Hello, friends! Today, we’re going on an exciting adventure with trains. Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team and her friend Sophie are here to guide us through some fun stories and activities. Let’s get started!
In our first story, “Wild Ride” by Cynthia Platt, we meet Reya, who received a wooden train set for her birthday. She couldn’t wait to set it up and soon had her train whistling around the track. Her friend Sandy came over, and together they created a thrilling new train route that wound through forests and over dangerous bridges. They imagined wild animals like wolves, horses, and warthogs along the way. Even when their train crashed into the water, they laughed and decided to start all over again. Do you like playing with trains too?
Caroline and Sophie taught us about words that start with the “wh” sound, like “whistled,” “when,” “why,” “what,” and “whinny.” We practiced finding these words in sentences and even spelled them out. It’s fun to learn new words and sounds!
Next, we read about “Monster Trains,” which are powerful trains that can pull heavy loads. Some trains are so long, they stretch for miles! We learned about freight trains that carry goods like coal and iron ore, and passenger trains that travel long distances. Did you know some trains, called bullet trains, can go super fast? In Japan, they’re known as Shinkansen. How cool is that?
To keep our bodies strong and healthy, Coach Kelli and her helpers, Gracen, Collin, and Ella, showed us some fun exercises. We did up-downs, soft jumps, lunges, and planks. Remember, exercising boosts brain power and keeps us feeling great. Don’t forget to drink water to stay hydrated!
Now it’s your turn! You can create your own train stories, play with train sets, or even draw train tracks. If you don’t have a train, you can pretend to be one. Let’s keep the train adventure going!
Thank you for joining us for Circle Time. We hope you had as much fun as we did. See you next time for more exciting stories and activities. Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team!
Train Track Adventure: Create your own train track using household items like books, blocks, or even string. Imagine your train is going on a journey. What places does it visit? Are there any obstacles it must overcome? Draw a map of your train’s route and share your story with a friend or family member.
Whistle Words Hunt: Go on a “wh” word scavenger hunt around your home or classroom. Look for objects or pictures that start with the “wh” sound, like “whale” or “wheel.” Write down the words you find and practice saying them out loud. Can you think of a sentence using each word?
Train Speed Experiment: Use a toy train or a small car to explore speed. Create a ramp using a piece of cardboard or a book. Let your train or car roll down the ramp and measure how far it goes. Try changing the height of the ramp to see how it affects the speed and distance. Discuss with a friend or family member why you think the changes happen.
