In today’s lesson, we explored the important role of tractors on farms, learning how they assist farmers in preparing the soil, planting seeds, and harvesting crops. We discovered various tractor tools, such as plows and seed drills, that help make farming more efficient. Overall, tractors are essential machines that support the growth of food and the care of the land.
  1. What do tractors help farmers do on the farm?
  2. Can you name one tool that a tractor uses to plant seeds?
  3. What happens when it’s time to harvest the crops?

Welcome to Tractor Fun!

Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to have a fun time learning about tractors. Tractors are big, strong machines that help farmers do their work on the farm. Let’s find out how they help grow food and take care of the land!

Meet the Mighty Tractor

Tractors are super cool! They have big black tires with special patterns called treads. These treads help the tractor grip the ground so it doesn’t slip. This makes the tractor very good at working on the farm.

Getting the Ground Ready

Before farmers can plant seeds, they need to get the ground ready. First, they use a tool called a plow. The tractor pulls the plow across the field, and the plow’s sharp blades cut the soil into neat rows. This makes the soil nice and soft for planting.

Planting the Seeds

Next, it’s time to plant seeds! The tractor pulls a seed drill, which is like a big box that holds seeds. The seed drill makes little lines in the ground and drops seeds into them. Then, spikes cover the seeds with soil to keep them safe and warm.

Harvest Time!

When the crops are ready, it’s time to harvest! If the crop is hay, the tractor helps cut it and leaves it in rows to dry. Later, a machine called a baler picks up the hay and makes big bundles called bales. These bales can be square or round, and they are very heavy!

If the crop is grain, a big machine called a combine harvester helps. It cuts the grain and shakes it to get the seeds out. The tractor then helps carry the grain away in a trailer.

Tractor Tools

  • Chunky Treads: These help the tractor’s wheels grip the ground.
  • Seed Drill: This makes lines in the ground for seeds.
  • Hopper: This holds seeds and drops them into the ground.
  • Spikes: These cover the seeds with soil.
  • Blade: The plow’s sharp part that cuts the ground.
  • Bale Fork: This helps lift and move heavy bales of hay.

Time to Rest

After a busy day of helping the farmer, the tractor gets to rest. Both the farmer and the tractor work hard to take care of the farm!

I hope you enjoyed learning about tractors. They are amazing helpers on the farm! Thanks for joining us, and see you next time. Bye-bye!

  • What do you think would happen if tractors didn’t have those big, chunky treads on their tires? How might that change the way they work on the farm?
  • Can you think of a time when you needed help to do something big or heavy, like how farmers use tractors? What did you use to help you?
  • If you could design your own tractor, what special features would it have to make farm work easier or more fun? Why would you choose those features?
  1. Tractor Tread Exploration: Let’s explore how tractor treads work! Find a toy car or a small toy tractor. Take it outside and try rolling it on different surfaces like grass, sand, or a smooth floor. Which surface does it move best on? Why do you think the treads help tractors on the farm?

  2. Seed Planting Activity: You can be a farmer too! Get a small pot and some soil. Use your finger to make little lines in the soil, just like a seed drill. Plant some seeds in the lines and cover them with soil. Water them and watch them grow over time. What do you think the seeds need to grow big and strong?

  3. Harvest Time Role Play: Pretend you are a tractor on a farm! Use a toy or make a pretend tractor with a box. Imagine you are helping to harvest hay or grain. How would you carry the hay bales or grain? What sounds would your tractor make? Share your tractor story with a friend or family member.

Hi kids! Welcome to Storytime Family. Today, we’re going to be reading “Tremendous Tractors” by Tony Mitten and Ant Parker. Let’s begin!

Tremendous tractors, tremendous chugging tractors! So sturdy and so strong, connecting up to farm machines and pulling them along. Their big black tires have solid treads which help them not to slip. These chunky treads can grip the ground, allowing the tractor to work effectively on farmland.

To grow their crops, farmers start by sowing seeds, but first, they need to break the ground up. A plow is what they need! A tractor pulls the plow across the field, up and down, as the plow blades cut the soil into rich, brown furrows. The tractor then calls the harrow to break the soil some more. The metal discs crush up the clumps—that’s what the harrow is for!

It’s time to use the roller now. The long tubes roll around to flatten out the field, pushing stones beneath the ground. The seed drill has a hopper, or seed box, that you fill when it’s time for planting. The tractor pulls the drill, which makes a row of grooves for the seeds to drop into. The spikes then cover the seeds with soil.

If the crop is hay, you mow it when it’s grown. The grass is left in tidy rows to dry. Later on, a baler scoops the stalks up from the ground and shapes them into bales, which are bundles that can be square or round. A bale of hay is heavy, so it’s very hard to lift. A bale fork on a tractor makes it easier to shift.

If the crop is grain, when harvest time is here, a great big combine harvester can clear the whole crop. It cuts the stalks and threshes them to knock the grain out, then spreads the straw behind it as the grain spills from the spout. A tractor with a trailer shifts bales of straw or hay, takes food to hungry animals, or carries crops away.

The tractor and the farmer work hard to do their best, so when the day is over, they both deserve a rest.

Tractor bids: This has chunky treads to help the wheel grip bumpy or slippery ground.

Seed drill: This scratches small grooves in the ground for planting seeds.

Hopper: This holds the seeds and blows them out through a row of tubes.

Spikes: These move through the ground to cover the seeds after they drop.

Blade: A plow has sharp blades to cut into the ground and turn over the soil.

Bale fork: This is for lifting bales of hay or straw and moving them around.
