Let’s imagine we’re walking around our community. We might see lots of interesting things and people. Let’s play a game where we find out what belongs in a community!
First, we see a playground, a police officer, and an octopus. Hmm, which ones belong in a community? Yes, you got it! A playground and a police officer belong in a community. Playgrounds are where we have fun, and police officers help keep us safe. An octopus lives in the sea, not in our community!
Next, we see a bear cave and a library. Which one do you think belongs in a community? That’s right, a library! Libraries are special places where we can read lots of books and learn new things. Bear caves are for bears, and they are usually found in the forest.
Now, let’s look at a house, a volcano, and a school bus. Which ones belong in a community? Great job! A house and a school bus belong in a community. People live in houses, and school buses take children to school. Volcanoes are big mountains that can be very hot and are not found in our community.

Use props like hats or badges to make it more fun. Talk about what each helper does and why they are important in your community. How do they help people every day?
Community Collage Creation: Collect old magazines or print pictures from the internet with the help of an adult. Cut out pictures of things that belong in a community, like houses, schools, and parks. Glue them onto a large piece of paper to create a community collage. Share your collage with your class or family and explain why each picture is important to a community.
