A Visit from Saint Nicholas: A Classic Christmas Tale

The Calm Before the Night

It was the night before Christmas, and everything in the house was quiet. Not even a tiny mouse was making a sound. The stockings were hung by the fireplace, waiting for Saint Nicholas to arrive. The children were sleeping peacefully, dreaming of sweet treats. Mama wore her cozy scarf, and I had my warm cap on as we settled down for a long winter’s nap.

A Sudden Commotion

Suddenly, there was a loud noise outside! I jumped out of bed to see what was happening. I ran to the window, opened it quickly, and looked out. The moonlight made the snow sparkle like it was daytime.

The Arrival of Saint Nicholas

To my surprise, I saw a tiny sleigh and eight little reindeer! A jolly old man was driving them, and I knew right away it was Saint Nick. He was so quick and lively! He called out to his reindeer by name:

“Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer and Vixen! On Comet! On Cupid! On Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

Just like leaves flying in the wind, the reindeer soared up to the rooftop, carrying a sleigh full of toys and Saint Nicholas too.

The Jolly Visitor

In a flash, I heard the sound of little hooves on the roof. As I turned around, down the chimney came Saint Nicholas! He was dressed in fur from head to toe, and his clothes were dusty from the chimney. He had a big bag of toys on his back, ready to share with everyone.

A Cheerful Appearance

His eyes twinkled, and he had a merry smile. His cheeks were rosy, and his nose was like a cherry. His beard was as white as snow, and he held a pipe in his mouth. His round belly shook when he laughed, just like a bowl full of jelly. He was a happy and chubby old elf, and I couldn’t help but smile when I saw him.

The Work of Saint Nicholas

With a wink and a nod, he let me know everything was okay. He didn’t say a word but got straight to work, filling all the stockings with gifts. Then, with a quick nod, he rose up the chimney.

The Departure

He jumped into his sleigh, whistled to his reindeer, and off they flew like fluffy thistle seeds in the wind. As he disappeared into the night, I heard him shout, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
