Today’s Story: “Trouble Gum”

Today, we have a fun story called “Trouble Gum” by Matthew Cordell. Can you guess what it’s about? That’s right, it’s about gum! Have you ever gotten into trouble with gum? It can be sticky and messy, just like what happens to a little pig named Ruben. Let’s find out what happens in the story!

The Rainy Day Adventure

One rainy day, Ruben was at home with his mom and Grammy. His mom was knitting a blanket, and Ruben was looking out the window, wishing the rain would stop. “When will the rain end, Mom?” he asked. “Not for a while, Ruben. Why don’t you play with your brother, Julius?”

Ruben and Julius played with cars and trucks. Ruben pretended to be an ambulance and then became Super Pig, his favorite hero! But he was a bit noisy, and Mom asked him to be quieter.

Gum Time!

Grammy had an idea to cheer Ruben up—gum! But Mom had some rules: “Don’t swallow your gum, don’t play with it, and don’t blow big sticky bubbles.” Ruben loved chewing gum and tried all sorts of funny ways to chew it. But oops, he accidentally swallowed it!

Ruben asked for another piece, and Grammy convinced Mom to give him one more chance. Ruben was excited and tried to stretch the gum like a big pig. But he had to be careful not to make a mess!

Oops, A Sticky Situation!

Ruben couldn’t resist playing with the gum, and it got stuck in Mom’s blanket! Oh no! But Ruben knew how to fix it. He carefully pulled and stretched the gum until it was all gone. “No more gum,” he said, but he was still a good pig.

Bubble Fun!

Ruben wanted to blow a bubble as big as a juice box. He tried and tried, and finally, he did it! He even blew a bubble as big as a birdhouse. But when he tried with three pieces of gum, it got really big, and he had to be careful not to get into more trouble!

The End of the Day

It was time for Grammy to go home, and Ruben helped fetch her purse. He had a fun day, even with all the gum trouble. Have you ever made a mess with gum or something else? I hope it turned out okay!

Remember to be kind to your parents and help them out. If you liked this story, you can find a copy to read at home. Don’t forget to share your thoughts and have a great day!

  • Have you ever played with something that got messy, like Ruben did with the gum? What happened, and how did you fix it?
  • Ruben had a fun day with his family even though it was rainy outside. What are some fun things you like to do indoors with your family when the weather isn’t nice?
  • Ruben tried to follow the rules about chewing gum but still got into a sticky situation. Can you think of a time when you tried to follow the rules but things didn’t go as planned? What did you learn from it?
  1. Gum Experiment: Let’s explore what makes gum so stretchy and sticky! With the help of an adult, try stretching a piece of gum and see how far it can go before it breaks. What happens if you pull it slowly versus quickly? Talk about why you think gum stretches and sticks. Remember to wash your hands after!

  2. Bubble Challenge: Just like Ruben, try blowing bubbles with gum. How big can you make your bubble? Ask a friend or family member to join you and see who can blow the biggest bubble. Talk about what you did to make your bubble bigger. Did you use more gum, or did you blow more gently?

  3. Sticky Situations: Think about other sticky things you might find at home, like tape or glue. With an adult, try sticking different objects together using these sticky things. What sticks well, and what doesn’t? Why do you think that is? Share your findings with your family.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music] Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you? I hope you’ve been keeping well and staying safe at home with your family. I hope you’ve had lots of time to read many books. Have you had any sun today? Did you manage to go outside and get some sunshine? Scooting, biking, maybe taking a walk with your family? Well, I hope you enjoyed yourself and that you’ve been spending lots of family time with your brother, your sister, and with your mom and dad. Remember to be kind to your family!

Well, today we have a book called “Trouble Gum” by Matthew Cordell. Can you guess what this book is about? That’s right, gum! I hope you haven’t gotten into trouble with gum before because you know it tends to make a mess. But that’s exactly what Ruben gets into—lots of trouble! Do you want to find out what the story is about? Then let’s get started!

“The Trouble at the Fig’s House” began one rainy day when Grammy was over for tea. Mom was knitting a blanket for Ruben. Ruben stared out the living room window, listening to the rain. “Oh, Mom,” Ruben said, “when’s the rain gonna end?” “Not for a while, Ruben. Why don’t you play with Julius?”

Julius was playing with his cars and trucks, and Ruben played along. “What’s this, Julius? I’m an ambulance!” “Ruben, can you be a little quieter?” Mom said. Ruben played Super Pig, and he always got to be Super Pig while Julius was his sidekick.

“Come on, squeal to the rescue!” Ruben shouted. “Bump!” Not a very graceful Super Pig, is he? “Ruben, settle down,” Mom yelled. Grammy had an idea. Gum! Ruben wasn’t often allowed to have it because it tended to make a mess.

“You know the rules,” Mom said. “Don’t swallow your gum, don’t play with your gum, and don’t blow big sticky bubbles with your gum. Be careful, Ruben.” Ruben loved chewing. “This is how the big pigs chew,” Julius said between smacks.

He chewed lying down, balancing on his head, and in super slow motion. But uh-oh, he accidentally swallowed his gum. “Can I have another piece?” Grammy opened her bag. “Good gravy,” Mom said. “You only had that gum for two minutes and you’ve already broken the rules.”

“I’m sorry! There will be no more gum for you today.” “Please, Ruben begged. I promise not to swallow another one.” “Give him one more chance, dear,” Grammy said. “You swallowed many pieces of gum when you were a piglet.” Mom reluctantly agreed.

“I wonder what’s in her bag,” Ruben thought. “I’ll just sit and cheer up, wrapped up in a warm blanket.” “This is how the big pigs stretch a piece of gum,” Julius said.

“Hope you’re not playing with your gum,” Mom warned. “If you do, the gum will go right in the trash.” “And let’s put my new blanket back on the chair, okay?” But Ruben couldn’t stop yet. “Just once more,” Julius whispered. “You hold the skin. Hang on, Julius!”

Uh-oh, not in Mom’s blanket! Ruben cried, “Oh, someone’s in trouble!” Fortunately, this wasn’t the first piece of gum Ruben had gotten stuck in Mom’s knitting. He knew just what to do: touch, pull, stretch, tear, rip, rub on my blanket, shake, shake, shake.

“No more gum,” Ruben mumbled. “However, you’re a good pig, Julius.” Smack, smack! “Never see me blow a bubble,” Ruben said. “This is how the big pigs blow a bubble.”

Ruben was still learning, but on his next try, he blew a bubble as big as a juice box. “Watch this, Julius! I’m a natural!” He blew a bubble as big as a birdhouse. “Hey, let’s see what we can do with three pieces,” said Ruben. “Look out for Mom!”

He blew a bubble as big as Great Uncle Stew. Can you believe that? But that is not going to end well! “Ruben, fetch Grammy’s purse. It’s time to say goodbye,” Mom said.

“That’s a lot of stuff in Grammy’s bag,” Ruben thought. Then crinkle, raccoon, crackle, smack, smack, snack, crinkle, raccoon, crackle.

[Music] “Oh my!” Ruben intended to make a mess indeed. Did you like this book? Have you made such a big mess with gum or anything else for that matter? Well, I hope it ended well.
