In the lesson “Welcome to Pawston!”, the story revolves around a fun-filled day where the characters prepare for a party in a tree, meet new friends, and embark on an adventurous journey through their town. The main character befriends a new neighbor, Scooch Pooch, and together they navigate obstacles to reach the party while also helping Gerald, the new Mail Dog, deliver mail. The lesson emphasizes themes of friendship, community, and the joy of helping others in a welcoming environment.
  1. What did Scooch and I do to help Gerald the Mail Dog?
  2. How did Scooch and I become friends so quickly?
  3. What fun things did we see on our way to the party?

Welcome to Pawston!

Hey there, dog friends! Today is a special day because there’s a party happening in a tree! Everyone is getting ready. Grandpaw needs to wake up, Cheddar Biscuit should brush her teeth, and Gilbert is making breakfast. Grandmaw is helping Grandpaw, and Yip is being cute. Paw is starting the car, and Spike is checking the weather. Mom is helping too, and I’m doing the rest!

Meet Scooch Pooch

In Pawston, I met a new neighbor named Scooch Pooch. He just moved here with his mom, and they don’t know anyone yet. Scooch likes chickens, and I like race cars and jet planes. We quickly became friends!

The Party Adventure

We were in a rush to get to the party in the tree. There will be big dogs, little dogs, and lots of fun things like a dog cannon! Scooch asked his mom if he could come, and she said yes!

I have a scooter with a sidecar, and Scooch hopped in. We zoomed through Pawston, passing the ball store and the doorbell store. We even saw my sister, Cheddar Biscuit, who is a clown!

Finding Our Way

There was a traffic jam because so many dogs were going to the party. We decided to take a shortcut through the Pawston Hedge Maze. I know the maze really well, so we made it through quickly.

We also took a boat and then a blimp to get closer to the party. Scooch was amazed by all the fun things we did along the way, like seeing circus dogs and the Barkapellas sing!

Finally at the Party

Even though we had some delays, we finally made it to the party. There were big dogs, little dogs, and even a dog cannon! Scooch was happy because he had a great day and made a new friend—me!

Helping Gerald the Mail Dog

Later, we met Gerald, the new Mail Dog in town. He was having trouble delivering mail because some dogs liked to chase him. Scooch and I decided to help him out.

We used Scooch’s tractor, which has a fun chicken horn, to deliver the mail. We even added rocket boosters to make it go faster!

Delivering Mail and Making Friends

We delivered mail to Lady Lydia, who loves hats, and to my dad’s Ding-Dong Doorbell Store. Gerald was so happy to have our help, and everyone in Pawston was friendly and welcoming.

At the end of the day, we delivered a special package to Gerald’s house on Mutt Mountain. It was a cake from the dogs who had been chasing him. They just wanted to welcome him to Pawston!

Welcome to Pawston, Gerald!

Gerald was thrilled to be part of our town and proud to be the Mail Dog. We were all happy to have him with us. Pawston is a place where everyone is friendly and helps each other out!

  • What do you think it would be like to have a party in a tree? Can you imagine what fun activities you might do there?
  • Have you ever helped someone new feel welcome, like Scooch and his mom in Pawston? What did you do to make them feel at home?
  • If you could go on an adventure like Scooch and his friend, what kind of transportation would you use and where would you go?
  1. Map Your Own Adventure: Create a simple map of your neighborhood or a place you know well, just like the Pawston Hedge Maze. Use crayons or markers to draw roads, houses, and landmarks. Then, plan a fun route to a pretend party. Share your map with a friend or family member and explain why you chose that route. What fun things might you see along the way?

  2. Friendship and Helping Hands: Think about a time when you helped someone or when someone helped you, just like Scooch and his friends helped Gerald the Mail Dog. Draw a picture of that moment and write a sentence about how it made you feel. Share your drawing with the class and talk about why helping others is important.

  3. Animal Sounds and Vehicles: In the story, Scooch’s tractor had a chicken horn. Imagine if other vehicles had animal sounds! Choose a vehicle and decide what animal sound it would make. Draw the vehicle and the animal, and practice making the sound. Share your creation with the class and see if they can guess the animal sound you chose for your vehicle.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript, removing any unnecessary sounds and focusing on the dialogue and key actions:

Hey, you dogs! Today is the day! Party in a tree!

Grandpaw, wake up! Cheddar Biscuit, brush your teeth. Gilbert, make breakfast. Bacon and eggs. Oh, hold the eggs. Grandmaw, wake Grandpaw up!

Yip, be cute. Paw, get the car started. Spike, check the weather. Mom, help Grandmaw wake Grandpaw up. And I’ll do the rest!

I just had the strangest dream. Tag was telling us about a party. It wasn’t a dream, it was real! Go, dog, go!

Welcome to Pawston!

Testing confetti blaster thingy. Confetti blaster thingy working well! Is it supposed to spray Grandpaw every time? No, I think confetti just likes him, Grandmaw. Anyway, see you at the party! Go, dog, go!

A dog I don’t know? Impossible! Hiya, new neighbor. Welcome to Pawston. My name’s Tag Barker, and I live next door. I like race cars, speed boats, and jet planes. Ooh, wait. Did you tell me your name? Scooch Pooch. I like chickens. Nice to meet you, Scooch Pooch.

My mom and I just moved to Pawston. We don’t know anybody here, but we do know a lot of nice chickens.

Sorry to interrupt, buddy. Is it too soon to say “buddy”? I don’t think so, buddy. But we’re in a rush because today’s the day of the big party in the tree!

Party in a tree! See? There’s gonna be big dogs, little dogs, and all the balls you can chase. And a dog cannon! You wanna go?

Mom? Can I go to the party in the tree with Tag?

Who’s Tag? I’m Tag! Hi, Tag. I’m Scooch’s mom. You two stay out of trouble, and I’ll meet you there.

I built this scooter myself and it has a sidecar. Ever ride a scooter on the farm? Nope. Just a tractor.

Does this go fast? Nah. Not really. This is way faster than a tractor!

See that really tall tree way in the distance? That’s where the party in the tree will be!

This is the Pawston Town Center. Hi, Tag. Hi, Spike! It’s where the action is. That’s the ball store.

That’s the doorbell store. Hey, Paw! That’s my sister, Cheddar Biscuit. She’s a clown.

Why’d we stop? Look. Traffic jam. ‘Cause there are so many dogs going to the party!

Hello. Do you like my hat? Um, sorry, Lady Lydia. I do not. And you? Um… It’s okay. You can be honest. Okay. Then, no. I do not like that hat.

That’s Lady Lydia. She has a lot of hats.

What do we do? You know, you could just wait. Maybe the traffic will clear up. But I wanna get Scooch to the party. It’s his first day in Pawston!

Welcome to Pawston! I’m Manhole Dog. Nice to meet you. I like chickens.

Sorry, fellas. But we’ve gotta go. Luckily, I know a shortcut.

The Pawston Hedge Maze. Hold on tight! A hedge maze? That’s the shortcut? It is to me. I know this maze like the back of my paw.

C’mon, Scooch. We can take this boat to the party. You’re gonna love this party, Scooch! There’s gonna be dancing dogs, jump-roping dogs, and cake-eating dogs. And a dog cannon!

That’s the second time you’ve mentioned the dog cannon. Yeah! Because it’s amazing!

Hey, Barkapellas. This is my new friend, Scooch Pooch.

Welcome to Pawston!

We’re on our way to the party in a tree. And every dog knows that to get to a tree, you need a boat.

A boat backup? Guess all the boat dogs are going to the party, too.

And now do you like my hat? We do not like that hat.

We’re still not moving. We need a new way to go, dog, go! And I just found one! Come on, Scooch. We’re taking the blimp.

Wow. It’s like a tractor in the sky. Let’s go!

We’re on our way to the party in a tree. And every dog knows that to get to a tree, you need a blimp.

Bumper to bumper blimps?

Folks! A lot of dogs are trying to get to this party. And we’ll get you there as soon as we can.

Your mom is the blimp pilot?

No time to sit, Scooch. Mom, could we get off here? I wanna get my new friend, Scooch, to this party as soon as possible.

Uh, sweetie, you might get there quicker if you wait for the blimp to get moving again.

Thought about it. We would like to get off here.

But, Tag. Where are we going? To the party in the tree, of course.

Uh-oh. We’re still so far away. And all the other dogs are there.

If we waited, we would have made it to the party. But now we’re gonna miss it.

I’m sorry, new neighbor pal.

Sorry? Tag, do you know what I did today? I rode on a scooter, I saw circus dogs, I went in a maze, and took a boat ride, and a blimp ride, and I saw the Barkapellas! Plus, I made a new friend. You.

Thanks for making me feel so welcome.

Aw. Give me a paw, buddy.

Hello, again! And now, do you like my hat?

Those pinwheels remind me of the windmill on my farm. Scooch! The pinwheels! That’s it!

Lady Lydia, can I borrow your hat? You may.

Try this on. Tag! How did you do that? Making things go, it’s kind of my thing.

Now, jump on, Scooch. And I even added a confetti blaster thingy.

Do you like my hat? Yes! We really do!

Hey, you dogs. Hey, you made it! This was definitely worth the wait!

Look, Mom, big dogs, little dogs, jump-roping dogs, manhole dogs. Oh, yeah, there’s that dog cannon.

That was awesome! I told you, buddy.

Wow, what a town!

I’d like you all to welcome my new friend, Scooch, and his mom. The Pooches.

Hi, Pooches!

Hit it, Barkapellas.

Welcome to Pawston!

They’re gonna like it here.

Scooch’s house, here I come. Scooch’s house, here I am. Scooch! Come on, buddy!

Hiya, Tag. Hey, pal. Hop in my sidecar and let’s go.

I was thinking, maybe we could take my wheels today.

Scooch has wheels? Whoa! Scooch has huge wheels.

Yep, it’s my tractor from the farm.

Why are the tires so big? Dirt roads, my friend, dirt roads.

Hop on.

Well, let’s see what this puppy can do!

Hold on to your helmet, Tag. Go, dog, go!

Um, Scooch, does the tractor go any faster? Nope, but it does have a chicken horn.

That’s delightful.

Ooh, dirt road up ahead! Let’s see what this puppy can do!

Excuse me, Mail Dog coming through.

I think that was the new Pawston Mail Dog.

Um, hello, I’m Tag and this is my pal, Scooch.

Hi, I’m Gerald and I’m hiding in a bush.

We see that. Why are you hiding?

Great question. Well… I’ve been trying to deliver this bag of mail ever since I got to town, but every time I try, I get chased by dogs!

Yeah, some dogs like to chase Mail Dogs. Never understood why.

Um, Gerald?

I have three more pieces of mail to deliver today, but I’ll never get to all the houses with those dogs chasing me.

Aw, poor dog. How can we help him?

I know. We can help him deliver the mail.

Oh, really? You’d do that for me?

Of course, this is Pawston. Helping other dogs is what we do.

Ooh! We can use my tractor. It has a chicken horn.

That’s delightful.

But is this tractor fast enough to outrun those dogs? No, but it will be.

Welcome to Pawston, Gerald. I think you’ll find we’re the friendliest town around.

Yes, everyone seems so nice.

Those chasing pups will never catch up to you with these rocket boosters.

Rocket boosters? That sounds fast.

Really, really fast.

Um, Tag, do you wanna drive?

I already am.

Now, let’s deliver some mail. Go, dog– Scooch, press that rocket button, please.

Go, dog, go!

Who’s our first mail customer, Gerald? I have a letter for Lady Lydia.

Oh, I know a shortcut.

You could have warned us!

Sorry, I will next time.

We’ve got company, furry company.

Let’s see ’em try to keep up with the tractor.

Scooch, rocket button.

We lost ’em. Great driving, Tag!

Thanks, Gerald.

Oh, hello! I’m Gerald, the Mail Dog. Here’s your mail, Lady Lydia.

Do you like my new hat?

Not quite.

Maybe another?

This one?

Not that one, either.

How ’bout this one?

We do not.

Oh, you must like this one.

No.

Do you like this one?

Yes!

Yes, I do like that hat.

We like that.

So do I! I like all my hats. Goodbye.

And that was wonderful mail delivery, Gerald. Welcome to Pawston.

Oh, that was a nice welcome.

See, Gerald? Pawston is a very welcoming place.

Scooch, wanna drive?

Um, that’s okay. Maybe later.

Alrighty. What’s the next stop, Gerald?

This one’s going to the Ding-Dong Doorbell Store.

That’s my dad’s store.

Whoa! That was a shortcut.

You’re supposed to warn us before the shortcut.

Oh, right. Sorry.

Tag, look!

They’re catching up.

Oh, no!

We still have rockets.

Button me, Scooch.

We made it.

But here come the dogs!

Don’t worry. I’ll keep ’em busy.

Hey, you dogs! Chase this!

I’m not a very good thrower!

Welcome to the Ding-Dong Doorbell Store.

Oh, hi, Tag.

Hi, Paw.

And you must be the new Mail Dog.

Yep. The name’s Gerald. And I have a delivery for Paw Barker.

Ooh, the new doorbell we ordered.

Let’s see how it rings.

Like a charm.

Welcome to Pawston, Gerald.

Now, did you know Pawston was discovered almost a hundred years ago by Chewlysses Droolius Barker…

Um, we’ve gotta go, Paw.

Okey-doke.

Gerald, I’d like you to have this, to welcome you to town.

A doorbell shaped like mail.

You folks are so friendly. Thank you.

Boy, those dogs are fast, but that bone will keep ’em busy.

Not busy enough.

Gerald, where’s the last piece of mail going?

Oh, it’s a biggie, and it’s going to the top of Mutt Mountain.

Okay, we’re gonna take a shortcut.

That was great.

When’s the shortcut?

Right after I tell you this joke. Why did the chicken cross the road?

Why?

It was a shortcut!

That’s hilarious!

Mutt Mountain, straight ahead.

Go, dog– Whoa! That’s steep.

Scooch, you think the tractor can make it?

My tractor can handle any dirt road.

Great. You wanna drive?

I already am.

It’s button time.

Oop, that’s the chicken horn.

I got it, Scooch.

Go, dog, go!

Whoo-hoo!

We’re almost at the top!

Okay, this package is for Gerald, the Mail Dog.

Wait, I’m Gerald, the Mail Dog.

And that’s my house.

And that’s a helicopter.

They finally caught me.

Oh, no!

We don’t wanna catch you.

Oh, you can talk?

We just wanna ask you a question.

Do you enjoy presents?

Uh, yes. Yes, I do, very much.

Whoo-hoo! Then, open the present!

A cake!

Yep, it’s from us.

We just wanted to welcome you to Pawston.

Aw, you dogs were right, I do love it here!

All day long, dogs have welcomed me and made me feel at home.

I am proud to be your Mail Dog!

Welcome, Gerald!

Happy to have you, Gerald.

That’s Kenny. He made the cake.
