member or friend and talk about why keeping things clean is important.
