Hey there! Today, we’re going to have fun with the number 5. We will learn how to make 5 using something called equations. An equation is like a math sentence that helps us understand numbers better. Instead of using words, we use numbers and special symbols. The plus symbol (+) means “and,” and the equal symbol (=) means “is the same as.”
Let’s imagine we have 5 toy cars. Some are blue, and some are yellow. Let’s find out different ways we can play with them to make 5 cars in total!
Did you know we can add more than two numbers to make 5? Let’s try with blue, yellow, and red cars!
Wow! There are so many fun ways to make the number 5. Keep exploring and playing with numbers to find even more ways. Have fun learning and playing with numbers!
Colorful Car Sorting: Gather a set of toy cars or any small objects in different colors. Ask the children to sort them into groups that add up to 5. For example, they can use 2 red cars and 3 blue cars. Encourage them to write down the equation they created, like 2 + 3 = 5. This activity helps them visualize and understand the concept of addition.
Number Hunt: Take the children on a number hunt around the classroom or home. Ask them to find objects or groups of objects that add up to 5. For instance, they might find 2 pencils and 3 erasers. Have them share their findings and write the corresponding equations, such as 2 + 3 = 5. This encourages them to apply the concept of making 5 in their environment.
Story Time with Numbers: Create a simple story involving characters or objects that add up to 5. For example, “Once upon a time, there were 2 cats and 3 dogs playing in the park. How many animals were there in total?” Encourage the children to draw the story and write the equation, like 2 + 3 = 5. This activity combines creativity with math, reinforcing their understanding through storytelling.
**Ways to Make 5: Using Equations**
by Teaching Without Frills
In this video series, we’re going to learn different ways to make the number 5. One way to show how to make 5 is by writing equations. An equation is like a math sentence. This sentence says “two and three is the same as five.” But instead of using words, equations use numbers and symbols. The plus symbol stands for the word “and,” and the equal symbol stands for the words “is the same as.” So “two and three is the same as five” can be written as 2 plus 3 equals 5.
Now I have a “making 5” problem for us to solve. We’ll show our answers using equations. I’m going to play with 5 toy cars. Some of my cars are blue, and some are yellow. What different combinations of cars could I play with?
Hmm… I could play with all yellow cars. 5 yellow cars and 0 blue cars is 5 cars in total. 5 plus 0 equals 5. Or maybe I’ll play with 1 blue car. 4 yellow cars and 1 blue car is also 5 cars in total! 4 plus 1 equals 5.
What if I play with two blue cars? 3 yellow cars and 2 blue cars is 5 cars total! 3 plus 2 equals 5. Or I can flip that around and do three blue cars. 2 yellow cars and 3 blue cars is 5 cars in total. 2 plus 3 equals 5.
How about 4 blue cars? 1 yellow car and 4 blue cars is also 5 cars in total. 1 plus 4 equals 5. Last one! Do you know what it is? Yep! All blue cars. 0 yellow cars and 5 blue cars is 5 cars in total. 0 plus 5 equals 5.
Did you know that you can even add more than 2 numbers at one time? Let me show you! What if I had blue cars, yellow cars, and red cars? I could still make 5, right? Let’s see! I could do this: 3 blue plus 1 yellow plus 1 red equals 5. Or how about this? 1 blue plus 2 yellow plus 2 red equals 5 in total.
