Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! How are you feeling today? Is the sun shining where you are? Have you had a chance to play outside yet?

Thank you for joining us to read a fun story. Today, we’re going to enjoy “This Little Piggy Went to Market” by Tara Lawlor, with pictures by Rich Greco. It’s a silly story about little piggies going to the market. Let’s see what happens!

This Little Piggy’s Adventure

Once upon a time, there was a little piggy who went to the market in the big city. He was so excited to go shopping! But another little piggy stayed home because she always forgets about the market.

One little piggy made it all the way to the market, but when he saw so many people, he felt a bit shy. So, he decided to get a yummy coffee and a tasty almond croissant instead. Doesn’t that sound delicious?

Another little piggy wanted to buy some special cheese called Gruyère, but she wasn’t sure how to say it. So, she got cheddar cheese instead. Have you ever felt unsure about something like that?

One piggy forgot her special shopping bag and felt a bit sad. Have you ever forgotten something important when you went out?

More Silly Piggies

Another little piggy went to the market to talk to people about voting. He was very excited to help his community!

One piggy was learning about composting, which is a fun way to help plants grow by using food scraps. Do you know what composting is?

Another piggy chatted with the fish seller and decided to have fish for dinner, breakfast, and lunch! I wonder if you like fish too.

One piggy had roast beef and was trying to pick a special mustard to go with it. Another piggy was curious if the roast beef was good for a special diet.

Happy Endings

One little piggy didn’t buy anything but got some pretty flowers just for himself. Flowers can make us feel happy!

Another piggy was hiding because she didn’t want to talk to someone she knew. Sometimes we all feel a little shy.

Finally, all the little piggies went “wee wee wee” all the way home. They had such a fun day!

  • What was your favorite part of the story about the little piggies, and why did you like it?
  • Have you ever felt shy like the piggy at the market? What do you do when you feel that way?
  • If you were one of the piggies going to the market, what would you like to buy and why?
  1. Market Adventure Role Play: Gather some toy food items or pictures of groceries and set up a pretend market in your classroom or home. Let the children take turns being the little piggies going to the market. Encourage them to choose items, ask questions, and even practice saying tricky words like “Gruyère.” This will help them build confidence in speaking and making choices.

  2. Memory Game: Create a simple memory game using cards with pictures of items mentioned in the story, like coffee, croissants, cheese, and flowers. Lay the cards face down and let the children take turns flipping them over to find matching pairs. This activity will help improve their memory and recall skills while reinforcing the story elements.

  3. Composting Exploration: Introduce the concept of composting by showing the children a small compost bin or a picture of one. Discuss what items can be composted and why it’s important for the environment. Encourage them to observe food scraps at home and think about how they can help plants grow. This will foster an understanding of sustainability and environmental care.

[Music] Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you feeling today? Is it sunny where you are? Have you gone to play outside yet?

Thank you for sitting down to read with us. Today we have “This Little Piggy Went to Market” by Tara Lawlor, illustrated by Rich Greco. It’s a modern farm-to-table parody. Let’s have a look!

This little piggy went to market in the city. This little piggy went to market in the city. I’m going to the market, okay? This little piggy stayed home; she always forgets about the market.

This little piggy made it all the way to the market, but when he saw the crowd, he just couldn’t even, so he left and got some pour-over coffee and an almond croissant. Oh, that sounds really nice right now!

This little piggy will probably end up throwing most of this away, but why? This little piggy wanted some Gruyère cheese but panicked because she wasn’t sure how to pronounce it, so she got cheddar instead. Has that ever happened to you?

This piggy forgot her tote bag that says “Saturday,” and she is really bummed about it. Ever gone to the market and forgotten your bag? Yeah, it’s no fun.

This little piggy went to market to canvas for his local council. I’m voting for the gadfly candidate! This little piggy is composting. This little piggy is thinking, “What exactly is composting?”

This little piggy got into a conversation with the fish guy, and now I guess he’s eating halibut for dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow and lunch after that. I wonder if I like halibut.

This little piggy had roast beef but is struggling to pick an artisanal mustard to go with it. This little piggy just asked if the roast beef was keto-friendly because this little piggy is insufferable.

This little piggy had none. This little piggy is buying flowers for himself because they are beautiful. Toxic masculinity is canceled!

This little piggy is hiding to avoid talking to someone she ghosted.

These little piggies went wee wee wee all the way home. Honestly, I don’t even miss bread.
