Hi there! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m so happy you’re joining us for Circle Time. Today, my friend Sophie and I are here to have some fun, read books, and do activities. We even have a special Show and Tell segment, which is my favorite part! If you want to see our next episode, don’t forget to subscribe.
Today, we have two special visitors: Teacher Naomi and her son, Noah. They’re here to talk about a big word: diversity. Have you heard of it before? Let’s find out what it means together!
Diversity means being different and having a lot of variety. Imagine a bowl of fruit with bananas, strawberries, apples, oranges, pears, and peaches. They all sound different, right? That’s diversity! It’s fun to have different things because if everything were the same, it would be boring.
When you’re at the playground or school, do people look the same? No, they don’t! People have different hair, clothes, and skin colors. That’s diversity, and it’s beautiful. Different doesn’t mean better or worse; it just means different.
Think about your friends. How are they different from you? Maybe they have different hair or eye colors, or they wear glasses. Even though we’re different, we can still be great friends and learn from each other. Diversity keeps things interesting!
We’ve read many stories about friends who are different. For example, Poppy and Daisy are different in height and color, but they’re both flowers and love spending time together. Comet and Asteroid look different but are both in space. Our friends Kodi, Sandy, Reya, Ollo, and Peck come from different parts of the world, but they’re all great friends.
Today, we read a story called “The Story Club.” Reya wanted to start a story club with her friends, but everyone had their own way of writing. Some needed music, others liked to write quietly, and some wrote loudly. In the end, everyone wrote their stories in their own way, and that was okay!
It’s time for Show and Tell! Our Circle Time friends sent in their drawings of Kodi and other characters. They all look different, with unique hairstyles and skin colors, but they all love to draw. If you’d like to send in your drawings or videos, we’d love to see them and share them on Circle Time!
Thank you for joining us on Circle Time. We love celebrating our differences and learning from friends around the world. Remember, even though we’re different, we’re also very similar because we all love to learn. Goodbye for now from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team. See you next time!
Fruit Bowl Diversity: Create your own “diversity fruit bowl” at home. Ask a grown-up to help you gather different fruits like apples, bananas, oranges, and grapes. Notice how each fruit is different in color, shape, and taste. Talk about how each fruit is special in its own way, just like people. Can you think of other things that are different but still belong together?
Friendship Collage: Make a collage with pictures of your friends or draw them if you like. Use different colors and materials to show how each friend is unique. Maybe one friend has curly hair, and another wears glasses. Share your collage with someone and explain what makes each friend special. How do these differences make your group of friends more interesting?
Story Time Exploration: Think about the story “The Story Club” where everyone wrote in their own way. Try writing or drawing a story in your own style. Do you like to write with music, or do you prefer it quiet? Share your story with a family member or friend and ask them how they like to create. How do different ways of creating make stories more exciting?
