In the “Happy Maps” lesson, students assist Flurb, a furry character, in navigating a map to reach her favorite fruit, apples, by drawing arrows that indicate the correct directions. This activity encourages children to think critically about mapping and programming by creating a visual path for Flurb to follow. Through this engaging exercise, students learn the basics of directional movement and planning.
  1. What direction should Flurb go to find her apple?
  2. How can we use arrows to help Flurb on her map?
  3. Why is it fun to make a path for Flurb to follow?

Unplugged Activity: Happy Maps

Welcome to the Happy Maps adventure! Today, we are going to help our cute little friend, Flurb, find her way to some yummy fruit.

Helping Flurb Find the Fruit

Flurb is a furry friend who loves apples. To help her get to the apple, we need to show her the right way to go. We can do this by using arrows to point her in the right direction.

Which Way Should Flurb Go?

Imagine Flurb is standing on a map. To help her reach the apple, we need to decide which way she should move. If she needs to go up, we draw a line going up. If she needs to go down, we draw a line going down. It’s like giving Flurb a little map to follow!

Creating a Path with Arrows

Now, let’s make a path for Flurb using arrows. You can glue arrows next to the map to show her where to go. This is like making a plan or a “program” for Flurb, but with paper and arrows!

Let’s Practice!

Try making a path for Flurb to follow. First, decide which direction she needs to go to reach the fruit. Then, use arrows to show her the way. It’s fun and easy!

And that’s it! You’ve helped Flurb find her fruit using Happy Maps. Great job!

  • What other things do you think Flurb might like to find on a map besides apples? Why do you think she would like those things?
  • Can you think of a time when you had to find your way somewhere? How did you know which way to go?
  • If you could create a map for a friend, where would you want them to go, and what fun things would you include on the map?
  1. Map Your Classroom: Create a simple map of your classroom using paper and crayons. Draw different objects or areas like the teacher’s desk, the reading corner, and the door. Then, use small paper arrows to create a path for Flurb to follow from one point to another. Discuss with your classmates why you chose that path and if there are other ways Flurb could reach the same destination.

  2. Outdoor Adventure: Go on a mini-adventure outside! Choose a starting point and a destination, like a tree or a playground slide. Use sticks or chalk to draw arrows on the ground, guiding Flurb (or a toy) along the path. As you walk the path, talk about what you see and if there are any obstacles Flurb might need to avoid.

  3. Story Time with Flurb: Create a short story about Flurb’s journey to find the fruit. Draw pictures to illustrate each part of the story, showing Flurb’s path with arrows. Share your story with a friend or family member and ask them if they can think of a different path Flurb could take. This will help you understand that there can be many solutions to a problem!

**Unplugged Activity | Happy Maps**

This lesson is called Happy Maps. Today, we’re going to help our furry little friend, Flurb, get to her fruit.

To guide Flurb to the fruit, you’ll need to determine the direction she should go and direct her with arrows. For Flurb to reach the apple, what direction does she need to go? You would draw a line to indicate that she needs to go up. To indicate the direction, circle it.

Create your algorithm by gluing arrows next to the map you are trying to solve. The second one is similar, but this time, it’s going down. It’s like programming with paper. And that’s it!
