Unplugged Activity: Building a Foundation

Have you ever seen a sand sculpture? They are amazing, but did you know that making them can be tricky? Sometimes, they fall apart, and that’s okay! When things don’t go as planned, it’s important to keep trying. If you stick with it, you’ll find that things get better and more fun. That’s what this activity is all about—keep going, and you’ll enjoy the journey!

Building a Strong Structure

In this lesson, we’re going to try something challenging and exciting. Your task is to build a structure that is as tall as a cup and strong enough to hold a book. Sounds fun, right? But remember, it might not work perfectly the first time, and that’s okay!

Don’t Worry About Mistakes

Sometimes, our creations might not turn out the way we want. It’s normal to feel a little upset, but don’t let that stop you. If you feel stuck, take a deep breath and try again. The key is to keep trying and not give up. If you keep giving it your best shot, you’ll eventually succeed!

Keep Going and Learn

Success comes from not giving up, even when things get tough. When you’re trying to make something new, you might face some bumps along the way. But that’s okay! The secret is to keep moving forward and learn from what didn’t work. Remember, when you feel frustrated, it often means you’re close to something amazing. So, don’t stop before you reach it!

Enjoy building your foundation, and have fun learning from each step you take!

  • Have you ever tried to build something, like a sandcastle or a tower with blocks? What happened, and how did you feel when it didn’t work out the way you wanted?
  • Why do you think it’s important to keep trying, even when things are difficult? Can you think of a time when you kept trying and finally succeeded?
  • What are some things you can do to feel better when you’re upset about something not working? How can you help a friend who feels frustrated?
  • Observation Walk: Take a walk around your home or school and look for different structures. Can you find something tall like a tree or a building? What makes them stand strong? Draw a picture of one structure you find and label the parts that help it stay upright. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and explain why you think it is strong.

  • Build and Test: Using materials like blocks, paper cups, or cardboard, try building your own structure. How tall can you make it? Can it hold a small book? If it falls, think about what you can change to make it stronger. Try different designs and materials. Once you succeed, explain what changes you made to improve your structure.

  • Story Time: Imagine you are a sand sculptor trying to build a giant sandcastle. Write a short story about your adventure. What challenges do you face? How do you feel when your castle falls? What do you do to make it better? Share your story with your class and discuss how persistence helped you in your imaginary journey.

**Unplugged Activity | Building a Foundation**

In sand sculpture, it’s important to understand that failure is part of the process. You have to expect it and plan for it. However, if you persist, things will only get better and more exciting. That’s the essence of the activity—just keep going, and you’ll enjoy it.

This lesson is called “Building a Foundation.” In this lesson, we’ll tackle a challenging task. You’ll need to figure out how to create a structure that is at least as tall as one of these cups, and it must be strong enough to hold the weight of a book.

There may be times when our creations don’t work out. It’s okay to feel frustrated, but remember, we can recover and come up with new ideas. If you find yourself struggling, don’t give up! Persistence is key. If we keep trying and give it our best effort repeatedly, we’ll eventually succeed.

Success comes from hanging in there, even when you feel like giving up. If you’re aiming to create something new and different, expect to encounter failures along the way. The secret to persistence is to keep moving forward and learn from those failures instead of quitting out of frustration. Remember, frustration often means that something wonderful is just around the corner, so don’t give up before you reach it!
