Meet the Bears

Once upon a time, there were two bears who lived together in a cozy den. One was a big brown bear, and the other was a little bear. They were good friends and shared everything, even their food! Little bear liked to nibble the edges, and big brown bear loved munching the middles. They were happy and got along very well.

A Hungry Day

One sunny day, little bear woke up feeling extra hungry, and big brown bear was very hungry too! Little bear said, “I’ll go get us some food!” Big brown bear thought that was a great idea and went back to sleep.

Little Bear’s Adventure

Little bear went shopping and bought lots of yummy treats like pies, pastries, and chocolates. But guess what? Little bear was so hungry that she ate everything before she got home!

Big Brown Bear’s Turn

Meanwhile, big brown bear’s tummy was rumbling loudly. He decided to go shopping too. He filled his big bag with sausages, strawberries, and even a small grape! But he was so hungry that he ate it all up before he got home!

Sharing and Caring

When big brown bear got back, little bear was waiting. They both felt a little guilty for eating all the food. But they shared what little they had left. Big brown bear saved half a cracker, and little bear saved three-quarters of a banana. They were happy to share!

Time for Bed

After their little snack, big brown bear yawned and said, “I think it’s time for bed.” Little bear agreed. They brushed their teeth and snuggled into their beds, dreaming of more adventures.

Sweet Dreams

The two bears slept all through the winter with full tummies, dreaming of springtime fun. They promised to collect food together next time!

  • What do you think it means to share with someone? Can you think of a time when you shared something with a friend or family member?
  • Why do you think the little bear and the big brown bear felt happy even though they didn’t have much food left? How do you feel when you share with others?
  • If you were going on an adventure like the little bear, what kinds of treats would you like to bring back to share with your friends or family?
  1. Bear Snack Sharing: At snack time, bring a variety of small snacks like crackers, fruit slices, or cheese cubes. Ask the children to pair up and share their snacks with each other, just like the two bears in the story. Encourage them to talk about how sharing makes them feel and why it’s important to share with friends.

  2. Bear Adventure Drawing: Provide paper and crayons for the children to draw their own adventure story. Ask them to imagine what the bears might do next time they go out to collect food together. Encourage them to think about what foods the bears might find and how they can share them. After drawing, let them share their stories with the class.

  3. Food Hunt Game: Organize a small treasure hunt in the classroom or playground. Hide pictures of different foods around the area. Give each child a list of foods to find, similar to the foods the bears collected. Once they find the pictures, gather the children and discuss which foods they found and how they could share them with a friend.

Hello and welcome to the Storytime Family! Today, we’re going to read “Two Hungry Bears” by Linda Cornwell and Jane Chapman.

Two hungry bears, big brown bear and little bear, share the den. They shared each other’s company and food. Little bear nibbled the edges while big brown bear munched the middles. In this way, they got along very well.

But one bright autumn day, little bear woke up feeling extra hungry, and big brown bear woke up feeling very hungry. “I’ll buy some food for both of us,” said little bear. “That’s very kind of you,” replied big brown bear sleepily, and he crept back to bed.

Little bear went out shopping and bought some things to take back to big brown bear, but she found she was so hungry that she ate everything right away: pies, pastries, peanuts, chocolates, cheeses, and cakes.

Meanwhile, big brown bear’s tummy was rumbling so loudly that the walls of the cave began to shake. “I’ve been thinking,” said big brown bear, “perhaps I should be out shopping for little bear.” So off he went with his big bag.

But when he filled it up, he was so hungry that he couldn’t wait. He began munching just the middles, then moved on to sausages, strawberries, sandwiches, tangerines, toffee, tarts, hamburgers, custard, spaghetti, soup, pizzas, salad, tomatoes, corn, and one small grape. Big brown bear ate tops, bottoms, sides, and middles—there was just no stopping him.

When he finished eating, he began to feel very full and guilty. He had left nothing for little bear. Big brown bear staggered back home where little bear was waiting patiently for him.

“Did you find any nice middles to munch?” little bear asked. Big brown bear could only nod his head.

“Did you come across any tasty edges to nibble?” little bear inquired. Big brown bear thought to himself that it certainly looked like he had.

Then they sat down together. “I saved you half of a cracker,” said big brown bear. “It still has four edges to nibble.”

“I saved you three quarters of a banana,” said little bear. “It’s all middle with no edges at all.”

After a while, big brown bear yawned. “I think I skipped supper,” he said. “I’m feeling a little too tired. An early night will do us both good.”

“Agreed,” said little bear. They spent a long time brushing their teeth before big brown bear snuggled into his bed and little bear crept quietly into hers.

“Let’s collect the food together tomorrow,” yawned big brown bear. But tomorrow was a long time away because big brown bear and little bear slept with their tummies nicely full all through the winter until spring.
