In today’s Storytime lesson, we explored the delightful story “Up on Bob” by Mary Sullivan, which follows Bob as he struggles to balance his desire for sleep with the responsibilities of hard work. The narrative highlights the importance of perseverance and the joy of finding a solution, as Bob eventually finds peace when someone else takes on the work. The lesson encourages children to enjoy reading and to appreciate both hard work and relaxation.
  1. What does Bob want to do all day?
  2. Why is it important for Bob to work hard?
  3. How do you feel when you take a nap like Bob?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! How are you today? It’s a sunny and windy day, just like spring! I hope you had fun playing outside at the park and had a great day at school.

Today’s Story: “Up on Bob”

Today, we’re going to read a story called “Up on Bob.” It has words and pictures by Mary Sullivan. Let’s see what Bob is up to!

Meet Bob!

This is Bob. Bob is up on the bed. Bob has some work to do. It’s not easy, but Bob knows that working hard is important. But guess what? Bob wants to sleep all day!

Uh-oh! What’s Happening?

Oh no! Bob can’t sleep because someone is watching him. Bob tries to pretend he’s sleeping. Maybe the someone will go away. Is the someone leaving? Is the someone gone?

Someone Else Has Work!

Now, up on Bob, someone else has work to do. This someone doesn’t mind working hard. They know that hard work is good too. Hooray! Now everything is perfect, and Bob can sleep all day.

Time for a Nap!

Doesn’t that look cozy? I think I would like to take a nap too. How about you?

  • What do you think Bob was feeling when he couldn’t sleep because someone was watching him? Have you ever felt like that before?
  • Bob had some work to do before he could take a nap. What are some things you do before you go to sleep? Do you have a bedtime routine?
  • In the story, Bob and someone else both work hard. Can you think of a time when you worked hard on something? How did it make you feel?
  1. Bob’s Cozy Bed Craft: Let’s make a cozy bed for Bob using craft materials! Gather some colored paper, cotton balls, glue, and crayons. Create a small bed by folding the paper and use cotton balls for pillows. Decorate it with crayons. Imagine Bob is sleeping there. What other things can you add to make Bob’s bed even cozier?

  2. Hard Work Observation: Just like Bob and his friend, let’s find examples of hard work around us. Look around your home or school and find someone doing a task. It could be a teacher, a parent, or even a friend. What are they doing? How does their hard work help others? Draw a picture of them working hard and share it with the class.

  3. Storytime Role Play: Let’s pretend to be Bob and his friend! Pair up with a classmate. One of you can be Bob, trying to sleep, and the other can be the friend working hard. Act out the story and think about how Bob feels when he can’t sleep and how he feels when he finally can. How does the friend feel about working hard?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the YouTube transcript:

Today, we have “Up on Bob,” with words and pictures by Mary Sullivan. Let’s get started!

This is Bob, up on the bed. Bob has work to do. The work is hard, but Bob thinks hard work pays off. Not everything is perfect, though. Now Bob can sleep all day.

Uh-oh! Suddenly, everything is not perfect. Someone is watching Bob. Bob cannot sleep if someone is watching. Lay still, Bob. Pretend you are sleeping; maybe someone will go away. Is someone leaving? Is someone gone?

Pout!

Up on Bob, someone has work to do. The work is hard, but someone does not mind. Someone likes hard work. Hard work pays off. There! Now everything is perfect. Now Bob can sleep all day.

That looks pretty cozy, if you ask me! I would like to take a nap myself. How about you?
