In this lesson, kids learn about various geometric shapes, including spheres, cubes, cylinders, prisms, pyramids, and cones, with relatable examples for each. The lesson encourages recognition and exploration of these shapes in everyday objects, fostering curiosity and engagement with geometry. By the end, students are prompted to think of additional examples of cubes and other shapes they encounter in their environment.
  1. What is a sphere, and can you name something that looks like a sphere?
  2. How many sides does a cube have, and can you think of an example of a cube?
  3. What shape does a cone have at the top, and what are some things that look like a cone?

Volume Geometric Shapes for Kids

Hey there! Today, we’re going to have some fun learning about different shapes. These shapes are called geometric shapes. Let’s see how many you can recognize!

Sphere

First up, we have a sphere! A sphere is round and looks like a ball. Imagine a tennis ball or a bowling ball. Those are spheres!

Cube

Next, we have a cube. A cube has six square sides that are all the same size. Think about a dice or a box. Those are cubes!

Cylinder

Now, let’s look at a cylinder. A cylinder has two flat, round ends that are the same size. It’s like a can of soda or a candle. Those are cylinders!

Prism

Here comes a prism! A prism has two ends that are the same shape. There are many kinds of prisms. A milk carton is a prism with square ends. Some prisms have triangle ends, like a skating rink!

Pyramid

Wow, look at this! It’s a pyramid! A pyramid has a base that is a shape with many sides, and all the other sides are triangles. They meet at the top point, called the apex. Think of the pyramids in Egypt or a teepee!

Cone

Finally, we have a cone. A cone has a round base and a pointy top. It looks like a birthday hat or an ice cream cone. Yum!

Let’s Recap!

Great job! Let’s remember all the shapes we learned today: sphere, cube, cylinder, prism, pyramid, and cone. Now you know all about these cool geometric shapes!

Can you think of more things that look like a cube? Keep exploring and learning about shapes around you!

  • Can you find any objects in your home or classroom that look like a sphere, cube, or cylinder? What are they, and how do they help you in your daily life?
  • Imagine you are building a castle using different shapes. Which geometric shapes would you use for the towers, walls, and roof? Why do you think those shapes would work best?
  • Have you ever seen a pyramid or a cone in nature or in pictures? Where did you see them, and what did they look like? How do you think these shapes are used in real life?
  1. Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around your home or classroom! Look for objects that match the geometric shapes we learned about: sphere, cube, cylinder, prism, pyramid, and cone. Make a list or draw pictures of the objects you find. Can you find at least one object for each shape?

  2. Build Your Own Shapes: Use playdough or clay to create the different geometric shapes. Try making a sphere, cube, cylinder, prism, pyramid, and cone. Once you’ve made them, compare the shapes. How are they similar? How are they different? Which one was the easiest to make?

  3. Shape Story Time: Imagine that each shape is a character in a story. What kind of adventures would they have? Write a short story or draw a comic strip about their day. For example, maybe the sphere rolls away on an adventure, or the pyramid helps build a sandcastle. Share your story with a friend or family member!

[Music] Today we’re going to learn about geometric shapes. Do you know how many types there are? Here they come! Take a guess. What is this? Yes, it’s a sphere! Spheres look like this tennis ball or like this bowling ball.

And this is a cube. Cubes have six identical square sides. [Music] Dice are cubes, and this box is also a cube. [Music]

This shape is a cylinder. Cylinders have two identical flat circular bases. A cylinder is like this can or like this candle.

This is a prism. Both faces of the prism are identical. There are many types of prisms. This milk carton is a prism, as you can see both of its faces are identical squares. But in this prism, its bases are triangles. It looks like a skating rink!

Wow, so fast! This one is super easy; I’m sure you’ve seen it before. It’s a pyramid! Its base is a polygon, and its sides are triangles. All sides meet at a central point, the apex, just like the pyramids in ancient Egypt or like this Indian-style teepee.

Finally, I’ll show you a cone. As you can see, the cone has a circular base and a vertex. The cone looks like this birthday hat [Music] or like this ice cream cone.

Oops! Well done! Let’s recap all the geometric shapes: sphere, cube, [Music] cylinder, prism, [Music] pyramid, cone.

Now you know everything about geometric shapes! Way to go! [Music] Leave a comment below about more shapes that look like a cube. If you want to keep learning, click on the seal and subscribe to our YouTube channel. To watch more videos, click on the video frames. [Music]
