In this lesson, we learned about blizzards, which are intense snowstorms characterized by strong winds, low visibility, and a duration of at least three hours. Blizzards form when warm and cold air masses collide, creating conditions that can lead to dangerous weather. While it’s important to stay safe indoors during a blizzard, once it passes, there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy in the snow.
  1. What are the three things that need to happen for a snowstorm to be called a blizzard?
  2. Why is it important to stay indoors during a blizzard?
  3. Can you think of some fun activities you can do in the snow after a blizzard is over?

What is a Blizzard?

Hey there! Do you love playing in the snow? We sure do! Sledding, building snow forts, and taking snowy walks are so much fun. But sometimes, it’s not safe to go out in the snow, especially during a blizzard.

How Blizzards Form

A blizzard is a special kind of snowstorm. It starts when two big areas of air meet: one cold and one warm. The warm air rises above the cold air, creating the perfect conditions for lots of wind and snow.

What Makes a Blizzard?

For a snowstorm to be called a blizzard, three things need to happen:

  1. Strong Winds: The wind must blow at least 55 kilometers an hour, which is as fast as a car driving down the street! This wind can blow around things like lawn furniture and garbage cans.
  2. Low Visibility: Visibility is how far you can see. In a blizzard, you might only see a couple of blocks away, or even less. Sometimes, you can’t see anything at all, which is called a “whiteout.”
  3. Duration: The snowstorm must last for at least three hours.

Blizzard Facts

Blizzards are usually very cold, but they don’t have to be a certain temperature to be called a blizzard. They also don’t need to have a lot of snow, but they often do. Some blizzards leave behind snow that’s taller than you!

Blizzards happen in places where warm and cold air meet often. In the winter, the middle of the United States and Canada get lots of blizzards because cold air from the North Pole meets warm air from near Mexico. Other places like the Northeastern US, parts of the UK, Romania, Iran, and China can also experience big blizzards.

Enjoying the Snow Safely

We just had a blizzard where we live, but now that it’s not snowing, it’s a great time to go outside and build a snowman. Remember, it’s important to stay safe during a blizzard by staying indoors. But once it’s over, you can have lots of fun in the snow!

  • Have you ever seen a lot of snow outside your window? What did it look like, and how did it make you feel?
  • Imagine you are in a blizzard. What fun things would you like to do once the blizzard is over and it’s safe to go outside?
  • Why do you think it’s important to stay indoors during a blizzard? Can you think of any other times when it’s important to stay safe inside?
  1. Blizzard in a Jar: Create your own mini blizzard! You’ll need a clear jar, some water, white glitter, and a few drops of blue food coloring. Fill the jar with water, add the glitter and food coloring, and then shake it up. Watch how the glitter swirls around like snow in a blizzard. Discuss with your friends or family how the swirling glitter is like the strong winds in a real blizzard.
  2. Windy Day Experiment: On a windy day, go outside with an adult and observe how the wind affects different objects. Take a small piece of paper, a leaf, and a lightweight toy. Which one gets blown the farthest? Talk about how strong winds in a blizzard can move things around, just like the wind did with your objects.
  3. Blizzard Story Time: Imagine you are in a blizzard. Write a short story or draw a picture about what you would do. Would you stay inside and read a book, or maybe make hot chocolate? Share your story or drawing with your class or family and talk about why it’s important to stay safe during a blizzard.
