Waffles and Mochi’s Adventure

Once upon a time, in a land where ice cream never melts, there lived two best friends named Waffles and Mochi. They dreamed of becoming chefs, but all they had to cook with was ice! Ice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Brrr! But they never gave up on their dream.

A New Adventure Begins

One day, something exciting happened! A truck got stuck in the snow outside their window. Waffles and Mochi wondered if it had real, fresh food. They decided to be brave and follow the truck to learn how to cook. Off they went on a tasty adventure!

Welcome to the Supermarket

Waffles and Mochi arrived at a supermarket filled with fresh food. They met a talking shelf named Shelfie and a friendly lady named Mrs. Obama. Waffles and Mochi wanted to work there, but they had never had a job before. Mrs. Obama decided to give them a chance!

Learning About Tomatoes

Mrs. Obama gave Waffles and Mochi a basket of tomatoes and asked them to put them where they belong. But first, they needed to learn more about tomatoes. They hopped into a magical shopping cart called MagiCart 3000, which took them on a journey to learn about tomatoes.

Meeting Chef Samin

In Oakland, California, they met Chef Samin Nosrat. She taught them that tomatoes are fruits because they have seeds inside. Waffles and Mochi tasted fresh cherry tomatoes for the first time. Yum! They learned that there are many kinds of tomatoes and that people cook them in different ways all over the world.

Cooking with Tomatoes

Chef Samin showed them how to make pasta with tomato candy. Waffles grated cheese, and Mochi helped with the tomatoes. They learned that cooking together can be fun and delicious!

Discovering Pizza

Next, Waffles and Mochi visited a pizza restaurant called Mozzeria. They learned that the staff used sign language to communicate because they were Deaf. They tried a yummy Margherita pizza with lots of tomato sauce. It was so tasty!

Is a Tomato a Fruit or a Vegetable?

Waffles and Mochi were confused. They learned that tomatoes are fruits because they have seeds, but chefs often use them like vegetables in salads and savory dishes. They visited Chef José Andrés in Washington, D.C., who explained that tomatoes can be both fruits and vegetables. Wow!

The End of a Tasty Adventure

Waffles and Mochi learned so much about tomatoes and had a fun adventure. They discovered that cooking and eating together can bring people closer. Now, they know where tomatoes belong and are ready for more cooking adventures!

  1. Tomato Seed Exploration: Gather some fresh tomatoes and help the children cut them open to find the seeds inside. Provide small pots, soil, and a few tomato seeds for each child. Encourage them to plant the seeds and water them regularly. Ask them to observe the growth process over time and discuss what they notice about how plants grow from seeds.

  2. Fruit or Vegetable Sorting Game: Create a simple sorting game using pictures or real examples of fruits and vegetables. Ask the children to sort them into two groups: fruits and vegetables. Discuss why tomatoes are considered fruits and how they are used like vegetables in cooking. Encourage the children to think of other foods that might be used in different ways.

  3. Cooking Together: Organize a simple cooking activity where children can make a basic tomato salad. Provide ingredients like cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese. Let the children wash and prepare the ingredients with supervision. Discuss how cooking together can be fun and how different ingredients can be combined to make tasty dishes.

[whimsical music plays] [woman] Let’s start at the beginning. Once upon a time, in a freezing world… Huh. This isn’t right. – [record scratching] – Can we start over? That’s better. And her little buddy right there? Well, that’s Mochi. [Mochi] Hello. Two best friends with one big dream, to become chefs. But let’s just say their cooking was a little on the… – Whoops! – [Mochi meeps] …cold side. Ice for breakfast. Aww. Ice for lunch. [Mochi meeping] Ice for dinner. But those two, they kept at it. Know what this could use? – [meeps] – Some shaved ice. [meeps] Bon appétit. – Bon appétit! – Bon appétit. [woman] Until one day, something appeared outside their window. – Ah! Our store’s truck had gotten stuck in the snow. Do you think that truck is going somewhere with real, live, fresh food? [murmuring] We’ve gotta have courage, Mochi, or we’ll never learn how to cook. [murmurs happily] [Waffles] All this food is made of food. [Mochi gasping] [Mochi murmurs in awe] [splutters] [shelf laughs] Excuse me. – [murmurs] – Uh… uh… A talking shelf. A talking… uh… waffle? Well, my dad is a frozen waffle. – My mom is a yeti. – [meeps] Welcome to the supermarket. I’m Shelfie. This is my best friend Mochi, I’m Waffles. [Mochi meeps] Oh, no. I’m so sorry. It’s all right. We’ll get this cleaned up. Hey, Intercommy. Clean-up on aisle nine. Oh. All right. That’s me. Here we go. Oh. Wait. Intercommy, Shelfie… You must be Moppy. No! It’s just Steve. Hmm. Well, nice to meet ya, Steve. [chewing] It’s crunchy. [chuckling] This place is so cool. What do you all do here? Huh! That’s easy. We work here! Uh! Can we work here, too? [murmurs] You’ll have to ask our store owner. She’s the one to ask about working here. – Find her upstairs in the garden. – [gasps] – Upstairs in the garden. – [Mochi murmurs] [dramatic music swells] [gasps] Wow! Well, hi there. – Hi. – Who are you two? – I’m Waffles and this is Mochi. – [murmurs] Well, hello, Waffles and Mochi. – Hi. – I am Mrs. Obama. – What can I do for ya? – We wanna work in the supermarket. Have you worked in a supermarket before? – No. – Okay. Have you ever had a job before? – No. – No? – [Busy] Wait a minute. Do you even know what a job is? [inhales] – No. – Busy, just hold off a second. – Okay. – [Mrs. Obama] Excuse him. [Mrs. Obama] Um… Why don’t we give you a chance? – We’d love that. – Let’s start with something simple. – Very. – How about that? – Yeah, that sounds great. – Let’s do it. – Okay. – Okay. [meeps] All right. You see these? What a beautiful basket of clown noses. No, these aren’t clown noses. These are tomatoes. Wait, whose toes? – [murmurs] – I picked them fresh from the garden. Wow. All you have to do is go downstairs and put them where they belong. No way they’ll be able to do this. – Can you do that? – No problemo, Mrs. Obama. – Excellent. Well, get to it. – Yeah. [Mochi murmurs] – We got this, Mochi. – [coos] – [grunts] Oh, man. – [Mochi meeps] – [grunts] – [Mochi meeps] Jeez, I wish we had something that could move this, like a… like a skateboard or a roller skate or a… – [Mochi] Wow! – [gasps] …that! Yeah. [awe-inspiring music plays] – [gasps] – [Busy] Oh, dear. Looks like they’re gonna take the MagiCart. – [gears whir] – [Mochi murmurs] Um, hi, magical super shopping cart of our dreams. Hi. Hello? We need help. Where does this tomato belong? [beeping] Welcome to MagiCart 3000. I see you need help finding out where tomatoes belong. Please put on your safety gear and seat belts. What? We need to do all that? Aren’t we just going downstairs? Well, eventually. I think we need to gear up. [meeps excitedly] Three, two, yum! Blast off! [uplifting music plays] [Waffles] Listen to your vegetables! And eat your parents! [Waffles chuckles] – Whoa, buddy. We’re flying. – [Mochi laughs] Where are you taking us? [MagiCart] Our first stop is Oakland, California, where you’ll meet Chef Samin Nosrat from the TV show Salt Fat Acid Heat. Wow, a chef? – I’m getting hungry. – [meeps] [kids] Oakland! [slow, whimsical music plays] [both gasping] Excuse me? – Hi. – Hi. You surprised me. – Sorry. – That’s okay. – I’m Waffles, and this is Mochi. – Oh, hi. I’m Samin. – Hey, Samin. – Are you the new neighbor? – No. We’re figuring out where we belong. – [murmurs] Yeah, good point, Mochi. What we need to figure out is where tomatoes belong. Have you had a tomato before? – No. – Would you like to taste one of these? One of my favorite kinds. Cherry tomatoes. – Cherry tomatoes? – Yeah. They’re little, like cherries. And they’re super sweet. – Here, there’s one for you. – Thank you. – For you, Mochi. – One for Mochi. – Okay. – [Mochi munches] Hmm. [Mochi murmurs happily] [choral music plays] – [Waffles gasps] – [Samin] What does that taste like? It’s juicy, and it bursts in my mouth. And it’s fresh. And it’s not frozen. Is this the first time you had a fresh tomato? – Yes. – Is it blowing your mind? It really is. I don’t know how to process it. [Mochi murmurs] There are actually 10,000 varieties of tomatoes around the world. So, people all over the world cook them in all different ways. – Wow. – You can cook tomatoes? Yeah. Do you wanna see the other tomatoes I picked? Oh, yes. Let’s do it. And you know who else is gonna come join us? – Who? – My friend Mia. [gasps] Hi, Mia. I’m Waffles, and this is Mochi. – Come on, Mia. Let’s go. – Let’s go. Do you know what a fruit is? Do I know what a fruit is? Of course I do. It’s a thingamajig that you put on your shelf and admire. [meeps] – You guys don’t know? – No. – I know. – What is it? It’s something that’s… that you can eat. Yeah, but can’t you eat cheese pizza, too? – Yeah. – Is that a fruit? – No. – No. It’s something that, when you cut it, the seeds are inside. – [Waffles] Ohh. – Oh, wow. You know this? Yes. It’s a green baseball. – I know what it is. – You— It’s an apple. – An apple. I’ll cut into it. – [Waffles] Oh, look, it’s got seeds. – [meeps] Let’s try a lemon. Does it have a seed? There it is. I’ll squirt some in your mouth. [Samin squeaks] Not all fruits are sweet. – [Waffles splutters] – [Mia laughs] Do you think there’s gonna be seeds on the inside of the tomatoes? Is the tomato a fruit? [playful music] [Mochi murmurs] [Samin] Do you see all those tiny seeds? It’s got seeds on the inside, Mochi. [Samin] Yeah. It means that a tomato’s a fruit. Ah! A tomato is a fruit. [meeps] Yeah! [Mochi] Yay! Are you guys ready to make some pasta with tomato candy? – Candy? – Everybody’s gonna have a job. Waffles, you’re in charge of the cheese. – I need you to grate it. – All right. Keep grating, and don’t stop until I tell you you’re done. Mia, we’re gonna put a bunch of tomatoes in this bowl. – [Mia] Watch out, Mochi. – Grating cheese is like a workout. – [Mia] Good job, Waffles. – Now, we’re gonna put some salt, some sugar… and some olive oil to help make it stick. That’s gonna make the tomatoes extra delicious. Running a cheese marathon. Now, we’re gonna put ’em in our oven. In the meantime, we can get everything else ready. [meeps hurriedly] Sorry, Mochi. I’m resting my arm. Mia, will you help pick the basil? All we have to do now is cook the pasta. [Waffles panting] [Mochi cheering] – [murmurs] – [pants] I think you did it all. – I did it? – Yes, you’re done! Amazing. – [objects clattering] – [Samin laughs] The pasta might be ready. Should we check? Mia, will you help by adding the basil into the bowl? Now, we can add our last ingredient. – Tomato. – Tomato candy. Look at those. [Samin] Wait till you taste ’em. We should put the whole tray in. – Should I just dump it in? – Dump it all! – [Waffles laughs] – Know what the finishing touch is? – [Mia] Cheese! – [Samin] Time to have a bite. [murmurs inquisitively] [Waffles] Mmm! – Don’t tomatoes taste like candy? – [Waffles] That is amazing. Oh! [munching] [purrs] I can’t believe we just met, and now we’re eating together. That’s what cooking and eating together can do. And now we know where tomatoes belong. [Mochi murmurs] I’m not a vegetable. I’m just misunderstood. I’ve never been a vegetable. And I wouldn’t be if I could. Put me in a certain aisle like there’s no more to discover. But you gotta read my whole book, not just look at the cover. People take one look at me and they think they know who I am. But I’m here to say once and for all so that everyone can understand. I’m a fruit. [vocalizing] I’m a fruit. Don’t define me so fast ’cause I’m here to say, at last, that, baby, I’m a fruit. Don’t box me in unless you’re putting me in a pizza box. It tastes so good. And no matter what kind of tomato you are, sliced or diced or in a jar, in ketchup or on a salad bar, or sun-dried in a primavera, tomato. I said, “A tomato” is a fruit. [vocalizing] I’m a fruit. Don’t define me so fast ’cause I’m here to say, at last, that, baby, I’m a fruit. That’s right. [Waffles] Mochi, I can’t believe we just ate food that was not frozen. [Mochi laughs] [Motown-style song playing] Whoa! [gasps] Look at those tomatoes, Mochi. Should we go inside? – [meeps excitedly] – Yeah, for research, obviously. [jazzy piano music plays] [meeps in awe] [woman sings in Italian] [singing in Italian fades away] – Hello. – Oh, hey. – I’m Katie. – Oh, hi, Katie. So, we saw a tomato outside. Is this a tomato restaurant? Can we order tomatoes? You can order a pizza. – Oh, pizza! We love frozen pizza. – [meeps] You have come to the best place to eat pizza. – What? – This is Mozzeria. – [Waffles] They make pizza here? – They make the best pizza. – Hey, what are you doing with your hands? – I’m talking with my hands because everyone who works here is Deaf, and they communicate by using their hands. What does it mean when you’re Deaf? What it means when you’re Deaf– It means you can’t hear. You don’t use your ears to hear. You use your eyes to hear. – Whoa! – [meeps] So, everyone here uses their hands to talk? That’s right. What’s your favorite pizza? [Katie translates] The Margherita is the most delicious because of the sauce, and the sauce is pretty much just tomato. I had no idea so much tomato went into pizza. – [murmurs] – [Waffles] Amazing. Do you know what I think is the coolest part about this restaurant? [Waffles] No. The staff uses their hands to communicate, but they’re also using their hands to make the delicious pizza. Also, the communication and the food are the same. It’s so cool. – This is Amanda. This is her place. – Hi. Amanda, how do you sign “pizza”? Pizza. – Pizza. – Pizza. – [murmurs] – That was perfect. – Thanks. – [Katie] Margherita. Here it is. – Pizza. Here you go, Waffles. [Waffles] Mmm! – [ethereal choir vocalizing] – [Katie laughs] It’s all melted together and warm. Mochi, get in on this. [meeps happily] – [Waffles] What did you think, bud? – [Mochi trilling] [laughing] Wow, so awesome that tomatoes are fruits. – Huh, Mochi? – Oh. As soon as we put tomatoes in the fruit section, we get to stay at the grocery store forever. Well, technically, a tomato is a fruit, but chefs use it like it’s a vegetable. What? Wait, wait, wait. You’re saying that a tomato is a vegetable? I’m so confused. Does it belong with the fruits? With vegetables? [Waffles] Come on. We gotta get out of here. Vegetable fruit. Oh. Excuse me. Can I take a bite for the road? Oh, yeah. [translating from Italian] A tomato is a fruit. [from Spanish] A vegetable. [from Japanese] Fruit, because tomatoes are sweet. [from Italian] Vegetable. It’s not sweet enough. [Spanish] Vegetable. – [Italian] Vegetable. – [Japanese] Vegetables. They don’t look like fruit. [Spanish] Vegetable. [Japanese] I think tomatoes are vegetables. [Italian] A tomato is a vegetable. A tomato is a fruit. Why? Because it has seeds inside. MagiCart, help. We thought tomato was a fruit, but then we heard it’s a vegetable. Well, what’s a vegetable? Well, a fruit is the part of a plant with seeds. Everything else, like the plant’s roots, stems, and leaves, are vegetables. You’re gonna tell us where tomatoes go in the store, right? No, but I know just the person to ask. [meeps inquisitively] Let’s swing by Washington, D.C., and ask Chef José Andrés. He wrote the book on vegetables. Literally. Sounds like the perfect person to ask. Would you expect anything less from me? Well, we don’t even know you yet, MagiCart. Cool it. ¡Vámonos! [kids] Washington, D.C. [upbeat Latin-flavored music plays] Ah! – [meeps] Ah! – Oh. Where are we? Oh, hey. Excuse me. – Hey. – Are you Chef José Andrés? Yes. Maybe you can help us. We’re confused. We need to put tomatoes away at the store. We learned it was a fruit, then someone told us it was a vegetable. So where does it belong, you know? Well, technically, technically, it’s a fruit. But then, in normal talk, we say it’s a vegetable. Why? Because we use it in salads. We use it in savory dishes. So, you’re saying that a tomato can be a fruit and a vegetable? Yes. And you will be right in both ways. Ooh! We’re gonna make a recipe that I learned from my wife. – Really? – It’s called gazpacho. Gazpacho is from the south of Spain. It’s always hot weather because it’s always a beautiful sun in the sky. Oh, so who wants hot soup in a hot-weather place? – It’s a cold soup. – [gasping] So, we need tomatoes. Tomatoes go into this blender. – Cucumber. – Cucumber. Here. And now, green pepper. Boom. – Garlic. – Garlic. Garlic in. [Mochi] Wow! This goes in here. And then, one of my favorite ingredients. – What do you think is it? – Is that
