In today’s “Circle Time” session with Caroline and Sophie, young learners explored the book “Harvest Time,” which follows Sandy and Peck on their adventure at a farm, where they discover various vegetables and fruits. The session included fun word activities focusing on sounds like “ar” and “or,” and Caroline introduced a basket of real fruits and vegetables, explaining their journey from farms to grocery stores. Children were encouraged to explore their kitchens and try new produce, fostering a connection to where their food comes from.
  1. What did Sandy and Peck see when they went to the farm?
  2. Can you name some fruits and vegetables that grow on farms?
  3. What fun activity did Caroline suggest we do in our kitchen?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hello, young learners! Today, we’re joining Caroline and her friend Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids team for a fun “Circle Time” session. It’s a special time where we can connect with friends, even from our own homes.

Reading “Harvest Time”

Today, Caroline and Sophie are reading a book called “Harvest Time.” It’s about Sandy and Peck’s adventure on a farm. They start their day early, excited to visit the farm. When they arrive, they see a big red barn and a farmhouse with a shady porch. Sandy and Peck decide to explore the cornfield first.

Discovering the Farm

On the farm, Sandy and Peck see a scarecrow. Do you know what a scarecrow is? It’s something that looks like a farmer and is used to scare birds away from eating crops. Sandy and Peck also help harvest vegetables like turnips, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplants, and garlic. Did you know some vegetables, like carrots and potatoes, grow underground?

Picking Fruits and Heading Home

As the day ends, Sandy and Peck pick cherries for dessert. Have you ever picked fruit from a tree? Some fruits grow on trees, like apples and bananas, while others, like berries, grow on bushes. Sandy and Peck leave the farm with a basket full of fruits and vegetables, excited to eat them for dinner.

Fun Word Activities

Caroline and Sophie play a word game with us. They explore words with the “ar” sound, like “farm” and “barn,” and the “or” sound, like “corn.” They also help us spell words and make sentences using these sounds.

A Basket of Surprises

Caroline has a surprise—a basket full of fruits and vegetables from the grocery store! She explains how these items come from farms to stores, so we can buy them. Caroline shows us different fruits and veggies, like orange peppers, purple cabbage, tomatoes, and even rainbow chard, which changes color when cooked!

Explore Your Kitchen

Caroline suggests a fun activity: explore your kitchen with your parents to see what fruits and vegetables you have. Imagine the farm where they were grown and maybe draw it. Try a new fruit or vegetable for your next meal!

Thank you for joining Caroline and Sophie for “Circle Time.” We hope you had fun and learned something new. See you next time!

  • What do you think it would be like to visit a farm like Sandy and Peck? What animals or plants would you be most excited to see?
  • Have you ever helped in a garden or picked fruits and vegetables? What was your favorite part of the experience?
  • Can you think of any fruits or vegetables you have at home that might have come from a farm? How do you think they got from the farm to your kitchen?
  1. Farm to Table Adventure: With the help of an adult, visit a local farmers’ market or grocery store. Look for fruits and vegetables mentioned in the story, like tomatoes, carrots, or cherries. Talk about how these items might have traveled from a farm to the store. Draw a picture of your favorite fruit or vegetable and imagine what it would look like growing on a farm.

  2. Scarecrow Craft: Create your own mini scarecrow using materials like sticks, old clothes, and straw or paper. Discuss why scarecrows are important on farms and how they help protect crops. Place your scarecrow in a garden or a plant pot at home and observe if it helps keep birds away.

  3. Sound Hunt: Go on a word hunt around your home to find objects that have the “ar” sound, like “car” or “jar,” and the “or” sound, like “door” or “floor.” Write down the words you find and try to use them in sentences. Share your sentences with a family member or friend.
